Prosecutors have been given more time to prepare their case against a Brazilian woman accused of making a false allegation that she was raped in Dublin.

A court heard the directions of the DPP were not available yet and gardai were still preparing a “substantial file.”

Judge Anthony Halpin granted a one-month adjournment, but said the DPP’s directions should concern the “gravity or magnitude” of the offence rather than the size of the file.

Thais Regina de Oliveira (20), a student with an address at Cabra Park, Phibsboro is charged with making a false statement at Mountjoy Garda Station on August 28 last.

She allegedly told gardai she was dragged down a laneway by three men and sexually assaulted as she walked to work at Cabra Park on August 24.

The accused, wearing a black top, cardigan, jeans and boots, was on bail when she appeared in Dublin District Court today.

It was her third time in court since she was arrested earlier this month.

Det Gda Kevin Keys said the file was not yet completed and would take another two to three weeks. A lot of agencies were involved, he said.

“I would have thought directions were in relation to the magnitude or gravity of the offence,” Judge Halpin said.

He added that he did not see how this was affected by the length of the file.

Defence Solicitor Peter Keatings said Ms de Oliveira was now living at another address, details of which were handed in to court.

Her signing on requirement for bail was changed to Blackrock Garda Station.

The defendant was remanded on continuing bail to appear in court again on a date next month.

Previously, the court heard it was alleged Ms de Oliveira persisted with her rape claim for 12 days and identified a man she had met.

During her bail hearing, the court was told the accused allegedly wasted “considerable” garda resources in her claim and officers “came close” to making an arrest before she made admissions.

Bail was granted in her own cash bond of €1,000 cash.

During that hearing, Det Gda Chris Cahill said the alleged report led to a major investigation and only after 12 days, and “significant cost in terms of time and resources.”

“The sinister element of the (alleged) crime is that a person she alleged committed the act was an actual real person that she had encountered,” he said.

Gardai had also believed that the accused was a flight risk as she had “no ties” to Ireland. Mr Keatings said the defendant's Brazilian boyfriend was living here.

Other bail conditions imposed by Judge Halpin were hat the accused observes a curfew and is contactable by mobile phone 24 hours per day.
