Apple's iPhone 6 has yet to be approved for sale by mainland authorities, but vendors in Beijing are already selling what they claim to be genuine models for more than 20,000 yuan (HK$25,200).

The phones have received regulatory approval for use on domestic frequencies, but still required one more licence before Apple or mainland telecoms players could sell the device, Xinhua reported yesterday.

Apple has not said when the smartphone will be released on the mainland, one of its biggest markets. The delay has triggered speculation the technology giant has run into difficulty getting permits from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which tests phones before they can be used on telecoms networks.

Apple still needed to obtain a network access licence, Xinhua said.

The company has not issued any comment about the mainland launch apart from saying it was working to bring the device to the market as soon as possible.

However, state media have reported dealers in Beijing claim to have already sold out of the model at a huge markup.

Sellers in the Zhongguancun district of Beijing, the city's main centre for buying computers and phones, said they had sold out within two days, at an average price of 14,000 yuan, China News Services reported.

The 16GB version is retailing for HK$5,588 in Hong Kong through the Apple store.

Dealers refused to say where the smartphones came from or how they had obtained them, the report said.

Some vendors told the South China Morning Post they did have some in stock, but with only a few remaining. Others said they would have to source them from elsewhere in the capital.

One vendor said he had a few models of the 16BG version in different colours, and was selling them for 17,000 yuan.

"The phones are from Australia. There are only a few left and they are very expensive," he said. "You'd better pre-order them from me now … The prices have gone crazy with all the hype. A guy bought an iPhone 6 from me for more than 20,000 yuan two days ago."

Another vendor said he only had one device remaining and wanted 22,000 yuan for it. He said the phone came from Hong Kong, but he would only show it after the money had been paid.

Disappointed Hong Kong shoppers denied iPhone 6, despite night spent queuing

Consumers complain they were misled by Apple Store staff over iPhone 6 sales but touts do a brisk trade in the iconic mobile models outside the showroom

Angry consumers gathered outside the Apple Store in Festival Walk on Friday morning after spending a sleepless night queuing, despite being told that the store would no longer accept walk-in buyers for the new iPhone 6.

Technology giant Apple had said it would only serve people on Friday who had preregistered for the new phone, but the store’s management had allowed hopefuls queue up at its doors since Thursday afternoon, failing to inform them of the condition until early the next day.

Between 20 and 30 people who had queued up rushed into the store after it opened, demanding to be sold the phone. The police were called, and were talking to the group.

“They could’ve told us last night when the mall closed,” said 31-year-old cleaner Tony Ku, who had been at the Kowloon Tong mall since 2pm on Thursday. “Apple is a liar – and this is a disgusting trick to get free publicity.”

Ku said that on Thursday night, the police, Apple Store staff and mall security had told those waiting they had “come to a consensus” that those in line could queue up outside until the mall reopened the following morning.

But when the group filed in to the showroom at 6.30am, Apple Store staff announced their wait had been in vain, Ku said.

“Actually, we had no idea there were people queuing up outside,” said Apple Store manager Patrick Wong, who was trying to remove the group when the South China Morning Post reporter arrived. Wong refused to answer further questions after making that statement.

Amidst the clapping and cheering by Apple Store staff welcoming the first iPhone 6 buyers in Hong Kong, the new phone owners touting the store’s signature white drawstring bags were keen to get the phones off their hands.

Many of the new models were resold immediately, right outside the store. Sellers waited around, while buyers – many from the mainland – flocked to them offering high prices.

The iPhone6 Plus with its bigger 5.5-inch screen had a better resell value, fetching HK$13,000 to HK$17,000 – double Apple’s retail price. The iPhone 6, with its smaller screen, was fetching around HK$8,000, said buyer Daniel Fong.

“But the prices can fluctuate,” he said and people were calling for figures too far out of his budget. He had only managed to procure a few models – of which all were 6 Plus.

Fong said he would be reselling the phones to bigger stores, earning just tens of dollars profit for each.

iPhone fever in South-West Florida as new models are released

ESTERO -iPhone lover after iPhone lover, the line outside the Apple store at Coconut Point Mall seemed endless Friday morning.

Don't believe us? Check out the video we posted on our Facebook page.

"I got here about 11 o'clock last night and kind of just ducked security through the parking lot until they let us form a line and got in nice with the lady running the line, so it worked out well," said Billy Batson, a customer.

Batson was the first person in line, and it didn't take long for others to join him.

"I wouldn't do this at Disney World. Believe me. Only for Apple," another customer, Ruthmarie Mitsch, said.

The line echoed lines across the country as the mobile giant gets ready to release the iPhone 6 and 6 plus.

Some people have been camping outside stores for hours - some even days.

The first person in line told us he arrived at 11 p.m. last night. After a refreshing nap in his car, the man started the line at 6 a.m.

Today is the official day that you can buy and see the new models in person.

The phones were available for pre-order on Friday, and Apple said it sold a record 4 million. The company also allowed customers to reserve a phone while waiting in line.

"They did reservations and I was able to get myself one and five or six hours later here I am," said Zach Rosen, a customer.
The phones are really limited today. So limited that some people in line this morning may walk away empty handed.

Also new is Apple's latest operating system. iOS 8 went live on Wednesday. The free download will be available to anyone with an iPhone 4S, 5, 5C or 5S.

Features on the new model include a larger screen, longer battery life and an "Apple Pay" mobile purchasing service.

"It's nice. It's a nice phone. The plus is a little too big for me, but it works well," said customer Justin Solomon.

The store sold out of phones an hour after opening. People who reserved or pre-ordered their phones waited in line through the afternoon to get them.

All the way from Norway to New York for iPhone

It seems that iPhone fever has caught every one around the world. Kristian Gundersen flew all the way from Norway to New York to be among the first people to buy Apple’s media-playing iPhone. He described the day as one of the best of his life.”It’s a dream come true. … It’s Christmas, birthday, New Year’s all rolled into one,” said the 23-year-old graphic designer who lined up for nearly 12 hours to buy the music and video playing phone.Gundersen was among several thousand people who lined up – some for up to five days – outside US Apple stores and outlets of AT&T, the exclusive iPhone carrier for the next two years. Stores opened at 6pm local time in each US time zone.

Albert Livingstone who is 62 years old stood in line with his friend Mark Stevenson, 50 in Chicago outside the Apple store to buy this latest gizmo. They rented a room across the street and took turns to sleep. Albert Livingstone’s wife thought he was crazy for lining up overnight in Chicago outside the Apple store. Also in Chicago 50-year-old business consultant James Budd joined the line at dawn to buy an iPhone for himself and for his 95-year-old grandmother because he hoped it would be “simple enough” for her to use.

The iPhone melds a phone, web browser and media player and costs $US500 or $US600 depending on the amount of memory.”It’s just a phone!” a San Francisco construction worker, driving by the Apple store in his pick-up truck, yelled at the waiting crowd. Sorry man no one is listening to you.

SAN ANTONIO -- It seems a good portion of the country has come down with a case of iPhone fever, and the Alamo City is no different. Eyewitness News spoke with several people camped outside the Apple Store before it opened its doors Friday.

Over 200 eager iPhone enthusiasts sat in muggy -- and at times wet -- weather to be some of the first consumers to get their hands on the sixth-generations Apple phone when The Shops at La Cantera open for business.

Out of all the campers we spoke with at the mall, all had the same insatiable appetite for an iPhone 6 Plus.

Will the retail store have enough product in stock to satisfy the urge? The jury is out until after 10 a.m. That's when employees dressed in colorful Apple store T-shirts will lift the gate and let the crowds in.

But long lines leading up to the release of a new iPhone are nothing new. In fact, it was the smaller lines at AT&T storefronts scattered across the city that caught our attention. Perhaps heading to one of those stores instead of the mall is San Antonio's best kept secret? Still, don't expect the scene there to be too quiet.

Lisa Barocas, an AT&T employee tweeted KENS 5 a photo of the over 100 people who lined up at the Highway 281 at Bitters Road location.
