Why we never have anymore strikes ah?

The last industrial strike we had in Singapore was led by the late Ong Teng Cheong.
We ask ourselves do we really need strikes to make our voices heard?
Diplomacy is the new way to go!

Secretary General Lim Swee Say of NTUC was quoted to have said “A job is the best welfare, employment is the best protection. Make every job a better job, every worker a better worker.”

The man was also quoted to have said something along the lines of “…it is better for unions who don’t strike and get its way, rather than strike and don’t get its way.”

maybe u should asked Ong teng cheong why he deemed the strike necessary.some people and management cannot be reasoned with,u must take actions to remove these tumors such as PAP and NTUC as quickly as possible before it metastasizes and spreads to other parts of ur body.

Ong Teng Cheong was from the NTUC anyway. It's more of how we are moving into diplomacy now. Hence why you won't expect world war coming up any time soon.

Same goes for negotiations with employer. No more strikes, more of negotiation to a common ground. Win-win situation for all.

that was when NTUC was still a real union,when it still had real power,when it was run by different leaders of hokkien and teochew dialect organisations,when it was for the people of singapore not just a mouthpiece for the PAP elites..........before it was overruned by PAPPIE cronies and turned into a sham and a farce.NTUC is not interested in negotiating for workers rights,they are just there to promote PAP's agenda and toe the line and shake leg and issue a statement every now and then,pretending they are doing something for the people.

My wife was one of the first batch in the diploma for HRM conducted in Singapore many years ago. On the lesson where there was to be a discussion on labour union strikes, the lecturer said that they would skip it - because it was not applicable to Singapore.

The reason there are no strikes in Singapore is because there is no justifiable reason(s) to hold one. There are democratic elections, the civil service functions, the police and army are not corrupt and operates from civilian appointed teams, the jursdiction is fair, and yes, there is freedom of speech and expression. So there is no reason to strike. Unhappy workers are free to leave their job and join a competitor if they are unhappy with their bosses. And most importantly, as long as the standard of char kwey teow is good, the locals can tolerate other unpleasantaries.

sinkies should consider themselves lucky they don't have any strikes or labor action. strikes are very common where i am, and beside being both a nuisance and inconvenience to society, they cause all to pay more in increased prices and taxpayers to cough up more in taxes.
