By the time people wake up tomorrow morning it will be clear whether Scotland is to become an independent country or remain in the United Kingdom.

Scotland’s chief counting officer Mary Pitcaithly is pencilled in to announce the historic result at 7am from the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston outside Edinburgh.

Hints of what the outcome is likely to be will drip in through the night as Scotland’s towns and cities release their results.

But tonight it emerged that thick fog in the Western Isles could disrupt the count in the referendum.

Western Isles Council is working with the pilot of a chartered plane which is waiting in Oban to fly to Benbecula to take ballot boxes from the southern half of the Western Isles.

Discussions are ongoing over when to make a final decision to abort the flight and call-in a fishing boat to transport the ballot boxes by sea.

However, the contingency plan to get a shellfish boat to carry the ballot boxes may also be hindered if the sea route is also affected by the heavy mist.

Despite that, the first results will be announced at 2am with the key areas of Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire ones to watch.

Both are fertile ground for the ‘Yes’ campaign and Alex Salmond will be desperate for a strong show of support for independence.

The two central belt local authorities are relatively poor with few voters born outside Scotland.

A strong ‘Yes’ showing in Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire will give an early sign that Scotland’s future in the Union really is hanging by a thread.

Working class Scots – and in particular, middle aged men in deprived towns – have moved strongly into Mr Salmond’s ‘Yes’ camp.

But if the No campaign manages a good turnout, Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling will be able to breathe a sigh of relief that the result is shifting their way.

The next counts to watch for are Dumfries and Galloway, and Falkirk – which are both being called at 3am.

Dumfries and Galloway is a rare Tory strong hold in Scotland which is heavily unionist.

The ‘No’ campaign needs a strong showing on a good turnout to keep any momentum it may have gained earlier in the night.

At-a-glance: Referendum night
Clackmannanshire is first result in

The first results are coming in for the referendum to decide whether Scotland should stay in the UK or become an independent country.

Clackmannanshire was the earliest to declare, with "No" winning 19,036 votes and "Yes" on 16,350 on an 89% turnout.

Counting will be carried out through the night, with individual results announced for each of Scotland's 32 local authority areas.

The final national result is expected after 06:30 BST (05:30 GMT) on Friday.

Polling expert Professor John Curtice of Strathclyde University said the Clackmannanshire result would be a "considerable disappointment" to the "Yes" side, who would have hoped to have done better in what is Scotland's smallest mainland local authority.

A YouGov on-the-day survey published shortly after polls closed suggested "No" was on 54% and "Yes" on 46%.

The survey questioned 1,828 people after they voted, together with the postal votes of 800 people, although it is not a traditional exit poll.

YouGov said its responses suggested there had been a small shift from "Yes" to "No" on polling day, and also that "No" supporters were slightly more likely to turn out to vote.

Don't ruin the Scots. They are a fine Nation with beautiful history. Do not sell your soul for the sake of economic survival. The Scots know more then we are. It an insult to the Scots.

Scotland votes 'no' to independence in historic referendum that keeps UK intact

Scots vote 'no' to independence in 27 out of 31 constituencies declared

Scotland has rejected independence in a referendum that leaves the United Kingdom intact but opens the door to wider autonomy following a huge turnout, preliminary results showed on Friday.

The “No” camp was ahead by 55.42 per cent to 44.58 per cent for the “Yes” camp with 31 out of 32 local areas counted.

“No” campaigners across Scotland cheered as the results came in, while “Yes” activists watched dejected and in tears.

The outcome dashes the hopes of the hundreds of thousands of Scots who voted to break away on Thursday in an unprecedented vote that ignited debate about governance in Britain but will reassure those worried about the economic risks of a break-up.

The financial markets rewarded the result with the pound rising against the dollar on the currency markets.

“We know that there’s going to be a majority for the ‘No’ campaign,” pro-independence First Minister Alex Salmond said in Edinburgh.

“Scotland has by majority decided not, at this stage, to become an independent country,” he said.

The result is a blow to the ambitions of a political lifetime for Salmond, although the strong result for the “Yes” campaign leaves open the possibility of another bid for independence in future.

There were some big wins for the “Yes” campaign, including in Glasgow, but the margin was not enough to mitigate a flood of “No” votes across Scotland.

The indication was that better-off and rural areas had voted “No” while urban centres and poorer parts voted “Yes”.

The “Yes” camp had been behind by a huge margin for months but in the past fortnight enjoyed a surge in support in the opinion polls. In the end, it did not materialise.

“Clearly the ‘No’ side has won,” said polling expert John Curtice, a professor of politics at Strathclyde University.

The vote would have brought to an abrupt end a union with England stretching back to 1707 and has been closely watched around the world, giving heart to separatist movements from Catalonia in Spain to Quebec in Canada.

Prime Minister David Cameron and Queen Elizabeth II were both expected to make announcements later on Friday, with British media reporting that Cameron would acknowledge the number of “Yes” votes and promise further devolution.

The outcome will be a huge relief for Cameron, who many suggested could not have survived in the event of a “Yes” victory.

In a tweet after the BBC called the result, Cameron said simply that he had spoken to the leader of the “No” campaign, Alistair Darling, “and congratulated him on a well-fought campaign”.

The historic decision gripped many Scots who previously took little interest in politics, including 16- and 17-year-olds allowed to vote in an election for the first time, divided families and lifelong friends between “Yes” and “No”.

There were queues outside polling stations on referendum day and many voters spoke emotionally about the most momentous political choice of their lives.

“Should Scotland be an independent country?” was the simple question facing voters in the nation’s 5,000 polling stations with “Yes” and “No” boxes below.

Crowds later partied through the night in Glasgow and Edinburgh, draped in the blue-and-white Scottish flags and setting off flares, as ballot boxes were brought in by helicopter and by boat from remote islands for the count.

In the run-up to the vote, Britain’s three main political parties promised greater powers for Scotland’s parliament including on tax and benefits in a last-minute bid to convince voters to stay in the union.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the referendum had shown a “strong demand for change” and insisted the British government in London must now make good on its promises.

“Scotland has changed forever, there’s no turning back,” she said on Friday.

The promise of greater powers for Scotland has prompted politicians in Cameron’s Conservative party to call for the same treatment for England.

Newspapers in northern England united to demand the devolution of powers to their regions in a “fair deal after so many promises were made to Scotland during the referendum campaign”.

A lot of the debate had focused on the economy, what currency an independent Scotland would use and whether it could be a member of the European Union.

Scotland’s Parliament, opened in 1999, holds some powers devolved from Westminster to set policy in certain areas of domestic policy, such as health and education.

Chart of the day: Don't panic, Scotland

chartoftheday-grpahic-0919.jpg

Today we find out how Scotland has voted, a difficult decision where the economy is just one of the issues. The chart of the euro against sterling shows extreme stability, mapping out a small a), b), c), type corrective bounce - nothing spectacular so that historical volatility is stuck around 4 per cent. Implied volatility for one-month call options has ballooned to 14 per cent, suggesting some latecomers are overreacting.

You are such a negative and narrow person. Why should a act of national self determination be considered a random act of rebellion?

People are trying to determine their own density. If you don't know anything about this don't pour cold water on them.

Not really, Scotland independence would most likely mean it joining the EU...out of the frying pan and into the fire.

There is no reason for Scotland to be independent: linguistically and culturally they are not much different from the English. Scots have been largely Anglicized, no kilts or bagpipes can change this fact.

Besides, London hadn't really oppressed Scotland... quite a different story for Catalonia and Taiwan.

Scotland had been part of the UK since King James the First. His mother's side, Mary Queen of Scots, ruled Scotland. Before that Scotland and England were always fighting, just like Game of Thrones. Apart from the Oliver Cromwell incident, the Union had largely brought peace and ushered in the Industrial Revolution.

Great day to tell those Braveheart wannabes to sit down and shut up.

I agree.. there is no reason to be independent. Even the North Irish, who waged war due to sectarian/religious differences, have stopped banging their heads against the wall.

U are absolutely right. The decision to separate from malaya was not his to make. there should have been a referendum, just like the Scots decision to separate from the UK. At the most he consulted only a handful of people for a decision that impacted millions of people. As a lawyer, he should have known that a referendum was the one legal lawful way to go. As a dictator, he knew he could not have a referendum. Most sinkies at that time would have voted to stay in the Malayan union and he would be out of a job. Other things that should have gone to a referendum was the 6.9 million population white paper, and the enhanced powers of the presidency.
