Residents at Bukit Panjang, Changi and Yishun will get some relief from parking woes next year.

The Housing Board (HDB) has started building high-rise mechanised carparks as tall as 15 storeys at these three estates, as part of a trial to see if mechanised parking systems (MPS) are suitable for HDB estates.

Costing more than $18 million in total, mechanised carparks at these estates will add 219 parking spaces, up from 717 currently.

These estates were picked because of a shortage of parking spaces and the lack of space to build new multi-storey carparks.

"The MPS is not new in Singapore: several private condos and hotels have it. But it will be new in a HDB town," wrote National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan in his blog on Sunday afternoon.

He was at the Bukit Panjang HDB estate to launch the construction of a new 15-storey mechanised carpark at Bangkit Road, next to an existing multi-storey carpark.

Is over 18 mil too expensive to build this carpark?

219 total lots over 3 carparks of 15 storey each = 73 total car parks per estate or 4.86 car park per floor. Not a lot of extra space added IMHO, when compared to the existing car park designs. Think PAPzi scholars trying to squeeze every inch of space for more commercial uses.. $$$$ huat ah!~

In terms of cost is $18M over 3 estates = $6M per carpark for 73 lots each carpark (219/3) = $82192 per car park lot.

Assume each car park can tahan 20 years, so total number of hours over 20 years is (365 days x 20 years x 24 hrs) = 175200hrs

So each car park lot will cost $82192/175200hrs = $0.47 per hour to park, based on building costs..

So you can see how much the car park tenderer will profit from the hourly car park charge, with the above simple costing in mind... :kma:

Yup , you're right bro... and the waiting time and queue to retrieve each car was not mentioned too.. the number of car lifts in these mechanized car parks shld be only 2, so the wait and wait will take very long.. not to mention the high car park costs to build and maintain these car park condos... => super high car park rates..

Every year will say increase in operating costs to jack up the car park rates, till almost equivalent to shenton way parking liao... good luck to those living in these areas... high car park $$$ and long waiting times....ta bus better la...

20 years to recoup costs....not to mention ur carpark has to be full 100% of the time which is impossible during the day,not to mention its a high tech carpark so god knows how many times it will breakdown.

I think once they start building these high tech car park condos, the existing big car park will be demolished to make way for another shopping mall, duplication is not tolerated.. Papzis wont let any square inch of land to be wasted not generating $$$.... the high tech car park will be full during the day to serve the shoppers and the residents at night... huat ah!

How about not having so many people on this island? Less people = less vehicles = less congestion and less carpark woes.

Building cost to claim from who?

The cost will be claimed from those who do not drive a car & those who drive a car, the revenue from the car park, include GST, the profits will be theirs....not passed down to you or me....maybe in a 'little bribe'...like GST voucher etc..
