Pinky ropes in his sister to plead for support ahead of Roy Ngerng's court verdict

It's obvious that the self-styled "atheist" angel from heaven's been called upon to plead for support for Leegime ahead of a court verdict on Roy Ngerng that may potentially sway the electorate in Roy's favor.

Pinky's sister, head of some brain institute, has written a lengthy article in The Sunday Times today to persuade Sinkies to continue to support the corrupt Leegime. Read the article to see for yourself how she shamelessly calls the governments led by her tyrannical father and avaricious brother "exceptional" and how she praises both men to the skies for their "foresight".

But are Pinky and Old Fart really exceptional in their leadership? Do they have genuine foresight or just lucky in some of their predictions? Among world governments, Leegime is the only one in the world that claims to have exceptional foresight as a strategic asset that propels Sinkieland from a Third World country to a First World one.

In an article submitted by a TRE reader, Edmund produces an article that debunks the myth the gift of "exceptional foresight" that both Pinky and Old Fart are thought to possess.

Sacrificing now for a better tomorrow

by Lee Wei Ling, The Sunday Times, September 14 2014, pp 39

I had stopped reading the newspapers for some weeks as there seemed to be nothing but bad news. But the photograph of the gothic-looking Jurong Rock Caverns on the front page of The Straits Times on Sept 3 caught my attention. The underground space would free up 60ha of space above ground - the equivalent of about 80 football fields.

The cavern took six years of planning and over eight years of construction at a cost of $950 million. It can store up to 1.47 million cubic metres of liquid hydrocarbons, which can fill more than 500 Olympic-sized pools.

Such a huge project requires foresight, vision and staying power to fring to fruition, and this is not the first time Singapore has completed such projects.

The best example of such massive infrastructure projects from our past is the Jurong Industrial Estate. In the 1960s, the received wisdom was that multinational corporations (MNCs) were exploiters of cheap land, labour and raw materials. Third World leaders generally believed this theory of neo-colonial exploitation. Singapore leaders Dr Goh Keng Swee and Mr Lee Kuan Yew were not impressed.

Singapore had no natural resources for MNCs to exploit. All it had were hardworking people, basic infrastructure and a Government determined to deliver. If MNCs could give workers jobs and impart know-how to Singaporeans, why shouldn't we welcome them?

Dr Goh and Mr Lee thus decided to start the Jurong Industrial Estate. The estate - Singapore's largest infrastructure development - covered over 3,600ha with roads, sewers, drainage, power, gas and water all laid out. Other massive infrastructure projects include Jurong Island. The artificial island was conceived in the 1980s to support Singapore's growth as a petrochemical hub.

It was created by shooting tonnes of sand in a rainbow arc into the sea to fill up the water channels separating the seven southern islands. It was a bold and innovative way to increase our land size and attract investments to create good jobs.

The costly clean-up of the Singapore and Kallang rivers is yet another example. If Mr Lee had not pushed this project through despite the hefty price - thousands of businesses along the rivers were moved - waterways, like Jakarta's Ciliwung River or Manila's Pasig River, would be flowing sluggishly through downtown Singapore.

Mr Lee later imagined a Venice-like site in the reclaimed Marina Bay area. So Gardens by the Bay was born at a cost of $1.05 billion. Now, the combination of Marina Bay Sands, the Marina Barrage and the Gardens presents a magnificent sight.

The Housing and Development Board was established in 1960. It was headed by a man with sharp business sense, Mr Lim Kim San.

A British colonial report on housing had noted that the Singapore of the 1940s and 1950s had "one of the world's worst slums - a disgrace to a cilivised community".

That was soon history. By any measure, Singapore's achievement in public housing was remarkable.
Singapore is a small country. We have done well so far, reaching First World status in record time. This is not the usual trajectory of small countries with no resources.

We got here because successive governments were led by people with gumption and foresight. Equally, if not more importantly, the people were prepared to gel together as one and accept short-term hardships in exchange for long-term hope.

I sense that the ground has shifted in recent years. We have become more demanding of immediate satisfaction and less willing to persevere when there are difficulties. Our country will be in trouble if our expectations can only be met at a price we are unwilling to pay.

We must emulate our pioneer generation: Work hard, be willing to sacrifice for a better future and accept necessary trade-offs.
The Government must be able to persuade our citizens why we must adopt a particular difficult course.

Only an exceptional people led by exceptional leadership could have built Jurong Industrial Estate, Jurong Island, the Jurong Rock Caverns and, in time to come, the Jurong Lake Gardens. If Singapore is to continue to survive and thrive, both its Government and people must remain exceptional.

A post submitted by Edmund to TRE (http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/09/14/lhls-about-turn-in-allowing-ft-workers-into-retail-sector/)

Dear Bros & Sis of TRE,

While researching through the old ST archives, I found the following article about what our PM Lee said in 1987 (he was called BG Lee, Minister of Trade and Industry, then):

It said, “The Government is reluctant to allow foreign workers in the retail trade as it does not want the industry to develop a permanent dependence on them, Brigadier-General (Res) Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday.”

Just recalled this article was published at the time when Singapore was in a recession. There were CPF cuts, rebates were offered etc by the Govt at the time.

It looks like words and promises made yesteryear would determine who they would become today. But then, once they become someone, they can change their position as easily as changing their underwear.

At the time, LHL said foreign workers were containable in ‘manufacturing’ – when their terms are up, they would go back.

“Manufacturing is containable. It’s a factory, you bring in 50 workers, they have a dormitory and are well looked after. When their term is over, they go back,” he said.

But is this the case today? Most factory and construction workers will extend their stay once their 2-year work permit is up. And to help extend their stay, these workers have to pay unscrupulous agents or bosses money! So, end up most of them will get extension. So what is happening now?

Then LHL tried to explain why, at the time, Govt didn’t allow foreign workers into retail and services sectors.

He said, “If foreign workers were allowed in the retail and services sectors, they would ‘scatter throughout our economy’, a situation that would be ‘very hard to unwind’.”

But what is the situation today? Pinoys, PRCs etc dominating our service sector! The worst is pinoys even try to hire pinoys into their company, trying to also make a quick buck or 2 from their fellow compatriots.

Why the sudden change of heart, Mr Lee?

My guess is, because Govt didn’t want to affect the rental market and the SME retailers were all drowning in high cost of operation, LHL decided the easy way out, let the cheap foreign workers come into retail and service sectors as well.

It just goes to show that this guy couldn’t care less of Singaporeans. He cares more for his GLCs. As long as GLCs keep making money and Temasek/GIC is happy, he is happy.

I have typed out the whole article for all to read below. You decide what kind of PM we have today:

BG Lee on foreign workers in retail trade

The Government is reluctant to allow foreign workers in the retail trade as it does not want the industry to develop a permanent dependence on them, Brigadier-General (Res) Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday.

Speaking to reporters at the end of his tour of Kaki Bukit and Eunos constituencies, the Trade and Industry Minister said the situation was different for manufacturing, where foreign workers are allowed.

“Manufacturing is containable. It’s a factory, you bring in 50 workers, they have a dormitory and are well looked after. When their term is over, they go back.”

But he said employers in areas, such as supermarkets or barbers’ shop, would not retrench their foreign workers, even if their scale of operation came down.

If foreign workers were allowed in the retail and services sectors, they would “scatter throughout our economy”, a situation that would be “very hard to unwind”.

BG Lee’s explanation follows last week’s appeal by short-staffed retailers to be allowed to recruit foreign workers.

The retailers claim they are critically short of up to 2,000 sales staff and are unable to recruit Singaporeans. The problem has been aggravated by two new giant stores at Marina Square due to open in the next few weeks.

The Singapore National Employers’ Federation is expected to put up a case soon to the Labour Ministry in support of the retailers.

BG Lee’s five-hour walkabout also saw him answering questions from the many residents he met and hearing their views.

One request, by Mr Roger Chong, chairman of Bedok North Industrial Park C, was that the temporary rental rebates for factories offered in 1985 be extended, Mr Chong made the request in a letter which he handed to the minister.

BG Lee, describing the petition as “a reasonable request” which had also been made by several other entrepreneurs, said the rebates were meant “for a limited period, for the recession”.

Although the downturn was “receding”, rental rates did not necessarily have to return to 1984 levels as the market situation now was different.

The HDB and JTC would have to make an assessment of what the market rate was and how much the present rates should be revised by.

He expected the Government to make a decision on the matter at the end if the year.

BG Lee, who visited a temple and a mosque, was also asked his views on religion.

He said the various religious groups in Singapore were doing constructive work but felt they should not go beyond providing social services.

He said: “Whether it’s the politician fighting the Almighty, or a priest talking about politics with the Almighty as his authority, both are equally disastrous.”

As for his personal religious beliefs, he said: “I am not religious, that is a matter of personal inclination. Each person has to find his own equilibrium and covenant.”

This is bull shit. The foreign workers and bosses are now found every where in the retail business. You name it, you can find them in it.

In Geylang and Chinatown, and of course, elsewhere, the tiongs are there. In Little India, the ah nehs are there and everywhere in serangoon road up to mustafa centre and beyond. In Orchard, the pinoys are there and everywhere.

"We have become more demanding of immediate satisfaction and less willing to persevere when there are difficulties. Our country will be in trouble if our expectations can only be met at a price we are unwilling to pay."

Is she criticising her own? Immediate satisfaction by demanding million dollar salaries? Increasing the population by lax immigration policies just to boost corporate and government profits without willing to persevere on how to solve the difficult problems of stagnating wages and low birth rate?
