The film has been/is on the film festival circuit so viewing copies are already out there - with the ban you can be rest assured that copies will become available imminently - our neighbours may think leaking it would be a nice jibe.

From rottentomatoes:

Movie Info

In the 1960s and 1970s, Singaporeans, who were activists, student leaders or Communists were exiled from their country. Fifty years later, despite resettling in countries such as the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Thailand, it is clear that the diaspora still holds Singapore and the idea of returning home in their hearts and minds. TO SINGAPORE, WITH LOVE follows the exiled protagonists in the film, as they undertake a trip to Singapore's closest neighbor, Malaysia, where they attend reunions, memorials and stay in a hotel that overlooks their homeland.

Unrated, 1 hr. 10 min.

Directed By: Tan Pin Pin

Yaccob: There is no ther truth but the PAP truth. Be warned.

But the key point is whether the G believes that such paternalism is needed to safeguard national security – or whether it is merely insisting on its own narrative of history. As an IPS academic said in TODAY, a determined audience would get hold of the film somehow. Better to un-ban it and have the G release its own version of events. After all, if the film makes its rounds on the Internet, wouldn’t the G have to counter it? If it is such a detriment to national security, it would have to do something about its exposure.

Re: PAP bans documentary as it can't handle the truth

They’d done it before, and they did it again: the Media Development Authority (MDA) on Wednesday banned a film, ensuring that it would not be screened in Singapore.

The reason for their decision, though, was pretty bizarre. Tan Pin Pin’s film, ‘To Singapore, With Love’, was banned because it “undermined national security”.

It is unclear how the MDA thinks a documentary could undermine national security. Sure, Tan’s film features Singaporean political exiles, people whose perspectives might not fit in with the “official” narrative of Singapore’s history. But how can the reminiscing of exiled Singaporeans cause any credible threat to the country’s safety and stability?

What is happening here is just a blatant act of censorship, pure and simple.

There are periods in Singapore’s history that are fraught with controversy. The government insists that those detained under Operation Coldstore or Operation Spectrum were dangerous plotters who would undermine the stability of a fledgling nation. This was the “truth” that was splashed in the newspapers and written in the history books.

But alternative accounts have cast doubt upon this “truth”. Work done by historians like Dr Thum Ping Tjin have shown us that there is more to Singapore’s history.

Commenting on the banning of ‘To Singapore, With Love’, Dr Thum – who has already seen the film – had this to say: “I am disappointed for several reasons but in particular two: The first is the government’s unwillingness to face up to the past despite the vast amounts of documentary evidence which has now been declassified, and their continued insistence on clinging to a false narrative of the past even though it has been so thoroughly debunked. It’s the equivalent of the South African government continuing to insist that Nelson Mandela was a terrorist, or the South Korean government continuing to insist that Kim Dae Jung was a terrorist.”

Much as one would disagree, the government is free to put up their version of events and even stick with it – something that they have already done in MDA’s press statement. The problem really kicks in when they refuse to let any other version of events exist, thus removing Singaporeans' ability to consider a variety of views and make up their own minds.

We’ve seen plenty of nostalgia in the run up to the giant SG50. Much has been made about our decades-long journey as a country, and a lot of effort put into honouring the Pioneer Generation and preserving their stories. Tan Pin Pin is even one of seven Singaporean filmmakers who will be putting together a movie to celebrate the past and look forward to the future.

The banning of ‘To Singapore, With Love’, flies in the face of all these endeavours.

Pin Pin’s film banned because its version history different from LKY's - SATIRE

Singaporeans from all walks of life, who object to anything that is different from what is stated in Lee Kuan Yew’s memoirs, applauded the state censors’ decision to ban Tan Pin Pin’s film, To Singapore, With Love on Sept. 10, 2014.

They said this is a sensible thing to do as anything not recorded in Lee Kuan Yew’s memoirs cannot possibly have happened.

Chuan Bai Yi, a staunch Lee Kuan Yew supporter, said: “What the political exiles said in Tan Pin Pin’s film cannot be accurate because they were not the events recorded in Lee Kuan Yew’s memoirs.”

“Imagine later this film become very popular and widespread, then LKY’s books will have to move to the fiction section.”

This view is widely held among some other Singaporeans.

Zhuo Zhong Tong, another white-wearing fanatic, agreed and said: “Lee Kuan Yew’s memoirs is the definitive history. Everything else is fake. It is impossible one man’s view of the world can be less accurate than everyone else’s views of the world combined.”

http://newnation.sg/2014/09/tan-pin...f-history-differs-from-lee-kuan-yews-memoirs/

“Bringing this idea to its logical conclusion, this means that your grandmother does not exist because she was not recorded in LKY’s autobiography.”

This has led to other Singaporeans, who are convinced a film can be a dangerous tool of raising one’s consciousness to the extent that it needs to be suppressed, to denounce its screening and public consumption.

San Ji Pian, another Singaporean, said the censorship board did the right thing to ban To Singapore, With Love: “Yes, I am sure a bunch of old people talking on film will taint my virgin eyes, and hence, it should be banned.”

“MDA is taking away an opportunity for us Singaporeans to see it and to have a conversation about it and our past that this film could have started or contributed to,” Ms Tan said in her statement. “It is vital for us to have that conversation on our own terms, especially on the eve of our 50th birthday. We need to be trusted to be able to find the answers about ourselves, for ourselves.”

Singaporeans are indeed mature enough to handle such conversations, such questioning, as Mr Jeyaretnam put it.

The real question is: are those like the MDA and Dr Yaacob mature enough to have that conversation and to allow Singaporeans to have that dialogue? Or will they hide behind highly suspect and dubious excuses like “national security” to ban what the government finds objectionable?

“It is my deepest regret that we cannot have such a conversation here today,” Ms Tan said. “Now, the irony that a film about Singapore exiles is now exiled from Singapore as well – this is not something I ever wanted or hoped for.”

One would, however, still hope that the SG50 committee will honour what its member said – and will let our exiles have a place to tell their story – which is a part of our collective story – on their own terms, and not one dictated by the government.

Until LKY is publicly denounced as a traitor and then his entire clan excommunicated, there is probably nothing to celebrate for SG50.

It is, after all, the 50th anniversary of getting kicked out by Malaysia.

Re: PAP bans documentary as it can't handle the truth

What the film makers did not mention and that most people do not seem to see is that the crux of the MDA's decision to ban the film centred on the fact that many of the interviewees were alleged communist and there was still a threat to national security from these supposed communists or commnunist sympathesizers that fled Singapore.

How than can the MDA explain the over 900,000 PRC citizens allowed into Singapore are from a communist country, and belong to the communist party of china? How many hard core active communists are in this group, and how many of these people are supporters of communist ideology? How many of them recited the communist mantra when they were in school, or attended mandatory classes and indoctrination about the virtues of communism? The PAP does not seem to have a problem letting these people in. They also don't have a problem with trading and investing in a communist country. SO, now, how can MDA justify the continued hatred to this group of singaporeans?

Totally agree.

According to official records kept by China, LHL gave speeches at the Chinese Communist Party School twice....

Every Chinese undergraduate must study and pass a compulsory subject called Marxist ideology and China's interpretation of it before they are awarded a bachelor's degree.

The Constitution of the People's Republic of China specifically states that China is communist.

That's because the communist bogeyman and 'national security threat' are just lies, excuses for censoring a movie that does not parrot the PAP narrative. Communism is dead. Even China's economy is capitalist; the only thing communist is the authoritarian one-party rule

The real reason for the ban is to preserve old fart's mythical legacy of founding the nation with a few good men and turning it from 3rd to 1st World in one generation. Because if the myth is destroyed, PAP's credibility will be destroyed, and its legitimacy to rule will go.

It's all about party survival, not about 'communists'.

Maybe more than party survival. It's dynastic survival. If the masses know that old bastard is a traitor during WW2 and later dealt heavy handed with all those who threatened his cling to power, his bloodline will lose respect and deemed unfit to rule.

Then again, I'm not sure if majority of sinkies will place country before self interests to do the patriotic thing even if they know of these. News are out there, however many who can read and surf net refused to accept the truth or can't be bothered so long as they can live their sinkified lives.
