9 hour service disruptions and frequent breakdowns of the public transport systems are the hallmarks of the cockup nature of the SAF generals leadership and management skills.

The enemy divisions would have over-run little red dot while NSFs are still stuck at MRT stations!

Rush to wait, wait to rush. That is the hallmark of the SAF, isn't it?

Many people here talk about the militarisation of our civilian life. Actually, the reverse has been true since the SAF scholarship scheme was introduced, i.e our SAF has systemically been civilianised, i.e. the PAPzis have been putting civil servants who have no inclination for military service in uniform so that the PAPzis can train these people future senior civil servants and / or their own candidates.

For those of us who served in the 70s and 80s, we will recall the few real soldiers who enjoyed military service and being in the field, think LTC Clarence Tan, LTC James Chia, WO1 (later CPT) Hong Seng Mak, etc. How many characters like them are there now?

This selfish use of the SAF, and grossly unfair treatment of Singaporeans when it comes to NS liability will weaken the SAF irreparably.

In a way he is very smart to do this. These are quite important appointments and he surely would want to place his own people that he can trust in those positions. Anyone in power who has savvy will do the same thing.

You're right that the SAF has been 'civilianized'. But the main aim is not to produce future senior civil servants or election candidates.

The main aim is to prevent the SAF from being transformed into an independent locus of power, where the top echelons (generals, colonels) can form their own power bases. Old fart is a tyrant, and like all tyrants he knows that the one way for his grip on power to be broken is through a military coup. That's why senior SAF officers are rotated through various departments on fixed short terms to prevent power bases from forming. When they're 'retired', they'll be parachuted into top positions in civilian organizations or GLCs to co-opt them and pre-empt political dissent.

The constant rotation of civilian scholars through top positions before enforced early retirement means that the SAF will never be a highly professional and efficient institution. But it doesn't matter because the survival of the PAP and their cronies is key, not the defence of the nation.
