Not that scary if one is NOT in a high rise building that can pancake, Pyne Gould Corporation building & CTV building (like SG hotel New World).

4 earthquakes hit Christchurch, 2010-2011, liquefaction in many areas, chimneys crashing down. Cracks in many old buildings that needed to be evacuated and abandoned.
Driving on the road during earthquake makes steering slightly difficult. On the ground it feels like sea sickness setting in. A loud roaring sound could be heard during the quake which can last around 30 seconds.

Was in Lahore, Pakistan in the early 90s. Was told when I checked in the hotel not to book a room too high up as earthquakes occurred often there and caused power outages forcing one to take the stairs as the elevators won't work. I heeded the advice and booked a room on the third floor. True enough, there were tremors that night - five in total. Was expecting it and wasn't afraid but it felt weird. Was watching a movie on TV when the first one hit and the power went off, so missed the rest of the movie. The people there take it as normal.

Cheers!
