The People's Liberation Army (PLA) would soon take delivery of a new generation of the country's aerial drone, state media reported yesterday.

State television showed a test of the Rainbow 4 (CH-4) hunter-killer drone successfully hitting a target with a missile.
The technology was developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology for reconnaissance and military strikes.

The latest move comes as the PLA is actively and publicly promoting the use of drones by its military personnel.

State media reported last week on the use of a drone to knock out a simulated enemy command vehicle during counter-terrorism exercises in Inner Mongolia .

State media have also reported that drones have been deployed in Xinjiang in recent weeks to help in the search for terror suspects.

A Pentagon report in June said the resources and technological awareness deployed in China's drone programme meant it could rival the United States' systems in the future.

Li Pingkun , the head of the Rainbow 4 project at the aerospace corporation, told state television the drone could make a long-distance hit on a target with a margin of error of less than 1.5 metres.

He said the system was very precise because it used several methods to guide missiles or smart bombs to their target.

The Rainbow 4 was developed as the PLA's answer to the MQ-9 Reaper, a hunter-killer drone mainly used by the US military for reconnaissance and high-precision air strikes, according to mainland media reports.

The Rainbow had gradually caught up with the Reaper in terms of targeting precision, flight length and payloads, but still fell short in some areas, including its top speed, the reports said.

The Reaper can fly at up to 740km/h for a surprise attack, much faster than the Rainbow's top speed of 235km/h. The PLA also has limited experience in using drones in combat zones.

The Rainbow drone is about nine metres long and has an 18-metre wingspan. It can fly for about 40 hours. The drone can carry up to four missiles and its ground control and support centre can be packed into and moved around in two trucks.

The Rise Of China's Drone Fleet And Why It May Lead To Increased Tension In Asia
By Christopher Harress@Charress[email protected]
on January 11 2014 12:30 PM

China has successfully flown its first stealth drone for around 20 minutes in Chengdu, again narrowing the gap between its aerial prowess and that of Western nations. The flight took place in November 2013, and while appearing to be a harmless test flight, the drone’s capability may carry a more alarming message than some might think.

China’s fleet of drones has become the most extensive fleet among the few countries that operate them and that has raised questions about stability in the region. Recently, U.S. ally Japan has become irate over Chinese drone flights over the disputed Senaku Island group, called Diaoyu in China, saying they will shoot down any drone that refuses to leave Japanese airspace. Then, to further complicate matters, there is the planned increase of American troops in the demarcation zone in South Korea expected this February.

It was reported in Vice magazine recently that China has copied nearly all of America’s drone fleet, although nothing has led officials to believe they stole any specific technology, despite cyberattacks on American aviation manufacturers.

Those attacks, which have been occurring for about six years according to government sources, were only discovered last year. It is believed that a Chinese espionage group has stolen hundreds of terabytes of information from over 141 companies across 20 major industries, including aerospace and defense, according to a report by Mandiant, an information-security company based in Virginia. Backing up this evidence is China’s Lijian stealth drone, which bares a very striking resemblance to the American-built Northrup Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) X-47B . It has also been reported by various media that America’s F-35 joint strike fighter was delayed because of espionage fears.

Obama has called for a stop to cyberattacks on the U.S., but China has said that they were the work of rogue hackers.

Drones

China currently has over 900 different types of drones, ranging from micro, blimps, unmanned combat air vehicles, and rotary-wing UAV.

Here are three of the most common Chinese drones and the American drones they resemble:

Chengdu Xianglong is almost identical to the RQ-4 Global Hawk. While not possessing a global capability, it does cover the Asian and Pacific area sufficiently.

Chengdu Pterodactyl 1 is similar in appearance to the General Atomics-built Reaper and Predator drones. It is primarily for aerial reconnaissance and surveillance but can be fitted with air-to-surface weapons.

Sharp Sword looks just like the X-47B American Drone, but little is known about the Chinese version except that it will be used primarily for electronic surveillance and launching missiles.

On the contrary, Chinese are known to copy from Americans. You name it. From food to apparels to technology. Perhaps u would like to change your thread title?

But me thinks that it's too late as u have exceeded the 5 minutes allowed.

In the future, and possibly in our life time, wars between countries will be fought by humans in the safety of their command centres using satellites, lasers, drones and robots on the ground or from the air. Pilots and soldiers will be redundant.

No NS in sinkieland when non-humans become the next generation of soldiers for the SAF?

look we already know that China has the capability to copy anything in the world from the Effiel tower to the white house to sydney bridge to the Castle of Hogwarts.....

for all we know all the drones could just be plastic tamiya models with Papier-mâché electronics.

The only thing left for China to do after spending so much on Military is to go into a full-blown war to test it's military capabilities and to send a signal of its strength. However, the US and the West are still too much for them to overcome any legitimate (or not) reasons to launch any attacks.

Just like pearl harbour attack was intentionally orchestrated to give the US legitimate reasons to join a war to launch the atom bomb, China is building the pressure with a few countries with the boundary issues. Not a certainty, but a distinct possibility in the years to come.

Would like to see China working more in areas that will benefit the rest of the world. Things like Disney type productions, music, dance and fashion. Their direction seems mostly in destructive military endeavours.

Cheers!
