Engineering was the top starting-pay sector for degree and diploma holders, according to a survey released by global management consulting firm Hay Group.

SINGAPORE: Fresh graduates will see a small rise in starting salaries this year, according to a survey released by global management consulting firm Hay Group on Tuesday (Aug 26).

The annual Hay Group Fresh Graduate Pay Survey showed that the average monthly starting salary for degree holders in three qualification categories - without Honours, with Honours (Second Lower) and with Honours (Second Upper) - is S$2,741, S$2,853, S$2,939 respectively, for 2014.

By comparison, the average monthly starting salary for degree holders in 2013 was S$2,683 for Bachelor Degree (without Honours), S$2,795 for Bachelor Degree (Honours, Second Lower) and S$2,892 for Bachelor Degree (Honours, Second Upper).

In addition, one out of five employers placed an average premium of S$214 per month for local university graduates compared with non-local university graduates, the survey said.

As for diploma holders, they can expect an average starting salary of S$1,878 per month, about 2 per cent more than last year's figure, according to Hays. The survey was based on the salary expectations of 95 organisations.

TOP PAYING SECTOR: ENGINEERING

For those with a Bachelor's degree (without Honours), Engineering commanded the highest average salary of S$2,888 per month, followed by jobs in the Legal (S$2,856 per month) and Information Technology (S$2,816 per month) sectors, the survey reflected.

Similarly for diploma holders, Engineering graduates command the highest average starting salary of S$1,976 per month, with Marketing coming in second at S$1,938 per month and Administration/Support/Service taking third place at S$1,925 per month.

The Hay Group study also showed that employers are likely to pay up to 46 per cent more in starting salaries for average degree holders compared with diploma holders.

Similarly, employers place a premium of approximately 4.10 per cent and 7.22 per cent on a Bachelor Degree with Honors (Second Lower) and a Honors (Second Upper), respectively, compared to an average degree holder.

One in three employers surveyed also said that they are likely to provide an average premium of S$195 per month as an incentive to male employees who have completed National Service.

Why nobody want to study and do engineering? All want to be elite investment banker?

Given law of supply and demand
When very little ppl study engineering, supply of engineering professionals go down.

When supply go down while demand is constant, price goes up so you get good salary!
QzSDchF.jpg

Investment banker only take in cream of crop ppl from dean list, stanford, havard, oxford and Princeston. Imagine you study so hard in NTU/NUS never get dean list, go job interview kanna rejected, end up have to take the low class finance job like banking ops, sell insurance and credit card.

Even if you get into banking ops, also the same fate. You get same type of salary as engineering considering pay per hour.

Worse still, you have to worry that you kanna AXE anytime when recession comes in. Engineering is more recession proof.

Stop and think for a moment. Dont blindly chiong banking and finance.

for example OCBC's MA program, they make you do online test, sing and dance routine because they receive 1000 resumes for just 10 slots.

Bloomberg's interview got 450 apply for just 15 fresh jobs. And those arnt even elite jobs.

You go interview for engineering job, only 1 or 2 resumes sent in and you have very little competitors.

Why nobody wants to do Engineering anymore? All want to do investment banking. Engineering is ok mah?

Elite investment banking = high pay, high competition
Engineering = moderate pay, moderate competition
Why would you want to take the risk? A job is not about risk taking. A job is about stable income. If you want to take career risks might as well start your own business

Engineers are too good.Everything is automated. Its an irony. The number of ppl (the demand) required is thus reduced. Unless they venture into research kind of stuff.
The weakness of our current redistribution system is slowly revealing itself.

Engineering jobs, piss poor pay and unfavorable working conditions, this is due to huge influx of low pay foreign engineers from Philippines, Myanmar and India. Crazy to be an engineer in Singapore.

Young Singaporeans are shunning engineering jobs due the 3 "D" factor: 1) Dangerous 2) Dirty 3) Difficult

Engineering job are computerized and without computer software engineer cant think.

So engineer design computerized engine and there less workers are required.

Look at car industry full automated.

Fully automated means more car produced and where find consumers?

Your are fucked when you train human to be engineers causing more unemployment.

Re: Survey: Engineering was the top starting-pay sector for degree and diploma holder

look at the pay scale of diploma $2k only and $24K a year? $24K was 1980 pay scale for engineers.

Under PAP no future, still pays your children $24K and take away $48K of your children 2 years youth to be NSF slaves.

50 years of PAP ends p with only $24K for diploma, so under one party rule country where got future.

You should know what to do in 2016 or next election VTO PAP.

Re: Survey: Engineering was the top starting-pay sector for degree and diploma holder

i'm looking for an engineering expert in precision timing protocol based on ieee 1588v2, and it's so difficult to find one. i need him or her to engineer a system to measure my end-to-end packet delay variation down to single digit microseconds with a client-server methodology of slave to grandmaster. this is because i need to time my shit exactly to time of day calibration. a gps feed is my primary source, but i need a backup and alternative. the shitting precision requires phase and time synchronization, not just frequency sync. when laymen say "timing is everything", i would like to correct and say "timing for shitting it right is everything." :*:

Only reason they need Singaporean engineer is that they need headcount to shore up their quota , to hire more foreigners.

Things are simpler if we try to visualize the macro shit to just you and me.

If either you or me invent something that can increase productivity, it is something to be welcomed as we both enjoy the same fruits at reduced efforts. More time for exploring other stuff. Does the current distribution system operates in such manner? No. Thus we have this Luddite mindset among ppl. Btw, Luddites are not unhappy with technology. "Luddite = anti technology" is a shallow interpretation by scumbags.

Tried drilling down to the root cause....seems like its still about land. Ownership of land.
