Courting the Malay Vote

Around this time in the last electoral cycle, the PAPzis surprised Singaporeans with the apparent rehabilitation of Devan Nair by naming an NTUC training centre after him, the Devan Nair Institute. I believe that they did it to court the Indian vote. The PAPzis regained Potong Pasir but lost a GRC.

This time round, the PAPzis are after the Malay vote with the same naming game. They will be naming a mosque and ISEAS after our first president, Yusof Ishak. Will they succeed this time? Or will the PAPzis lose more GRCs?

Given that Malays make up around 13% of the electorate, how their vote divides will probably tip the balance electorally.

The honouring of Yusof Ishak and the referencing of the achievements of that employee of Keppel Corp, who is a Col (NS), are important but will probably not be deterministic of any electoral outcome. More significant, however, is the fact that Malays are disproportionately employed in govt departments, stat boards, GLCs, and other quasi-govt agencies. It is a simple "rice bowl" issue. Many people will sill still vote for, instead of against, their rice bowl.

most malays, especially those work in civil service, stat boards and GLC vote to pap anyway. Most of the lowly educated or no money malays don't give a shit for yusof, they more concern in money in their hands. as long pap give free $$ to them, they will continue to vote for pap.
