Of all of Singapore's Finance Minister, only Tharman began his career in finance and economics and followed this path until he was identified for politics and absorbed into the. Admin scheme. Even GOh Keng Swee was more into social economics before entering politics.

Under Tharman, we had the following for a. Singaporean family

- depressed wages
- job insecurity
- unaffordable public housing for young families
- inflation in basic needs
- average wage earners no longer able to have overseas holidays
- no idea what the economic future holds for born and bred Singaporean

Under Tharman, foreigners had the following
- free and unbridled access to labour market at every level from cleaners to CEOs
- affordable or fee free regime to arrive and get jobs or setup companies that can employ all foreigners
- high end investors given PR when they purchase high end properties
- one his minister's husband had the great privilege of running a fund that gave PR visas
- access to public housing

Would Goh Keng Swee allow any of these to fester to catch hold.

What about Lee Hsien Loong? Was he better?

When foreigners are allowed to run wild in the country like monkeys, beating up taxi drivers, motorcyclists, burning police cars, insulting locals, committing crimes etc, as if the country does not have an effective Govt, the whole batch of the leadership is just junk.

It would be more correct for the thread to be called "LHL - worst PM." and everything will fall into place.

Policies that affect the economy including property prices comes within the purview of MOF. If they think the market is overheated, they will direct MND to do the needful.

Screw Ball. high public housing was due to low supply of new HDB flat during Mabaro Tan years..

They also did not cater to the increase in demand, i.e the new FTs..

Tharman is Lee Hsien Loong's obedient boy, that was why Richard Hu was removed.

Now, it is Tharman, Shamu and Vivian that run the show. LHL is just their puppet. That's why we are flooded with Ah Nehs and we have a lop-sided free trade agreement with India.

does it have anything to do with the slapping incident?

In 1990, an incident occurred in a pre-cabinet meeting which was the beginning of entrenching further among the many in the core executive, resistance to Lee Hsien Loong’s long term ambitions for prime ministership. Prior to this meeting Lee Hsien Loong had gone to the office of Richard Hu, the Minister of Finance, and removed a number of files without Hu’s permission. At that time Lee’s office was on the 48th floor of what is now Temasek Tower and Hu’s was on the 50th floor.

At the pre-cabinet meeting Hu took Lee to task for doing this and was supported by Tony Tan. Lee’s response was aggressive and insulting, he directly insulted Tan and Hu, a man of his father’s age. This was a double insult to Hu, who was Lee’s superior in cabinet and a person of an age who should of itself deserve respect in Chinese society. Suppiah Dhanabalan intervened and chastised Lee for his behaviour, demanding that he apologise to Hu, withdraw his remarks and not interfere in other minister’s portfolios. A heated exchange occurred into which a number of other issues intruded and eventually Lee lost his temper, and reportedly reached across the table and slapped Dhanabalan across the face.

The private property market has direct impact on the public sector. When private sector takes off it pulls the public sector along. More importantly the MOF has the responsibility to control the economy. He needs to control all sectors that influences the economy. Its an important position, second only to the PM.

MBT screwed on many facets such as supply management, eligibility of applicant, failure to enforce illegal rentals (which reduces supply) etc.

the line between the private sector and public sector has blurred, now the ministry of environment, ministry of manpower,Land Transport authority,Housing development board can be considered as for profit organisations.

Why you think the post is so important. It was the first Ministry to have 2 Perm Sec will clear lines of responsibilities and they were there from the 70s.

Monetary / Fiscal Policy Failure - this one is real easy - driving demand and keeping the GDP growth targets intact by allowing the foreigners to come in. When you increase population, you your economy will grow as demand shoots up. Supply cannot keep up and prices rise. Owners of private properties especially rentals will laugh all the way to the bank. Businessmen boom time as they increase price to handle the demand without adding more costs. But the rest of country suffers.

Why did you think they increased the population so much and proposed to increase even more - it cannot be because we got so much space like Australia and Canada to exploit. It was not because they wanted to help the Pinoys and Indians and reduce poverty in their home country.
