It is far more likely that they contracted the illness from butchering and eating primates (part of their diet.) The cautionary tale here is that we should not eat anything that is genetically too close to us, because that often means that diseases (esp viral ones) can jump the species barrier a lot easier.
If they are vegetarian, there will not be such a problem.
