Good idea, but think about issues: MPs

eatery.jpg

The owner of Nasi Lemak Kukus, Mr Lester Ching, intends to let people who need shelter stay over at his shop. He wants to provide food and accomodation for them and he is even thinking of hiring them as night watch. Mr Ching (the man in yellow) is posing with his staff. According to him, everyone there is just like a cohesive family.

What Mr Lester Ching is doing is noble, but those wanting to help others must consider some things, say MPs contacted by The New Paper.

Ms Tin Pei Ling, MP for Marine Parade GRC, said: "Conceptually speaking, this is a noble idea.

"By doing this, he is encouraging the person to be self-reliant by providing enough support for him to get back on his feet again."

She pointed out some practical considerations: "There must be inherent trust because they are living with people whom they don't know very well. The person moving in might also have adjustment issues. All these need to be ironed out."

Ms Tin commended Mr Ching's intention of providing disadvantaged people with employment as this form of long-term support is valuable.

Mr Zainal Sapari, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, said: "Personally, I would encourage any act of kindness, but the person who initiates this needs to be very careful.

"If he is able to open up the eatery to people who need a place to stay without contravening any building regulations, then it would be a win-win situation and we should encourage it."

He gave examples of people he encountered at Meet-the-People sessions who have difficulties finding accommodation, and have baggage, such as loan shark or family problems.

"So he needs to be aware of expectations and there should be a way that both parties can separate amicably should things fail to work out," Mr Zainal said.

Mr Zaqy Mohamad, MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC, said: "He has a good heart and the compassion to help the less fortunate.

"It provides an outlet for people who are not able to get state welfare because of one reason or another. It is complementing what the state provides for low-income families and those who are truly in need."

He suggested that Mr Ching work closely with family service centres near him so that they can also provide the necessary help.

Instead of finding ways to help this good samaritan, these PAP MPs are pouring cold water. Why? Because his actions show how government is failing the poor!

What they say is true.

If they can't get on their own two feet, how many more can you help?

You will be dead broke!! And they keep asking for help!

Laziness is not a good label to be attached with!

We don't want to breed a culture of idolatry and entitlement.

It is a disgrace to continuously accept welfare. Your self esteem will definitely hit bottom.

Stand on your own two feet makes your life meaningful and purposeful.

I suspect Mr Ching wants free publicity and cheap labour.

His Nasi Lemak taste ok but not that great.. The prices for the food there are also reasonable on par with the ones at Changi Village, Adam Rd.. I don't think he needs the free publicity.. His shop is well known around that part of Thomson Rd due to the many Caldecott actors and actresses having meals there..

Its some sort of a hip Nasi Lemak outlet where the crowd made of mostly Yuppies.. The Makcik working there is some sort of a mini celebrity.. Most local celebrities would take pics with her when visiting the shop..

One thing that make this shop edge other Nasi Lemak shops is the extraordinaire friendliness of the shop owner towards his customers.. Doesn't matter if you are a celebrity or not, the owner if he's around would make a small chat with most of his customers even if he's busy doing some things in his shop..

I have been visiting this Nasi Lemak shop for some time.. I need to debunk some allegations that the owner is starved of publicity to make his shop famous.. He doesn't need to do that.. As I said, his shop is already famous due to the many celebrities from Channel 8, Channel 5, Suria artists having their Nasi Lemak there..

Ask his staff past and present.. Almost all of them are our Malay Makciks and Abangs.. They only have nice things to say about their Boss Mr Ching..

In fact I dare say Mr Ching is one of those rare breeds of businessmen who cares genuinely for his employees and his customers.. I have yet to see any restaurant owners in Spore being so friendly and appreciative towards his customers whether they are famous or not.. Not promoting his shop, but his shop employs only S'poreans as compared to other food outlets.. For that I support his entrepreneurial spirit..

He runs a nasi lemak shop, don't think he really needs a night watch le, hehehe......................

From young my parent and teachers told me this "Nothing in this world is free"
BTW you could be right, since he is willing to give people free food and lodging, he should not need a night watcher, anyone should be able to come in freely to his shop LOL

well im not surprised his shop is mainly ah bangs and makciks, malays are widely known as the most economically and educationally disadvantaged group in singapore and highly dependent on government housing and welfare support to take care of their numerous offsprings....im not surprised he has a soft spot for them.

The MPs are probably upset that the owner did not go thru them so that these MPs can milked it to their advantage. Opportunity wasted, and this one will not even cost them 1 cent. It is getting difficult to find such opportunities.

Istana and oxley should open up to provide accommodation and food to those who are needy. This will teach the jiak liao bees to be humane too.

He said he thinking to hire them as night watch le.

Most likely he tries to encourage those helpless people to be proud of having duties and responsibilities.
Much difference in our leader(s) shifting responsibility to lowly supervisor and staff when things went wrong.

In fact there were and are countless numbers of selfless people working for unfortunate people in this world.
Only the media and politicians expose those people and take advantage on it.
