</header>Washington Post, one of the last bastions of great American journalism, has written an article, “All 274 gifts given to Barack Obama between 2009 and 2012, ranked“.

Singapore was declared one of the worst gift-givers between the years 2009 and 2012. But we still did better than Russia.

Singapore apparently has a knack for giving Creative gifts: “Creative” as in the company started by Sim Wong Hoo. Like the device pictured above, the Creative ZEN X-Fi 2 64GB MP3 player, given as a gift in 2010.

This earned a rebuke from WP, as “This was three years after the iPhone came out”. In other words, MP3 players have already become obsolete. And Singapore had the audacity to give the American President an MP3 player whose country gave the rest of the world Apple.

From Washington Post:
185. Singapore, 2009:
16″ × 23.75″ metal panel with cityscape view of Singapore, presented in a wooden box with a plaque on the top that reads “APEC Singapore 2009.” 9.5″ × 6.75″ × 2.75″ bronze abstract sculpture in a braided motif inscribed, “From the 2009 APEC Conference in Singapore,” presented in a fitted wooden presentation box.

267. Singapore, 2010:
Creative Aurvana Live! black headphones. Creative pocket video camera. Creative noise cancelling earbud headphones.

272. Singapore, 2010:
Creative ZEN X-Fi 2 64GB MP3 player and earphones. OSIM uGoGo electronic pulse massager.

The good news is that we did better than Russia, who gave a CD holder and some CDs in 2009.

But Singapore was probably being a smartass about it. The gifts are never meant to be handed over to the President personally and never ever improved diplomacy.

You can read the article here and find out what other countries gave, for example, Malaysia, who gave an ornate pewter jewelry box with velvet interior, presented in a blue velvet box in 2011.

Here Are President Obama's Best and Worst Gifts, Ranked

In honor of the president's birthday today, Washington Post staffers took it upon themselves to rank every gift bestowed upon the big man by foreign nations and their leaders between 2009 and 2012. Factors taken into consideration included value and quality.

So what to get the man who has everything? According to lists compiled by the State Department's not-at-all-fictitious Protocol Gift Unit, nations have presented everything from high-end bottles of booze (Mexico) and a ping-pong table (the UK) to framed portraits of royal family members (Denmark) and a wooden CD holder (way to go, Russia). Among the sea of generic vases, rugs, and tea sets, Mexico's silver aztec calendar and New Zealand's Maori clubtook top honors. In dead last? Could be worse. Singapore could have given Obama a framed portrait of Ho Ching to hang in the white House. Secret service agents might have to shoot the portrait to prevent obama from throwing up after seeing it.

Singapore should send him a packet of our world famous char kwey teow. After he savours it, he will become addicted to Singapore cuisine and will visit Singapore often and spend his money here. And while he is in Peesai, he can even go to the different locations to try the different char kwey teow from the local masters.

Cheers!

Why don't send mee siam mai hum instead? after all, Pinkie's fav food. As long as singapore don't send one smelly D24 durian as present to Obama. He takes one sniff and will declare war.

I will betcha that they rated the gifts from UK and Israel as top of the list

That being said, this article makes me feel like I am back in the middle or dark ages where you have to give gifts to make the emperor happy.

That is too generous a gift to give to the worst ever president of the USA who is probably going to jail for life for treason.

Problem - where to find Pinky's favorite food? No one person I've come across in the F&B line knows where to get this version of mee siam. Must be available at Pinky's home only. Not at all a descriptive dish of Singaporeans. Chicken rice or laksa maybe, but char kwey teow is the Singaporean dish. You are right about durian - very risky if offered to westerners, only a handful migh take a liking to it, most swear it smells like from the sewers. Better not to offend the most powerful man in the world.

Cheers!
