I just don’t understand the need to employ foreign cabin crew. Do please give our local gals a chance. There are many local gals who aspire to fly high. Just grind them through tough language training and push them to pass the language test, I am sure these true blue Singapore gals will be as good as their foreign counterparts.

Balmain iconic uniform of the Singapore Airlines still fits better on our local gals. Just imagine how many locals gals are eliminated through rounds interview and how many foreign cabin crew they are taking in?

Foreign crew better off with SIA

If you are a foreigner, you will be better off working for Singapore Airlines than some companies in Singapore. I won’t be talking about pilots, managers, admin staff, engineers etc who are foreigners. I am talking about Cabin crew from China, India, Malaysia etc who are being paid the same salary as their Singaporean colleagues.

Before I get started, I want to make it clear that my former employer reaches out to the foreign cabin crew wannabes not because of cost cutting measure nor to exploit the abundance of cheap labour in places like China, India, Indonesia etc. It has more to do with the shortage of suitable of people in Singapore to do the job.

To prove my point, SIA pays the same salary to all foreign cabin crew and not a cent less than their Singapore colleagues. In fact, SIA pays more for the Japanese and Korean stewardess (S$600 more in basic salary plus a monthly housing allowance of $700 and a 6 month summer & winter bonus).

The average take home pay for a cabin crew is about S$4,000 per month. Convert it to Malaysian Ringgit at 2.5x a Malaysian crew earns MYR10,000 per month. The Malaysian crew is better of than his or her country political secretary who salary is MYR 5,700 per month. The prime minister is paid MYR 22,800.

A PRC (China) stewardess working for SIA is paid 20,000 CNY. The PRC president is paid 5,500 CNY per month which is about 28% of a stewardess monthly salary. The rate of exchange is about 5 CNY to S$1….. for currency exchange click here.

An Indian stewardess with SIA is paid about 180,000 INR a month whereas her prime minister is paid 18,600 INR (10.4 % of the stewardess’s pay)… click here for salaries of world leaders.
The Indonesian stewardess is paid half of her president monthly salary.

In fact SQ was in the forefront of FTs displacing locals. Could it be our girls were not cut out for the rigors of service ? In any case I think they went too far. Foreign crew will never have that same pride as Singaporeans flying their national flag (almost literally). The experience of flying SQ gradually degraded to plain ordinary at premium prices.

Just one exception on FT. I fully support having Japanese crew. They can teach our locals a lot .i..e if they are open to learning. As for Koreans, not so much.

Come on lets be fair, SQ is not replacing locals with FTs. Every airline employ FTs for specific routes according to nationalities. Needless to say this is good service to have people of the same nationality, speaking the same language and having the same culture to serve and deal with incidents.

SQ is doing the right thing to pay equally and I think this should be the right policy in hiring FTs unlike other companies and sectors depressing local salary by hiring FTs. Everyone deserve to be treated equaly and to betreated equally works on both sides FTs and local.

met an sq stewardess who is korean on the route from inchon to sg, and she's excellent. she wears the green kebaya and carries a special badge on her left boob. she speaks korean, mandarin and english. she says training is rigid and tough, and serving passengers on board is a relief. when it comes to meal times, she is seen serving vegan meals to ah neh first, then the regular chicken or beef trays to other passengers. she says that since there are more ah neh passengers flying the routes from u.s. to sg to india and vice versa, the notion of serving vegan meals to ah neh first is becoming moot as they are now the majority on board. and sq flights easily run out of vegan meals before being able to cater to all ah neh's. she says that most likely ah neh passengers don't fill in online vegan meal request before embarkation. they wrongly assume sq will have sufficient vegan meals on every flight, a recurring theme among all neh's in every cuntry they travel to. they ASSume the rest of world is vegan just because they live most of their lives in india. you see? how observant, intuitive and intelligent she is! sinkie stewardesses will have no time and brain power to look at the bigger picture like she does. moreover, she does not speak with a sinkie accent. i'm 100% for more international stewardesses. :biggrin:

This used to be standard practise to have at least 1 native speaker on board.
But now the report is dealing with massive influx of hiring FTs like ATBs and ah nehs to replace sinkies....I doubt they put these 2 groups of FTs to fly strictly Prc and India routes only.
SIA supposed to have unions that are the best of the worst....so union also suck thumb?

If it's like this to replace locals then I will not support. Anyway unions? We have NTUC lor. Sinkies lan lan la come to union.

In other national airlines the make up of the cabin crew is usually representative of the citizens of their country.

SIA is a GLC & receiving $$$$ from the taxpayers of Spore. Why should Sporeans support a national airline which favors foreigners :confused:

Isn't it the same problem we are now facing in Spore where jobs are going to foreigners even though there are qualified locals :confused:

Well according to their Hindu history they've already invented spacecrafts tens of thousands of years ago surely everyone should be vegans like them.

Encountered a major delay in Shanghai's old Hong Qiao airport airline distributing simple packet meal with rice ham egg vege, an ahneh brought food to worker asked for vegetarian PRC worker couldn't work out his Indian English I did not bother to help cos there's only one type of meal and that's it.

Taliing about out vegans ice heard a lot that when a person switch to vegetarian meals as in lots of vegetables the body odor will be less and in fact body smells better. My own personal experience from juicing is the same. What happened to Indians? People say Indians Smells like shit due to eating sheep and goats but they still smell so shitty.

Honestly speaking, this is one area where I will justify the employment of FTs. Sinkies girls can't speak or socialise well enough and when you are trapped in a confined area a few thousands metres above air, the last thing you would want to see is this.........

The paps love to give jobs to foreigners and SIA merely follows suit. Sinapor is helping other countries to ease unemployment by giving jobs in the country to tiongs, pinoys, ah nehs, ang mohs, etc. No jobs for sinkies? It is your own business, you die also your business.

Besides the need for native speakers, part of the reason is the high rate of MC thrown in for certain sectors particularly India and China. Local cabin crew cannot tolerate the behaviours of some of the passengers. I am sure if salary is not a factor, it will be locals.
