they want enemy to target squarely on the chest and not the arm....like putting a signboard on ur chest that says shoot me im brigadier general.
The rank display changed a few years ago, along with the switch to the new pixellated SAF uniforms.
Now corporals and sergeants also put their rank on the front like the officers. That's a good thing, no need for stupid sewing and velcro.
