For the sake of our health, It's time to ban Palm Oil in Singapore. Better to use Olive oil, soy bean oil, rice bran oil or even peanut oil.

Other than lower saturated fats consumed, we will giving the The Indon Oil Palm plantations a black eye..... and stop the destruction of forests at the same time when they stop cultivating this plant in view of lowered demand...

According to studies reported on by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), excessive intake of palmitic acid, which makes up 44 percent of palm oil, increases blood cholesterol levels and may contribute to heart disease.

Several studies have linked palm oil and cardiovascular disease including a 2005 study conducted in Costa Rica which indicated that replacing palm oil in cooking with polyunsaturated non hydrogenated oils could reduce the risk of heart attacks, and a 2011 analysis of 23 countries which showed that for each kilogram of palm oil added to the diet annually there was an increase in ischemic heart disease deaths though the increase was much smaller in high-income countries.

All our hawkers use cheap palm oil..... worse is .... they use the hydrogenated form..... best way to die of heart disease...

Trans-fatty acids (trans-fat) cause serious health issues, much worse than saturated fatty acids (saturated fat). That’s why despite their culinary and economical allure, in the past few years oils with trans-fats are being used in less Western products.

Unfortunately, most of our Hawker food still contain partially hydrogenated oils....

What to do at the supermarket:

Avoid products with partially hydrogenated oils, because of the trans fat. Limit products with high saturated fat values, whether naturally occurring, or through full hydrogenation.

Palm trees have been grown in Malaysia long before any haze had occurred.

Don't bash palm oil just because the pappies and their beloved Indon business crooks (Wilmar) decide to use unscrupulous means to maximize profits for their agricultural investments.

By the way, the healthiest cooking oils are coconut oil and olive oil. Soy, sunflower seed, canola and corn oils are in fact much more harmful than palm oil. Do your research and you'll find the truth.

But you gotta love the power of marketing... you can witness this in parents spending a fortune to buy chemically 'fortified' milk powders for their kids... in the hopes that they could be raising a future Einstein and bring pride to the family.

No. Olive oil is cold pressed and therefore good, esp if used without heating or shallow frying.

Rice bran oil is extracted using solvents and it is not on my healthy list.

The oil extracted from rice bran goes rancid quickly once pressed.

To refine it, a solvent is used to extract the oil from the germ which is later evaporated off (and tested post-production for residual solvents to double check for traces).

That's followed by neutralisation, bleaching, winterisation and de-odourisation steps, as with most other oils. the rice bran oil is subjected to high temperatures during the extraction phase prior to the filtration. This creates refined and stabilized oil, bringing about a long shelf life and high smoke point. However, what you lose is the "naturalness" of the oil.

I agree with your call, but it is somewhat too late. Almost everything that we eat, snack on, use (soaps, shampoos) use palm oil to some degree, from restaurants to food courts, to food factories. In supermarkets, evertyhing that says "Vegetable Oil" is made up of palm oil. And it is not just little Peesai, it is the whole world. Malaysia is already processing it for biodiesel use and if I am not mistaken, it has become the largest cash crop in Malaysia and Indonesia, and is still growing. Some African countries plan to go into this big scale too. Its cultivation, together with other commercial activities has destroyed large tracts of forests and many species, most notably our relative, the Orang Utan has had their homes destroyed. There have been many calls by various organizations protesting againts this and calling for boycott of Palm Oil products, but it is not working. More land is still being cleared for more plantations. It really sucks that most people don't bother, despite their "education."

Cheers!

Found this on the net:

A natural component of rice bran oil lowers cholesterol, and ongoing research also shows it may have potential as an anti-cancer and anti-infection agent in humans, according to a University of Rochester scientist who has studied the antioxidant since 1996.

Tocotrienols (TRF) have high antioxidant properties and are becoming more noteworthy in scientific research. TRF is derived from barley, oats, palm and rice bran. The best form of TRF comes from rice bran oil, which is contained in the outer grain hull of rice. Its properties inhibit the activity of HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol biosynthesis.

Long-term use of tocotrienols might reduce overall cancer risk, according to published research last year in the European Journal of Cancer. These natural antioxidants help fight free radicals, a major cause of uncontrolled cancer growth

Oryzanol is effective in lowering cholesterol levels in the blood, reducing liver cholesterol synthesis and treating menopausal disorders.

Phytosterols are nutrients with many health benefits and are more abundant in Rice Bran Oil than any other oil. Scientific research suggest that Phytosterols reduce cholesterol, provide anti-inflammatory effects, inhibit the growth of cancer cells, improve the immune system and have other health benefits.
