(Please turn on "captions" for the English subtitles.)

Fortunately however, there is still hope for change and improvement brought about by an awakening among citizens.
And this is growing in strength.
We may not be able to change the world but we have the power and the ability to change our lives in Singapore.

[Text of video in English]:

Peace be unto you.

How time flies. The world marches on towards becoming more sophisticated as ever. Consistent with this development we have also changed our way of living our lives. This include the way we celebrate our festivals, especially Hari Raya Idul Fitri.

Not withstanding that, we must continue to preserve the traditions and appreciate the real meaning behind the Hari Raya celebrations. They include the practice of making house visits and seeking forgiveness for our past mistakes and wrong doings so as to strengthen our ties and kinship.

The practice of having open houses, which are not restricted to only guests from the same race and religion, must be continued so as to strengthen our multi racial and multi religious fabric with the ultimate aim of building a united nation. This forms the basis and objective of the SDP.

We are also the only political party that has published a policy paper specifically addressing the problems facing the Malay Muslim community.

At the same time we are also conscious of the the difficulties faced by some among us in coping with the high cost of living due to policies which are ill thought of and implemented by the present government.

The continued influx of foreign labour and the refusal to introduce a minimum wage policy as proposed by us has made life more difficult for a large number of citizens, especially those in the lower wage bracket, the majority of whom happens to be Malays.

In the mean time worries over the ever changing CPF policy, the high cost of health care as well as housing will not subside due to the refusal of the government to accept constructive proposals from the SDP.

Fortunately however, there is still hope for change and improvement brought about by an awakening among citizens. And this is growing in strength. We may not be able to solve the problems of the world but we do have the power and the ability to change and improve our lives in Singapore if we defend our rights as citizens and speak up.

We are confident of our ability to make a positive contribution towards the new era that will soon emerge, for the betterment of our citizens as a whole.

On behalf of the SDP leadership and members I wish you Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri and seek your forgiveness.
