Dear TRS,
I have a friend who is working in Optus, one of Australia's biggest Telcos which is fully owned by Singapore's SingTel.

She shared with me that many of her colleagues and people working in Optus are being sent to work for SingTel in Singapore.

What worries me is why is SingTel sourcing staff from Optus Australia and not hiring Singaporeans for the jobs in Singapore?

Since the salaries are high in Australia, it doesn't make sense to assume that these FTs are "cheaper" than locals. I am sure they are getting attractive pay packages otherwise why would the Australians move to Singapore?

From what my friend understands, it's actually got a little bit to do with the Australian labour laws that protect their workers.

Optus is not doing too well and they had been downsizing their staff since last year.

But because of Australian labour laws, it's hard for the company to just fire lots of staff.

So, to get around this, SingTel-Optus just moved their staff to Singapore because SingTel was doing well.

In the end, it seems that Singaporeans are losing out because of SingTel's failed investments overseas. SingTel is the one balancing the books for Optus to keep Optus doing well and absorbing their workers.

Since SingTel enjoys a huge section of the market here, they are able to make big profits at the expense of Singaporeans and on top of Singaporeans paying high prices, it seems that even more of our potential jobs are going to FTs that get paid just as well, if not better, than locals would!

Why do Singaporeans need to get dragged down thanks to SingTel's failing investments overseas?

Complain so much for what? Well known that Pappies only good at sucking blood of sinkies and scared of everyone else. How much money have they lost overseas? That's the kind of world first talents we paid for, only can make money in sinkieland but not out of this small red dot. Everyone's been conned by the old devil to make this land his dynasty and all sinkies his personal slaves.

Optus has been going down hill here for a very very long time now. I always wondered how did they manage to be still around.

I have two words for you: minimum sum.

After all, it isn't necessarily a bad thing if you lose a lot of money if it can be easily replenished. It's like having an unlimited supply of gambling chips at a casino.

This has been going on for a long time.

Its usual during downsizing in a S'pore company for the Singaporean/Singapore based staff to get the worst package as there is simply no protection for the Singaporean/Singapore based staff at all.

" Under the Employment Act, an employee who has been employed in a company for at least three years can request for retrenchment
benefits if he/she is retrenched.
As the law does not stipulate the quantum to be paid, the amount is subject to negotiation between the employee and employer. The
quantum will also depend on the company's financial position.
An employee who has worked less than three years in a company is not entitled to retrenchment benefits under the Employment Act.
However, the company may pay an ex-gratia payment at its discretion."
See more at: http://www.mom.gov.sg/employment-pr...hment/Pages/default.aspx#sthash.Ex8apkSM.dpuf

In other countries, the minimum retrenchment benefits are often stipulated in the law and unions play an important role in fighting for more or prevent unnecessary retrenchment while NTUC is busy 'symbiotising " with the PAP .
Anyway the 42% (60%-18% not staying in HDB) are simply too dumb, bogged down by work, or cowardly to do anything.
