Residents in Dakota Crescent have been told to move out by the end of 2016 as their homes are being demolished and redeveloped. In total, about 400 households are affected.
Many of the residents have lived there since the blocks were first built in the 1950s but they were told on Wednesday that they would soon need to move out.
The area has been marked for redevelopment of taller residential complexes.
While a number of residents saw the move coming given the age of the flats there, many are still saddened by the fact that they have to move away from their long-time homes.
A lot of the blocks along Dakota Crescent are only 3 storeys high and are part of Singapore's history. All of the flats are rental flats and the government is also going to help the residents with a $15,000 relocation grant if they have never owned a home before.
On top of this, there is also the Additional and Special CPF Housing Grants but as many of the residents here are retirees with little savings, it is unlikely that they will have the money or income to buy a new flat.
HDB explained that over 2/3rds of the households affected have elderly residents. These elderly residents are unlikely to take on new debts to buy a house.
Those who cannot afford to buy a new flat, can choose to relocate to other rental flats in Cassia Crescent nearby and will have priority in 1-room and 2-room rentals in other estates.
To help them if they choose to rent, the government will also subsidise them $1000 in removal allowance to help them with their relocation.
MP for the area, Lim Biow Chuan (Mountbatten) explained that the relocation was good as the blocks were extremely old and there were many maintenance problems occurring.
MR Lim explained that relocation is always inconvenient but in the long term, the move is for the better for the residents as the flats are really quite old.
Dakota Crescent is just off Old Airport Road and most of the low-rise blocks have been unchanged since they were built in the 50s.
