World Cup winner turns down quadruple wages to stay at the club - and the woman - he loves

By Eurosport 1 October 2014 12:33 Early Doors

tumblr_muymgso7nf1sqfd86o5_500.jpg

Manchester United's hopes of landing Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels have been hit after the Germany international said he is happy at the Bundesliga club and his family life in Germany.

United are desperate for defensive reinforcements and manager Louis van Gaal is thought to be interested in the centre-back, with a view to a move in January.

But the Daily Mail reports that the World Cup winner thinks he earns enough cash where he is, loves his life in Dortmund with his girlfriend Cathy and wider family, and is not tempted by a big-money move to Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old told Bundesliga Magazine International: "We earn enough here...I believe that's enough for me."

How refreshing. One of the world's best players not interested in money. Well, more money than the rather adequate amount he is already on - but even still, it's a genuine rarity to see a player so in love with his current club and family life that he won't be tempted away by the prospect of quadrupling his wages.

And that is what we're talking about, incidentally: Hummels is on £40,000 a week, way less than the average Old Trafford bench warmer.

Early Doors had a quick straw poll in the office. Would we move to a new job for the sake of a quadrupled salary? At first, everybody said "yes", no matter what the new job involved.

But then you start to think about it. What if that job was on the other side of the continent, away from all your friends and family? Leaving behind everything you've ever known and loved? It all sounds great for the young in search of adventure, but the older and more settled you are, the less likely it is that money alone will compensate for upending your life.

When you consider that Hummels is already at a great club with legendary fans and a great life on £2 million a year, it's all the more understandable that he'd stay put.

Somehow, though, it's still a shock when a player reveals that they are not a mere mercenary, but a rounded human being with a very solid sense of self.

He's not the first to feel this way, of course. Matt Le Tissier turned down a move from Southampton to Tottenham because he said he "enjoyed being a big fish in a medium-sized pond", and Steven Gerrard did a famous U-turn on a move to Chelsea in 2005.

Of late, however, Dortmund players haven't usually put such a value on thier lifestyle. Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze have both taken big money offers at arch-rivals Bayern Munich (Hummels' former club) in the last few years. But Hummels, the star with the underwear model good looks, seems determined not to join the exodus.

Van Gaal must be tearing his hair out about the fact that his club have the theoretical financial clout to land anyone, yet somehow seem doomed not to finalise deals for players they really need. Hummels is just the latest in a long line of players to say no: Bayern Munich trio Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben and Thomas Mueller were all summer targets but refused to move despite United's wealth.

Champions League football next season may, of course, help persuade these reluctant targets - though the way things are going even a Europa League spot looks far from guaranteed.

Bundesliga Preview: Hamburg´s task gets no easier, Bayern battle Hannover

1 October 2014

670845header.jpg

Josef Zinnbauer's task as new Hamburg boss does not get any easier when he takes the rock-bottom side to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Zinnbauer – the club's former under-23 coach – replaced Mirko Slomka in the top job at Hamburg last month.

And while Zinnbauer's arrival coincided with a goalless draw against two-time defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, a loss at the second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach was followed by a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt last week.

Hamburg – who beat second-tier Greuther Furth on away goals in last term's relegation play-off – dominated for much of their home clash against Frankfurt, only to lose to Lucas Piazon's stunning stoppage-time free-kick.

And a trip to Dortmund, who have finished in the top two for the last four years, means Zinnbauer's men will have to be at their best to claim their first win of the season.

Hamburg director Dietmar Beiersdorfer is convinced, that in Zinnbauer, that the club have the right man for the job.

"Joe is doing a very good job and is very emotionally involved," Biersdorfer told Hamburg's official website.

"You can see that something is stirring. He sends a team out after talking a lot of sense to them.

"The situation is difficult...we are in bottom place. Now everyone at the club and inside that dressing room must invest even more effort."

Hamburg will take heart from Dortmund's patchy recent form, which has seen them fail to win any of their last three league matches.

A 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Schalke last week saw them drop to 12th – a position that is unlikely to last for long.

Hannover's bright start to the season has faded somewhat, with two losses in their last three, and they head to Munich to face a Bayern side who have hammered them in recent times.

Bayern have won the last six clashes between the two sides, scoring 23 goals in the process, while they have netted four or more against Hannover on six occasions since 2009.

Leaders Bayern are two points ahead of Monchengladbach, who host the fourth-placed Mainz on Sunday in a meeting between two of the four remaining unbeaten sides.

At the other end of the table, just one point ahead of Hamburg are Werder Bremen, who take on fellow strugglers Freiburg.

Stuttgart won for the first time last week and battle Hertha Berlin on Friday, while Cologne will aim to end a winless run of four against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen meet Paderborn, Hoffenheim face Schalke and Wolfsburg take on Augsburg.

Hertha Berlin 3 Stuttgart 2: Kalou at the double for capital club

3 October 2014

674177header.jpg

Salomon Kalou netted a goal in each half as Hertha Berlin overcame fellow early season strugglers Stuttgart 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Moritz Leitner handed Stuttgart a fifth-minute lead before Kalou levelled from the penalty spot midway through the opening period.

Stuttgart were twice made to pay for losing possession in midfield after half-time, with Kalou and Roy Beerens the beneficiaries before Hertha substitute Sandro Wagner headed into his own net to unwittingly set up a tense finish.

Huub Stevens' Stuttgart broke their Bundesliga duck with a 1-0 win over Hannover last time out and they picked up where they left off when Vedad Ibisevic flicked Florian Klein's cross towards the onrushing Leitner to finish.

Hertha had the chance to level when Carlos Gruezo bundled full debutant Valentin Stocker to the ground inside the box and Kalou made no mistake from 12 yards.

Thorsten Kirschbaum made a fine save from Beerens on the volley to ensure the sides went in at the break all square.

Timo Werner, on as a first-half replacement for Gruezo, passed up a glorious chance to give Stuttgart a 50th-minute lead and it was a wasteful moment they would regret.

The visitors gave up possession through Antonio Rudiger in the 63rd minute, prompting Stocker to burst forward a feed Kalou.

The former Chelsea man benefitted from a fortunate ricochet when he entered the box but fired home in assured fashion.

A similarly clinical attack followed 11 minutes later, with Stocker involved once more before Anis Ben-Hatira crossed for Beerens to volley his first Bundesliga goal.

Wagner replaced goal hero Kalou and offered an unfortunate imitation when he nodded Moritz Leitner's free-kick through his own goal, but the hosts held on to sweeten the capital's Unity Day celebrations.

Bundesliga Review: Hamburg stun Dortmund, Bayern hammer Hannover

5 October 2014

675241header.jpg

Hamburg claimed their first Bundesliga win of the season to extend Borussia Dortmund's miserable form slump on Saturday.

At the seventh time of asking, Hamburg finally picked up three points thanks to a 1-0 victory at Signal Iduna Park to haul themselves off the foot of the table.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga netted the only goal of the game in the 35th minute, steering home after Nicolai Muller latched on to Adrian Ramos' wayward pass and slid the ball into the area.

Dortmund piled the pressure on as the match progressed, with Ramos going close twice in the second half, but Josef Zinnbauer's men held on to clinch a priceless victory, leaving Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund on the end of a third league defeat from four.

Champions Bayern Munich had no such difficulties, though, as they easily dispatched Hannover 4-0 at the Allianz Arena to go four points clear at the top.

Robert Lewandowski netted Bayern's quickest goal of the campaign so far after six minutes following Rafinha's fine long pass and Arjen Robben doubled their lead with an excellent individual effort soon after.

Lewandowski added a third towards the end of a dominant first half, poking home after receiving Xherdan Shaqiri's excellent pass and Robben rounded off a resounding victory 11 minutes from time with a well-taken finish.

Schalke's Bundesliga momentum ended following a three-game unbeaten streak as they were defeated 2-1 at Hoffenheim, who themselves moved up to second.

Roberto Firmino's fine form continued as he claimed assists for each of Hoffenheim's goals, first squaring to Tarik Elyounoussi for an easy finish, before slipping Adam Szalai through for a one-on-one.

The Brazilian now has 25 goals and 19 assists in his last 46 competitive games for Hoffenheim, who held on for a slender win despite Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulling one back late on.

Bayer Leverkusen lost further ground on leaders Bayern as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to 10-man Bundesliga newcomers Paderborn, who had Marvin Bakalorz sent off 18 minutes from the end.

After Lars Bender cancelled out Suleyman Koc's initial opener, Moritz Stoppelkamp appeared to have given Paderborn the win three minutes from time

Karim Bellarabi, though, netted a dramatic late equaliser in the 90th minute, keeping Roger Schmidt's side in the top four.

Eintracht Frankfurt edged a five-goal thriller with Cologne, winning 3-2 in front of their own supporters thanks to Kevin Wimmer's 79th-minute own-goal, while Werder Bremen are bottom following their 1-1 draw at home to fellow strugglers Freiburg.

Klopp hopeful on trio

5 October 2014

675629header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp is expecting a triple injury boost after the international break.

Dortmund have endured a difficult spell in the Bundesliga with the club failing to win in their last four league matches, including Saturday's meek 1-0 defeat to Hamburg.

Part of Dortmund's problems this campaign have been due to a lengthy injury list

However, three key players are set to step up training during the break for the next round of international matches.

Ilkay Gundogan is one of those trio, the midfielder has not played a competitive match in over 12 months due to a back injury, while Marco Reus (ankle) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (foot) are also on the comeback trail.

"He [Gundogan] will be available after the international break as a squad member," Klopp said. "Reus will return to normal training promptly.

"Mkhitaryan will hopefully be able to work normally in the next three, four, five days."

However, Klopp also revealed that Jakub Blaszczykowski, Oliver Kirch (both muscle) and Nuri Sahin (knee) are not yet to be considered for selection.

"He [Blaszczykowski] does everything without the ball with no problems," he added. "But he still has to wait a little while.

On Kirch and Sahin, he added: "Both will take the longest time of all to recover."

Schmidt: Leverkusen struggled with fatigue

5 October 2014

675539header.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt said fatigue was behind Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to 10-man Paderborn.

Lars Bender cancelled out Suleyman Koc's opener before half-time and Leverkusen were expected to go on to win the match after Paderborn's Marvin Bakalorz was sent off with 18 minutes remaining.

Paderborn stunned the BayArena crowd when Moritz Stoppelkamp restored their lead three minutes from time but Leverkusen at least got something from the contest - Karim Bellarabi netting a 90th-minute equaliser.

While Leverkusen lost ground on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, they did enough to remain in the top four.

Schmidt told reporters that Leverkusen struggled to back up from their UEFA Champions League win over Portuguese champions Benfica on Wednesday.

"This was a very difficult game for us," Schmidt said. "The team were a little tired in the legs and tired in the head.

"We were not as consistent as usual at the counter of Paderborn in defence.

"The positive was that the team played better after the substitutions in the second half.

"We were not always smart and intelligent in our play but in the end you have to evaluate the outcome positively."

Schalke fire Keller and hire Di Matteo

Oct 7, 2014 08:00:32

The Bundesliga outfit have parted company with the 43-year-old after just two wins in 10 games in all competitions and turned to the former Chelsea boss

Schalke have confirmed the dismissal of Jens Keller as coach and the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as his successor with immediate effect.

Keller's position had come under intense scrutiny after a poor start to the 2014-15 season in which they fell at the first hurdle in the DFB-Pokal, to Dynamo Dresden, but a Champions League draw away to Chelsea lifted spirits in Gelsenkirchen and back-to-back wins over Werder Bremen and rivals Borussia Dortmund eased the pressure on the 43-year-old.

However, after a disappointing draw at home to Maribor last week and defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday, Keller met with sporting director Horst Heldt on Monday and was relieved of his duties.

Schalke then announced the following morning that Di Matteo, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2012, had been installed as the club's new coach.

"Schalke have parted company with Jens Keller," read a brief statement on the club's official Twitter feed. "Roberto Di Matteo takes over."

Keller initially joined Schalke as the club's Under-17 coach but took charge of the senior squad in December 2012, succeeding Huub Stevens at the helm.

He was given a contract until the end of the season but signed a two-year extension in the summer of 2013.

However, Keller has now paid the price for a run of just two wins from 10 games in all competitions at the start of the current campaign.

Consequently, Schalke have now turned to Di Matteo, who has been without a full-time job since being sacked by Chelsea in November 2012.

The Italian led the Blues to Champions League glory in his then capacity as caretaker coach the season before, with the Premier League outfit overcoming Barcelona in the semi-finals before beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the decider at the Allianz Arena.

However, after being given the job on a permanent basis before the start of the 2012-13 season, he was fired after Chelsea's defence of their European crown was effectively ended by a 3-0 loss to Juventus in Turin.

Shaqiri: I must accept Bayern will not sell me

465953_heroa.jpg

By Joe Wright
Oct 7, 2014 17:24:56

The Switzerland star has vowed to "give everything" for the Bundesliga champions after the club made it clear they would consider selling him

Xherdan Shaqiri says he must accept that Bayern Munich will not sell him and has vowed to give his utmost on the pitch for Pep Guardiola.

The Switzerland international was subject of a bid from Liverpool during the summer, while Juventus and Roma were also credited with an interest, after he had struggled to secure regular first-team football at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern went public with their desire to keep the 22-year-old, although new reports have emerged this week suggesting that Spanish champions Atletico Madrid will make an €18 million bid for his services.

Shaqiri, however, accepts that Bayern have made their stance clear over his future and is determined to "give everything" for the club this term.

"I've still got a contract until 2016 and the club have already told me I won't be going anywhere so I've just got to accept that," he told Sport1. "For as long as I am here, I will give everything I've got.

"I try to do my best in training and when the coach rewards me with appearances, like against Hannover, then that's even better. I'm always delighted when I can start games, and I show that too, like I did this time. I think everybody could see how hungry I am to play football."

Shaqiri set up Robert Lewandowski's second goal with a stunning long-range pass in Bayern's 4-0 win over Hannover at the weekend.

Ribery nears Bayern return

Oct 10, 2014 12:06:26

The Frenchman has made just one appearance for the German champions this season due to a recurring knee problem

Franck Ribery is edging closer to making his Bayern Munch return following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The former France international has made just one appearance for the German champions this season as a result of a persistent knee problem.

But the 31-year-old, who was also forced out of this year’s World Cup with a back injury, returned to training with the ball this week after his tendon inflammation calmed.

“Franck Ribery is making good progress towards a comeback. The Frenchman has been sidelined recently with a painful swelling around the kneecap but was back outdoors and working with the ball on Tuesday,” read a statement on the club website.

“Supervised by fitness specialist Dr. Holger Broich and sports rehab trainer Thomas Wilhelmi, Ribery completed an intense training session, including slalom runs and top speed sprints.”

Bayern are still without the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez and Holger Badstuber in what has been an injury-plagued start to the season for coach Pep Guardiola.

They sit four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with 17 points from seven games.

Lahm: I'm glad I didn't leave Bayern for England

456294_heroa.jpg

By Mark Doyle
Oct 12, 2014 13:14:28

The World Cup winner has revealed that he entertained the idea of joining a Premier League club in 2009 but is delighted that he opted to stay in Bavaria

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm says he is glad he decided against moving to England when he was considering his future at the Allianz Arena.

After a trophyless 2008-09 campaign, the defender-turned-midfielder entertained the idea of quitting the Bavarian outfit for pastures new and was reportedly approached by a number of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United.

However, Lahm ultimately decided to stay put and has since won three Bundesliga titles, a Champions League and the Club World Cup.

"I did think about England before that and there were some interesting possibilities," the 30-year-old told the Daily Mail.

"But Bayern are my hometown club and I was convinced we were on to a good thing again.

"I felt we had the chance to win the Champions League. I’d rather win it with my club than any other.

"Thankfully my decision turned out to be the right one."

Having retired from international football after leading Germany to World Cup glory in Brazil this summer, Lahm's primary focus is on helping Bayern win the Champions League for a second time in three seasons.

They once again have Manchester City for company in the group stage and kicked off their continental campaign in the best possible style by beating the English champions 1-0 at the Allianz Arena last month.

City, of course, are one of the richest clubs in world football and Lahm freely admits that he is baffled by their inability to make a big impact on the European stage.

‘I can’t really understand it because Manchester City are an outstanding team and a top side with great players like Yaya Toure," he mused. "They’ve got so many good players in their squad.

"They did have a tough game to start with here in Munich and that puts you under pressure straight away because you have to go on and win games.

"But I still think they have the ability to go a long way in the Champions League."

Gundogan: I'm ready for BVB comeback

The influential midfielder has been out of action for the past 14 months, but is raring to go again versus Koln on Saturday

Ilkay Gundogan is eagerly anticipating making his Borussia Dortmund return against Koln at the weekend after a 14-month spell on the sidelines.

The Germany international has been out of action with a back problem since August 2013, but is raring to go again after featuring in a friendly game with Dortmund's reserves last week.

"I think that I am available for first-team selection again from here on," Gundogan told Sky Sport News.

"The plan was to get in some training hours during the international break and make another step forward in a friendly game.

"I will be part of the squad again from the point that everybody returns from the international break. This weekend's match versus Koln should be that moment.

"So long as nothing out of the ordinary happens, I expect to be part of the match squad versus Koln."

Gundogan joined Dortmund from Nurnberg in the summer of 2011 and had developed into an important first-team player before his long-term setback.

'Why always me?' - Thiago left devastated after knee injury

By Peter McVitie
Oct 15, 2014 13:31:10

The midfielder was "disappointed and desperate" after hearing the news he will be out of action for some time with another serious ligament injury that requires surgery

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara says he is "disappointed and desperate" after being told he faces another lengthy period on the sidelines, having suffered a serious knee ligament injury.

The midfielder is yet to feature for Bayern Munich in 2014-15 and has struggled with fitness issues ever since his move from Barcelona in the summer of 2013 having featured in just 16 Bundesliga games last season.

Thiago had returned to training but has suffered yet another problem and is expected to be out for a lengthy spell again as he will undergo surgery to repair the ligament tear.

"Very, very bitter news for Bayern: Thiago Alcantara has again suffered a serious injury while training on Tuesday," the club announced on their official website.

"He suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. The 23-year-old midfielder must again undergo surgery and will be out longer-term."

Thiago was upset after receiving the news, but has pledged to fight back and return to the squad as soon as he can.

"What can I say?" he said on the club's official website. "Of course, I am profoundly disappointed and desperate at the moment.

"Why always me? But I will not give up. I will fight again. I'm going to get close again and I will celebrate my comeback at Bayern."

The Bavarian club's sporting director, Matthias Sammer, says the club has been shaken by the injury but insists the midfielder has their full support.

"We are all shocked and saddened by this re-injury," said Sammer.

"Thiago was so close to his comeback after a long time out but he knows that the whole of FC Bayern is there for him. We will do everything to ensure that he is healthy again and can bring us a lot of titles."

Alonso: Guardiola was desperate to sign me - that's why I ditched Real Madrid

469339_heroa.jpg

By Christoph Köckeis
Oct 14, 2014 20:31:32

The midfielder concedes it was tough to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this year but has no regrets about joining Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich

Xabi Alonso has revealed that Pep Guardiola's infectious desire to sign him was enough to convince him to ditch Real Madrid this summer.

The midfielder joined Bayern Munich in a deal rumoured to be worth €10 million, ending his five-year stint with the reigning European champions.

Many people suspected Toni Kroos arrival from the Allianz Arena was the reason Alonso chose to jump the Santiago Bernabeu ship, but he continues to deny this and stressed that all was well at Real Madrid and that he just wanted a change of scenery - which Guardiola was desperate to provide him.

"There are lots of opinions on my reason for moving in Spain," he told Goal. "But the fact is that I wanted a restart. For me, it was the right decision for my career.

"It had nothing to do with transfers or with Toni Kroos. Carlo Ancelotti trusted me and he knew that I would play an important role. There were no problems in Madrid.

"It was no easy decision but I thought that the right moment had come. Real Madrid are a big club. Now I had the chance to get to know another big club, in a new country, to experience new things. For me, it was the last chance to join Bayern.

"When I had made up my mind, I talked to the club officials at Real. They respected my decision and wanted to support me. Pep Guardiola wanted me badly and that was really important for me.

"I have always written the script for my career. That played an important part in my decision. When the interest in me became bigger, I thought about it seriously. I was already at a big club knowing that I would play because coach Carlo Ancelotti trusted me.

"After five years and having just won the Champions League - something we had worked hard towards for years - I was looking for a new challenge. It certainly was the right moment."

Having worked with a number of Champions League-winning trainers - including Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez - Alonso gave his verdict on the style of his new boss, Guardiola, whom he claims works meticulously on forming the perfect tactics for Bayern.

"It is difficult to compare coaches," the Spaniard added. "Guardiola is an analyst. He always tries to improve the team, to prepare it perfectly for the next match.

"He always thinks about new ideas and has a great tactical background. For hours he thinks about the right tactics and he tries to teach the players what they have to do and consider. He spends hours coming up with a gameplan.

"For me, it is an incredible experience. I've learnt many things. He was a reason why I came here. He had a big interest in getting me here. For me, it was very important to feel that trust."

Bundesliga Preview: Bayern host Bremen, Di Matteo begins Schalke reign

16 October 2014

692475header.jpg

Bottom plays top in the Bundesliga this weekend as Werder Bremen make the daunting trip to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern Munich.

Pep Guardiola's defending champions have yet to be beaten this season and hold a four-point advantage at the summit after seven matches.

In contrast, Bremen are without a victory and recent history suggests Robin Dutt's men are unlikely to end their winless run on Saturday.

Bremen's last away triumph came back in March, at Hannover, and they were thumped 5-2 on their last visit to Bayern in April.

Hoffenheim, Bayern's closest rivals at this stage together with Borussia Monchengladbach, will also face a side struggling at the wrong end of the table when they head to Hamburg on Sunday.

However, Josef Zinnbauer's side picked up a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund prior to the international break and are sure to have been buoyed by that success.

Monchengladbach travel to Hannover seeking to maintain their own unbeaten start, while seventh-placed Mainz - the only other side yet to lose in the Bundesliga thus far - host Augsburg having drawn five of their seven fixtures.

Roberto Di Matteo will lead Schalke for the first time when Hertha Berlin visit Gelsenkirchen.

Defender Benedikt Howedes has been impressed with the early work of Di Matteo, who succeeded Jens Keller at Schalke last week.

"He is a calm kind of person who gives clear instructions, has clear ideas and a clear style of play," said Howedes.

"We want to dominate the match [against Hertha] and put the coach's instructions into practice straight away."

Howedes is one of four players back in contention for Schalke, with Jan Kirchhoff, Kaan Ayhan and Dennis Aogo also returning to fitness.

Dortmund are already 10 points adrift of Bayern following a shaky start to the season, but boss Jurgen Klopp could welcome back llkay Gundogan, Marco Reus, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Sebastian Kehl when last season's runner-up take on Cologne.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg travel to Freiburg and Stuttgart will look to inflict only a second defeat of the season on fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

The final game of the weekend sees Paderborn entertain Eintracht Frankfurt, the new boys looking to end a three-game winless streak.

Reus, Gundogan in line for Dortmund returns

16 October 2014

692431header.jpg

Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan are set to hand Jurgen Klopp a boost and come into contention for Borussia Dortmund's clash with Cologne.

Ahead of Saturday's fixture at the RheinEnergieStadion, both Reus and Gundogan have been in full training with Klopp confirming the pair could return to full competitive action this weekend.

Gundogan has not featured since August last year due to ongoing back problems while Reus suffered a second ligament injury in four months while on international duty with Germany in September.

Both took part in an Under-23 match on Friday and are ready to boost a Dortmund side who have taken just one point from their last possible 12 in the top flight.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also available after a foot injury while Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl are fit again after thigh and groin problems respectively.

Shinji Kagawa and Ciro Immobile are likely to shake off knocks from the international break ahead of Saturday's trip to Cologne but Klopp warned the return of some star names does not mean Dortmund can take anything for granted.

"Marco, Kehl, Mkhitaryan and Ilkay are all training regularly and will be available," he said.

"[Reus and Gundogan] are able to play the football Dortmund demand [but] we must not believe that just because other names appear on the team sheet, we automatically win games.

"There is nothing to worry about Kagawa's concussion. He trained yesterday. Erik Durm has a light cold from his trip with the national team, everything's okay with Mats [Hummels].

"Immobile got a knock on his calf, but that also shouldn't be a problem."

Bayern have discussed Reus transfer - Rummenigge

16 October 2014

692555header.jpg

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that Bayern Munich have discussed the possibility of signing Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus.

Bayern chairman Rummenigge angered Dortmund back in August by claiming that Reus has a buy-out clause of €25million in his contract – which expires in June 2017 - that comes into effect next year.

Franz Beckenbauer then fuelled the row further, Bayern's honorary president stating that he expects Reus to leave Signal Iduna Park.

Bundesliga champions Bayern, who have previously raided Dortmund to sign Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski, have understandably been linked with a move for Germany international Reus.

And Rummenigge has now given the first indication that it is a transfer the Bavarians are considering.

In an interview with Sport1, Rummenigge said: "If a German international has an exit clause and his contract is running out, Bayern is obliged to think about him. With Marco Reus his release clause is known.

"Whether we deal with it, I cannot seriously predict. We've talked too little internally about the subject.

"There are many great clubs from other countries who would be interested in signing Marco Reus.

"Of course they [Dortmund] will try to extend his contract. But at the end of the day the player will decide what he wants."

Bundesliga Review: Di Matteo makes winning start, Dortmund lose again

18 October 2014

695223header.jpg

Roberto Di Matteo made a winning start to his reign as Schalke coach with a 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Di Matteo – who was appointed as Jens Keller's replacement last Tuesday – witnessed his new side earn a relatively comfortable win at the Veltins-Arena.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a powerful header from Julian Draxler's cross.

Draxler then turned goalscorer in the 65th minute with a deflected strike to give Di Matteo a dream debut at the helm of the Gelsenkirchen club.

But there was nothing for Schalke's arch rivals Dortmund to celebrate as their winless league run was stretched to five games courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Cologne.

Midfielder Kevin Vogt prodded home the opener for the hosts in the 40th minute, only for the returning Marco Reus to set up Ciro Immobile for the equaliser three minutes after half-time.

Yet there was to be a twist in favour of Cologne, who condemned under-fire Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp to another defeat in the 74th minute, attacker Simon Zoller turning home Yuya Osako's delivery after an error from Roman Weidenfeller.

Dortmund appear to be in the midst of a crisis, however, defending champions Bayern Munich produced another scintillating display of their quality with a 6-0 hammering of hapless bottom club Werder Bremen.

Captain Philipp Lahm and Mario Gotze both scored doubles as Pep Guardiola's side cantered to their sixth triumph of the campaign.

A brace from Max Kruse gave high-flying Borussia Monchengladbach a 3-0 success at Hannover and Daniel Caligiuri was on target twice for Wolfsburg in a 2-1 away win against Freiburg.

Meanwhile, Stuttgart produced a magnificent comeback to claim a point with a 3-3 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Two goals in the space of nine minutes from Son Heung-Min and a 41st-minute Karim Bellarabi effort put Leverkusen in command but Stuttgart hit back as three in 19 minutes from Timo Werner, Florian Klein and Martin Harnik salvaged a remarkable result.

Elsewhere, Mainz beat Augsburg 2-1 thanks to Jonas Hofmann and Jairo goals.

Starke injury adds to Bayern´s goalkeeper troubles

Bayern Munich's goalkeeping options have been further depleted after Tom Starke sustained an ankle injury.

The 33-year-old picked up the problem in training on Sunday and subsequently underwent surgery the following day.

Starke joins fellow goalkeeper Pepe Reina on the sidelines after the close-season signing injured his calf earlier this month.

Spain international Reina, who joined from Liverpool in August, was hurt when he featured in Bayern's friendly with a Paulaner dream team of amateur footballers in Unterhaching.

It means Bayern are now short of experienced cover for regular number one and Germany international Manuel Neuer.

Bayern reserve-team stopper Leopold Zingerie has now been called into the first-team squad for the club's trip to Roma in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Leverkusen ordered to repay over €16m to former sponsor

22 October 2014

Bayer Leverkusen are considering an appeal after being ordered to repay over €16million to Teldafax, their insolvent former sponsor.

The Cologne Regional Court ruled on Wednesday that the Bundesliga club must pay back in full the sponsorship payments they received from 2009 to 2011, plus interest.

Electricity provider Teldafax filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and the company's liquidator, Biner Bahr, alleged that Leverkusen had continued to accept sponsorship when they were aware of the company's financial problems.

A statement from Leverkusen expressed discontent at the court's ruling.

"We are disappointed and surprised that our arguments and facts have not been considered," said managing director Michael Schade.

"We will now wait for the verdict and then consider whether we will appeal against this judgment."

The Spain international has had a ruptured knee ligament repaired but still faces another long layoff from first-team football

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has undergone successful surgery as he prepares for another long spell on the sidelines.

The Spain international suffered another blow when he sustained a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in training last week.

Thiago has been plagued by injuries since his move from Barcelona 15 months ago and Bayern coach Pep Guardiola admitted the Bundesliga champions may have made a mistake in the manner in which they managed his previous knee problem.

The Bavarian giants revealed on Thursday that the 23-year-old has gone under the knife and the operation went according to plan.

A club statement said: "The operation in Barcelona, attended by FCB team doctor Dr Lutz Hansel, was completed without any complications.

"However, Thiago faces a long lay-off and is likely to be out of action for several months."

Free-scoring Bayern face Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Sunday, when they will be eyeing a seventh consecutive victory in all competitions.
