SINGAPORE — Two books pulled off the shelves of the library’s children’s section will not be pulped, Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim told the Straits Times. Instead, they will be moved to the adult section.

“I have also asked NLB to review the process by which they deal with such books,” Dr Yaacob said in comments which were also posted on his Facebook page today (July 18).

The two books — And Tango Makes Three and The White Swan Express — were withdrawn after a complaint on the public “We are against Pinkdot in Singapore” Facebook page. Among the concerns were the depictions of families with same-sex parents. It later emerged that a third book, Who’s In My Family, was withdrawn in May following a complaint made to the NLB.

“Many objected to the idea that the books would be pulped after being withdrawn from circulation. I understand these reactions, which reflect a deep-seated respect in our culture for the written word,” Dr Yaacob posted on Facebook.

“Who’s In My Family had already been disposed of as the title had been reviewed earlier. But I have instructed NLB not to pulp the two other titles, but instead to place them in the adult section of the public libraries.

“The decision on what books children can or cannot read remains with their parents. Parents who wish to borrow these books to read with their children will have the option to do so.”

He reiterated his support of the library’s stand to withdraw the books.

“We stand by the NLB’s decision to remove the three books from the children’s section. As I said earlier, the NLB has to decide what books should be made readily available to children, who are usually unsupervised, in the children’s section of our public libraries,” he said.

“The NLB will continue to ensure that books in the children’s section are age-appropriate. We have a much wider range of books in the adult section of public libraries.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA

I don't understand the need to physically destroy the books. Pulp, burn, dip in a vat of acid, throw into volcano lava etc.

Is it a gesture to show that the NLB is staunchly pro-family? To send a signal or a message to everyone?

Wouldn't it have been much simpler to get rid of books by selling them or giving them away? Just don't stock them on your library shelves if you don't want them to be there. Problem solved.

Imbeciles.

Dear NLB,Thank you for destroying the books. I believe in family values and I am glad that you do too. A lot of people are against this. They don’t know what they are talking about because they do not agree with us. Please destroy more books and become an empty building, to better signify the emptiness of mind and spirit that is the community norm.

14679766765_f28896ac22_o.jpg

</center>I have read many comment threads regarding the topic, and it is very easy to see where someone stands on family values by the way they write. Those who love family tend to be illiterate. Many of them exhibit Irritable Vowel Syndrome and tok lik dis.
They are the very example of why we need less libraries. If there were more libraries, people will become literate and families will become extinct. There is a clear co-relation between literacy and family. Poor people, who tend to be illiterate, have more children.
You are doing your part for the country by increasing population growth. You understand that literacy increases income, which lowers birthrate. We need more poor, illiterate people, to better serve the millionaire foreigners who come here to work. You truly love your country very much. Future generations should be illiterate and poor, in order to have even more future generations.
I thank you for taking a stand against literacy. The world would be a terrible place indeed if libraries promoted reading.
I am very glad indeed that you care about society, human civilisation and future generations. We do not want family to become extinct. Family can only survive if everyone were bad at language and logic, and people gain these skills by reading.
As you can see, I write in complete sentences, so it may be too late for me. I try my best to give up my grammar but it is extremely hard. So so hard. I try to massage my arguments with pathos, but I simply cannot release my logos. It is very frustrating. I am constantly in a state of textual frustration.
I also know that the heter in heterosexual means “different”, and I find this enforcement of a homogeneous culture to be greatly ironic. I understand irony, so I might be too far lost in literacy.
I want to be this guy.

</center>While he writes in complete sentences, he demonstrates an over-reliance on clichés and a weak grasp on the use of metaphor. He also understands that commas are evil. Clearly an intellect worth his grain of salt, whose views are worth splat. One big splat. He has released his logos. His logos is simply all over the place.
(More likely a girl; “Hana” means “flower” in Japanese. But my small joke makes less sense in a feminine context, so let us all pretend that I didn’t know that. See, I’m becoming more ignorant already!)
This guy is another example of good textual intercourse.
<center>
14493124848_56264bac00_o.png

</center>He accuses her of conflating single parenthood with homosexuality, when this very conflation was done by family valued people like him and the Minister for <strike>Censorship</strike> Communications and Information. What an amazing demonstration of family values! He clearly understands that consistency leads to integrity and family values is not about integrity. Integrity is what stops ships from sinking and family values is all about breaking things apart.
Breaking things apart with love. Those not in families do not deserve to be loved, and those who value families are noble people for loving them even though they are monsters. Some family valued people are so noble, good and kind that they even go out to hire the untouchables and spend time with them. What an amazing example of not being the anti-loving people that some make us out to be.
It is good that the library wants more people like these two shining examples of what not reading can do. Literacy is morality’s apocalypse.
You alone protect us from the dangers of clear expression and rational thought. We should not have to think for ourselves when there are people who say that they can think for us. We should not have to express ourselves when there are people whose opinions we can parrot. We should be puppets for our betters. Literature reminds us that we have a soul and a mind and that is bad for human civilisation and future generations.
Reading also has other dangers besides making us able to express our thoughts to other people (which is like telepathy and is thus a dark sorcery and against the natural order). Reading is dangerous because it turns you into things. This is a fact.

Their love was so real.[/SIZE]</center>Someone tried to explain to me that this Disney documentary didn’t really happen.
Obviously, he doesn’t know what he is talking about because he disagrees with me. Trying to change my mind is proof that he doesn’t love his country and/or future generations (Family values states that repeating something often makes it true).
<summ>Family values teaches that reading about gay will turn you gay. And reading about penguin will turn you penguin. I do not want to accidentally become a penguin. It would be difficult to explain.</summ>
I am very pleased that you are taking a stand against the avian agenda for the sake of country and future generations. We do not want birds all over the place. They make a lot of noise and have bad table manners. The avian agenda wants to give all of us bird flu. I am doing my part against the penguins by supporting global warming. Global warming is good for the country. Future generations will thank us when there are no penguins left!
Similarly, homosexuality is textually-transmitted.
Someone being gay is really none of my business. I once had a close encounter. I have some close friendships with other men, and I once accidentally asked of one; “Are you gay?”
He looked at me for a long moment. The question just slipped out and there was no way I could put it back in.
Thankfully, he said: “No.”
“That’s good,” I said. The crisis was averted and we continued to have sex.
But I digress. Country/future generations. Someone being gay is none of my business.
I actually find it rather disturbing how some people are so obsessed with what other people do in the bedroom. It’s like they secretly want to watch, but are too shy to actually ask, so they keep talking about it hoping that someone would take the hint and invite them to join in.
Presumably so that they can rub their grain of salt intellects together and get their views to splat at each other. Views must be very salty indeed; don’t get any in your eyes when you splat!
(I really have no idea what gay people do.)
Once again, NLB, thank you for hating literacy/loving family values. Country! Future generations!

Your greatest fan.

The change of mind by the imbecile Yaccob on this matter tells us that:

THIS IDIOT has no mind of his own, does not have the strength of conviction in his decision. As a extremely well paid minister, he should have thought the whole thing through before speaking through his arse. What he has done is to double confirm the view that he is very forked tongue, and shoot his big mouth off without realising that he was speaking through his arse.

THE WAYANG that the NLB was the decision-maker in the matter is now exposed. They were operating under orders from the fork-tongued minister. having said that, the CEO and the Panellists should make a stand, if they were that convinced to make a decision which happens once every 50 years.

THE WEAK (OR RATHER, NON) LEADERSHIP at NLB and ministerial level is alarming. How can serious decisions on issues like this get to have its head turned around within days? What comes across is that there is an absolute lack of principles on the part of those who make the decisions, led by the
NLB CEO and the fork-tongued Minister.

I really do not understand, what is the problem?? The story of the penguin, is based on true life penguins in a certain zoo right? so, why condemn something that happen in nature, naturally!?

Why can't they just place a warning sticker on the books, & let the parents decide if they want the child to read the books, or leave it to the parents duty to explain the story. Let the child explore...

Like I did, when I was young...I explore the National Library at Stamford Rd...in the reference section, asking the librarian, to take out for me, the copy of Grey's book of Anatomy....I was not looking at toes & bones, mind you..I was curious!! Should they ban & burn that book too?? corrupting a young child's mind...me! ha ha ha ha

You should drop prudish attitudes towards sex and bring your kids to the zoo. It'll be educational for them.

Parents like you will inevitably raise repressed sex criminals.

Happening in zoo, is nature, happening naturally...we did not dictate, how animals behave, they do it instinctively...unless you do it at the zoo... then, it is not naturally right?

We are not taking about porn....are there porn in the children's section... i want to borrow, nvm, the kids borrowing them...my point is, if they think the subject matter may not be suitable for children of that age or whatever, their should be warning sticker on the book...

Words are like double edged sword......what you think is written , it is...if you think, it is not, it isn't!... ha ha ha ha
