: Following news of the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, Singapore Airlines (SIA) said on July 18 (Friday) that its airlines do not fly in Ukraine airspace.

“Customers may wish to note that Singapore Airlines flights are not using Ukraine airspace,” SIA said in a Facebook post early Friday morning. “Our thoughts are with the passengers and crew of MH17, and their families,” it added in a separate post.

A Singapore Airlines spokeswoman was quoted as saying by Reuters: "We have re-routed our flights since the incidents and are no longer using that airspace."

FlightRadar24, a website that provides global flight tracking, earlier published an image showing an SIA flight close to where MH17 was last seen on radar. Flight SQ351 and Air India flight AI113 were about 25km from the Malaysia Airlines jet when it disappeared, according to FlightRadar24.

sia says now it is not using but the more pertinent question is : " was it 25km from the ill fated plane?" which means that it was using ukraine airspace, which means nobody bothers about which country the plane flies over until there is an incident.

Most likely reason is to save money

The planes r flying in approved air corridor. Just bad luck MH17 got hit!

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was flying just 1,000 feet (300 metres) above restricted airspace when it was shot down, according to the European air traffic control body.
Eurocontrol said Ukrainian authorities had barred aircraft from ground level to 32,000 feet but the doomed aircraft was cruising at 33,000 feet, still within range of sophisticated ground-to-air weaponry, when it was hit. All flights in eastern Ukraine have now been barred from the area, Eurocontrol added.

"The aircraft was flying at Flight Level 330 [approximately 10,000 metres/33,000 ft] when it disappeared from the radar," said. "This route had been closed by the Ukrainian authorities from ground to flight level 320 [32,000ft] but was open at the level at which the aircraft was flying."

It also emerged that as recently as a month ago British airlines were given the all-clear to overfly the area where flight MH17 was downed, after being told that operations were "normal" in the region.

These missiles can reach up to 72,000 feet. No civilan planes are beyond their range altitudewise.

dont blindly trust whatever authorities.
Those chaps may not even care

use common sense.

Planes are being shot down over that area and all the airline operators still blindly go in.

I dont care if others say its a nice chocolate cake but if it smells like shit i am not going to eat it.

Whoever submitted that aircraft flight plan failed to understand the risk of flying over an air space where there is on-going fighting between Govt forces and rebels. Innocent lives were lost due to the idiocy of that flight planner.

SIA WAS flying over Ukraine before the incident yesterday. I was flying between Singapore and Europe on SQ flights a month ago and watched the flight paths on my passenger screens. The planes flew over the southern part of Ukraine.

COI will be called.
One or few scapegoats (not CEO/ senior management) might appear in COI report.
Then, business as usual.

Choi!! Please don't even say this!! I'm still travelling on SIA. No matter what they say, its still a great way to fly.
