It all started with 2 separate incidents and both had religion in it.
Firstly there has been some concerns about some your Malay transsexuals over their behaviour in previous pinkdot events. Some segments felt that it cast an slur on their community. Interestingly it was not about being members of LGBT but their dressing and conduct during the event. This escalated into taking a stand but they did not want highlight members of their own community. Thus the dress in white protest.
The second is a quite a long running saga that began in 1987 between the church and those that was detained. This had nothing to do with LGBT at the start. Over the years, this conflict carried and F8 began to force the Church to take a stand. It resulted in the incident in exchange of letters, the govt stepping in. Alex Au stepped and wrote a hard hitting article against the Church. What became as an issue of detention moved quickly into LGBT space F8 and the LGBT had overlapping interest and members and not surprising when it involves freedom from oppression.
With Lawrence Khong and VW stepping to address their own agenda, religion is now squarely in the middle.
Will this be a second Aware Saga where the Christian right began to plot behind the scenes and did their first ever coup de tat.
