Lim Boon Heng, "special adviser" to the chairman of the People's Association

PM Lee made his first public appearance in Aljunied GRC yesterday night (13 Jul) since his party, the PAP, lost the constituency to the Workers’ Party (WP) in May 2011 at the last GE.

Mr Lee was there to launch the Care programme, which stands for communication, action, response and engagement. It is a community messaging and alert system rolled out by the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) in Aljunied GRC.

Care is supposed to help residents communicate with one another to help each other should anything happen. It’s not known how effective this programme will turn out to be given that most residents will likely contact their immediate family members or relatives should something happen .

Mr Lee said, “Tell your friends and ask them to also join in the care network and support your CCC chairman and your grassroots so we can make this a good place.”

Some 5,000 attended last night’s launch with hundreds of people surrounding PM Lee, all wanting to take pictures with him.

Mr Lim Boon Heng, who accompanied the PM at last night’s event, told reporters, “As you can see, the morale in the grassroots has improved since 2011. The level of activities has increased… Residents are also getting used to the team.”

Mr Lim, currently the chairman of Temasek Holdings, was present at the event as the “special adviser” to the chairman of the People’s Association.

He said that PAP’s slate of potential candidates for WP-held Aljunied GRC is “getting into place”.

“Of course, party strategy can change according to the situation,” he added. “We’ve a number of people working on the ground but have to see if they are best suited for this place or not.”

Since the last GE, the former team of PAP candidates have all left Aljunied GRC:

  • Lim Hwee Hua
  • Cynthia Phua
  • Ong Ye Kung
  • George Yeo
  • Zainul Abidin Rasheed
Even the ‘What-Doesn’t-Kill-You-Makes-You-Stronger’ Ong Ye Kung, who originally left behind in Aljunied GRC to take care of matters, has also moved to Sembawang GRC.

Presently, the new chairmen of the PAP branches in Aljunied GRC are:

  • Victor Lye for Bedok Reservoir-Punggol division (grassroots activist [Link])
  • K Muralidharan Pillai for Paya Lebar division (grassroots activist [Link])
  • Chan Hui Yuh for Serangoon division (grassroots activist [Link])
  • Chua Eng Leong for Eunos division (son of former Cabinet Minister Chua Sian Chin)
  • Kahar Hassan for Kaki Bukit division (SMRT Deputy Director), who took over from Ong Ye Kung
The PAP’s branch chairmen are usually its elected or slated candidates for that ward. Mr Lim told the reporters that the current PAP’s potential new line-up for Aljunied GRC “are very committed”.

“They are the hard-working type,” Mr Lim said.

Mr Victor Lye, who also chairs the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol CCC under PA, said of the turnout, “There are people who know the Government can do a good job. While it is not perfect, they know this Government is doing something for the people – it is not short term.”

Indeed. Screwing the people is best done over a long period of time.

I the people had enough of the PAP their fucking policy is too stringent!
What they impLeement the they get!! ire regardless what you think or protest!
they will go ahead and implement and make the money out it!!

I respect the Hongkonger. This is what their gahmen wanted to implement the ERP, the people protested they
listen and they do away with ERP!! This is what I called Gahmen listen to the people!!

. Unlike PAP the other way round!! they listen to all the balls carrier, any obejection
from opposition they will gun them down!!

Just look at the COE the gahmen just want money ir-regardless of poor car sales!! they only know
how to take advantage of the situation, 1.6L with higher engine power now move to the next category
to make more money...they will stay above $60K they just to screw the people!!

Field this type of team they really pang Chiu.

Obviously. The fact that they move out Ong Ye Kung shows that the PAP wants their own second-tier candidates in opposition wards. Second-tier such as Sitoh and Eric Low. Sitoh is the only one who won and I believe he will not be fielded in 2016.

Actually not really right to see it this way. Election campaign are either fought using big names or grassroots candidates. It doesn't necessary mean big name will have the upperhand and will always win. PAP obviously opted not to risk ministers or ministerial potential in their quest to win back Aljunied.

I think this strategy is quite logical as it enables PAP to use their grassroots candidates to harass WP on municipal issues while ministers attacking WP on national issues. 2 pronged approach.

What I am saying is, PAP will not put those they want in parliament to be in the opposition wards. They will put those who if get into parliament is their bonus but if not is no PAP's loss.

Care is supposed to help resid

5000 Singaporeans show up for PM Lee.

50 Sinkies show up to listen to garbage from the opposition at Hong Lim.

It's pretty obvious that 2016 is going to a resounding victory for LHL and his team.

Yes, this is pretty much the strategy. How the PAP responds to likely tough fights in East Coast and Tampines GRCs would be interesting to watch.

Singaporeans think it is ok to fund the ruling party's activies with taxpayers' money. A good reminder to the WP that liberals have moved on to bigger issues.
