SEMPORNA: A massive air and sea hunt for Filipino gunmen possibly holding a Malaysian marine police constable is on as all escape routes off Semporna has been cut off.

According to security officials, patrol boats from various security forces as well as the navy’s helicopter have been scouring the Semporna area for the gunmen who killed a 32-year-old marine police corporal in Mabul island.

Marine policeman Kpl Abdul Rajah Jamuan was killed while a constable identified as Zakiah Aleip, 26, was believed to be kidnapped after a shootout with gunmen during an ambush at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort in the island at about 11pm on Saturday.
Initial indication was that the gunmen might have rowed into the area with their boat before climbing up the resorts jetty from the back of the building.

It is learnt that as soon as they entered, the gunmen started to shoot randomly towards the restaurant, reception office and jetty area before fleeing. Two other policemen managed to take cover during the shooting.

One of the policeman, Sgt Jeffridin who was on a boat nearby, heard the commotion and went to investigate. He found that two of his colleagues had gone missing.
Kpl Abdul Rajah's body was later found under the jetty.

It is suspected that the shootout could be due to revenge attacks or for ransom demand.

It was the latest in a spate of kidnappings in Sabah, highlighting persistent security threats in the state. Sabah is a short boat ride from the southern Philippines, home to Muslim militants and kidnap gangs.

Eight gunmen wearing army fatigues barged into the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort late Saturday and ambushed marine police officers on guard there, said Abdul Rashid Haron, who heads the Eastern Sabah Security Command.

A marine policeman was killed in the shootout and the gunmen, who had their faces covered, fled on a boat with another officer, Abdul Rashid said, adding that the boat was seen heading toward the southern Philippines.

He said the gunmen may either have been planning to kidnap someone at the resort or were targeting marine police after recent increased security on the island helped to curb their activities.

"We don't know their motive. Maybe they were retaliating because we have tightened security in the area. I cannot rule that out," Abdul Rashid said.

It was not clear who was behind the attack, but previous kidnappings are believed to have been carried out by Abu Sayyaf militants.

The kidnappings have hampered tourism in Sabah, a popular destination for foreigners and a diving haven. Sabah's government has announced a curfew and travel restrictions in high-risk areas to bolster security.

It was the fourth kidnapping in Sabah since April. A 32-year-old Malaysian fish breeder and his Filipino worker were abducted by Filipino gunmen from their farm last month and believed taken to the southern Philippines.

A Chinese fish farm manager, a Chinese tourist and a Filipino resort worker who were all kidnapped earlier this year have since been released.

The Abu Sayyaf, which operates out of the southern Philippines, has had links to international terrorist networks, including al-Qaida, but a U.S.-backed Philippine military crackdown has weakened it considerably in recent years.
The group has about 300 fighters and now is focused on ransom kidnappings.

Now that the Police are the victims, all hell will break lose. The Malaysian Government will not tolerate any such nonsense. They will now open both barrels. Those of Filipino extract are going to have a hard time. Mahathir brought them in to boost the voting numbers and this is the price that has to be paid.

Singapore needs to learn from this as the foreign numbers. We already have 3 new citizens involved in terrorist activities.

The idea to overwhelm the Kadazhans who are not Muslims but this approach has changed the landscape dramatically. Yes, karma indeed.

Only a silly person will visit a resort there now. Their tourism industry is ruined.

In the 1980s, after Filipino pirates raided a Malaysian town, the Malaysian forces tracked the pirates back to their island hideout. The Malaysians stormed the island and killed everyone in the pirate village - men, women and children - not one was spared..... they then disposed of all the bodies.......

All the Philippine police found in that village were bits from a skull.....

The Philippine govt protested but the Malaysians denied everyhing..... however, it was a fact that peace reigned in that area for the next 20 plus years until the current troubles......

Was not aware of the incident. It tells you that in the part of the world, only certain solutions work. Basically uncharted territories and there is little central control.

At least 53 men women and kids were killed..... I don't think all were pirates....

Their bodies were never found...... Don't play play with the Malaysians.....they are good at this....

PM Razak arrived in Sabah for a state visit earlier in the day where he had announced a slew of security measures for the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esscom).

This, he had said, would include deploying Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad’s (MISC) container freighter, the MT Bunga Mas Lima, to Sabah, where it will serve as “mother ship” for maritime assets and personnel near the Philippines border.

The prime minister also stated that the vessel would be a forward operational base for intercepting cross-border criminals trying to flee to a neighbouring country after committing crime in the state.

Additionally, Najib added, two Petronas platforms were currently being modified and would be set up by year-end as the last line of defence between the Lahad Datu and Semporna waters.

Unlike the others the Philippines is a failed state. It has little or no control over much of its marginal areas. Asean as usual will avoid anything political no matter how big the elephant is in the room. They prefer to discuss economic cooperation.
