Corruption extends to medical studies in India

During his stay in India, Dr Berger also noted that medical students have to pay very large “donations” (perhaps US$200 000 or more, some 20 times the average doctor’s annual salary) to get into the “rapidly increasing number of private medical colleges” and to get on to sought after postgraduate training schemes.

This means that Indian doctors can have high levels of debt or family obligation when qualifying, which is a strong incentive against working as generalists in rural areas and favours them practising technological medicine for maximum profit in urban areas to try to recoup their investment.

Dr Berger also warned about other countries taking in doctors trained in India lacking in ethics:

Given that Singapore is also importing large number of doctors trained in India to work in Singapore’s healthcare institutions, it’s not known how many (if any) are similarly lacking in ethics or competency. Singapore Medical Council (SMC) should take note of Dr Berger’s article published in the prestigious British Medical Journal.

If even one Singaporean died due to the incompetency of a doctor poorly trained in India as described by Dr Berger, but was admitted by SMC nonetheless, then SMC should also be held accountable.

Problem is the rich can choose their own doctors but the poor cannot.

When LKY and LHL and their families are treated by doctors from India and Pinoyland, than its fair.

Nurses from India are also suspect. I heard that a few nurses, all Indian nationals, in a government hospital were recently discovered to have joined the service with fake degrees supplied by their agent in India. They were sacked but the media was not informed to save embarrassment for the HR as well as the government.

Medical Drs from 3rd world countries are all of lower standards...since singkieland is importing them in huge numbers it justshows how incompetent they are...such drs will cost the medical budget huge amounts as outpatient care n preventative medicine is more important than hospitals etc...anyway its better to die than to get sick. ..the sooner the people realise this the better as tat means they will be less controlled by the paps dodgy healthcare plans...

Doctors, nurses... they are all the same. We simply need to get them cheap and good. You mean you don't want cheap and good?

It is good enough I say, no need for extravagance when it comes to spending on the peasantry.

Logically if nurses were implicated, what are the chances of ah neh doctors holding fake degrees working in hospitals in sinkapoo? It is a chilling thought. The SMC should be held accountable and liable for negligence of such fake ah neh doctors. Every ah neh doctor now is a suspect. Do we have a right not to be attended to by ah neh doctor in SGH, CGH, etc?

Foreigners seeking medical treatment will not come to sinkapoo once the news is spread that there are fake ah neh doctors and nurses in the healthcare industry.
