NLB pulls two children’s books that ‘don’t promote family values’

National Library Board takes a strong pro-family stance in selecting books for young ones, says its chief librarian.SINGAPORE: The National Library Board (NLB) yanked two children’s book titles off its shelves on Tuesday (July 8), after complaints from a member of the public that the books did not promote family values.

The first book, And Tango Makes Three, features two male penguins which exhibit behaviours like a couple and successfully hatch and raise a young penguin, based on a true story of two male penguins in New York’s Central Park Zoo. The book has stirred similar controversy in the United States, with repeated calls for it to be banned from libraries.

The second, The White Swan Express, revolves around adoption of children and features a single mother and a lesbian couple among its characters.

In a post in the Facebook group We Are Against Pinkdot in Singapore, member Teo Kai Loon wrote that the NLB had replied to the complaints.

The letter, signed by Ms Tay Ai Cheng, the NLB’s assistant chief executive and chief librarian, said the library had withdrawn the two books. She also said the NLB takes a strong pro-family stance in selecting books for children.

She added that with a collection of more than five million books, it was an arduous task to ensure complete adherence. “However, when library visitors like yourself highlight to us any conflicting content within books, we review such books thoroughly and withdraw them from circulation,” she said.

Mr Teo said the response was swift, coming within two days. Such books, he said, should not be allowed to go under the radar. He also urged members to continue to scrutinise the library’s catalogues. “Remember, the onus is on us,” he added.

The Facebook post has since been removed.

The NLB’s move sparked concern among civil society activists here.

Ms Jolene Teo, programmes and communications senior manager at the Association of Women for Action and Research, said it was a shame that the NLB had taken such action.

“I think it is good for children to know that many different types of families exist, not just the one idealised family type of one man and one woman,” she said. “Being pro-family also means understanding that many family types do exist – from single-parent families to same-sex couples,” she added.

When contacted, the NLB said: “Young children are among our libraries’ most frequent visitors. Many of them browse books in our children’s sections on their own. As such, NLB takes a pro-family and cautious approach in identifying titles for our young visitors.” It did not respond to queries as to how many complaints were received about the titles and why the titles were offered in the first place.

Members of the arts community also expressed disappointment at the NLB’s actions.

Author Adeline Lee said: “Some parents may not be ready to answer questions that their children may have on the stories. Other parents or educators may welcome it as a chance to teach the children about something they find difficult to address. Writing to the NLB to request the books’ removal denies the latter group a coachable moment, so it is a pity.”

Author and storyteller Verena Tay said what the NLB was doing “was affecting the state of what children are reading”. She added: “I don’t think those in the ‘conservative camp’ would like it if their books were banned one day as well.”

The books are to be read by human children.. not little penguins

Yah, but the story is about 2 penguins, not 2 humans, and based on a true story from the New York zoo. You wanna lie to children about homosexuality in animals? Must as well lie to them that hermaphrodites like earthworms don't exist!

in the new york zoo, they had little to no choice but to fall for each other as they could hardly find their own kind with a vagina. good thing they didn't jump their enclosure and fucked up the lonely bear.

I learnt a lesson about work ethics from 3 Little pigs, humility in Aesop's fables and dishonesty pays in Puss in boots.

Last thing I want any impressionable child to learn is that 2 males and an adopted hatchling makes a perfectly normal family unit.

It is quite obvious that various church lobby groups (e.g. the one led by Lawrence Khong) have been applying pressure to the National Library Board to do their bidding. The emotional appeal of 'won't you please think of the children?' is quite effective to twist the arm of governing authorities.

Today it is about homosexuality. Tomorrow it may be about some other politically incorrect subject.

All these are the results of stupid religions. We should ban all religions. Especially Abrahamic Religions.

FYI (SBY forums):
The physiologic role of same sex couples in rescuing abandoned foetuses/ children from harm.

Same sex relationship may at times have useful physiological functions: e.g. to help bring up orphaned/ abandoned kids?

Consequent to the fame of "And Tango Makes Three" whose 'noterity' stems from a ban by NLB, I decide to check out the non-fiction story of Roy and Silo (born 1987): male chinstrap penguins the main protagonists of the book "And Tango Makes Three". "They were noted by staff at the zoo in 1998 to be performing mating rituals, although no actual sexual acts were witnessed, and in 1999 attempted to hatch a rock as if it were an egg. This inspired zoo keepers to give them an egg from another pair of penguins who could not hatch it, resulting in the couple raising a chick which was named Tango."

I am thus persuaded to wonder if the 'homosexuality'* that the penguins portrayed were natural instincts developed to rescue abandoned eggs/chicks from irresponsible/ hype-reproductive heterosexual parents. Most penguin couples I know can only incubate one egg at a time: it gets confusing when there are egg twins. (With the 'unwanted' usually being just abandoned for dead).

This form of infantile homosexuality/ cohabitation of a NON-SEXUAL nature (just as kindergarten kids hold hands, share and love each other) is probably a natural developmental process with variations in-between (e.g. prolonged homosexuality of Roy and Silo to bring up an abandoned penguin egg): but which ended subsequently once their contribution to penguin society was complete.

I thus conclude that if cohabitation has any physiological purpose, it is to fill the gap left by heterosexual parents UNABLE to perform their rightful duties either due to handicapped or malice (e.g.: lust for quikie sex but do not want kids) and a repository of love/relationship as a precursor to finding an ideal partner of the opposite sex just a single sex schools improve focus on an ideal by excepting the BGR distraction from school work during a student's junior years. Or NSmen have same sex (male buddies) assigned during NS sleep in the same room or on 2 levels of a double decker bed. Or 2 same-sex foreign talents in Singapore share the same rental room due to rental $$$affordability reasons.

In accordance with current Singapore laws and also Abrahamic/ Christian abhorrence for homosexual sex, I also abhor 'carnal knowledge' between same sex individuals.

However, in so far as the lack of love by heterosexual couples as manifest by the high abortion rate in Singapore goes (10,000 foetus p.a./ 1/4 of ALL local pregnancies), I believe that same sex couples (as does everyone else) do have a BIG part to play where the rescue of abandoned foetus and children is concerned.

Of course a strong measure of supervision is necessary for such adoption/ fostering schemes to work (especially for same sex couples with zero child rearing experience), however, in view of the shrinking local population and the paradoxically stratospheric abortion rate in Singapore, I believe that the need to rescue abandoned foetuses/children from harm is urgent of not desperate.

If those who happen to cohabit also have the heart to save another human life, who is society to criticise???!!!

'homosexuality'* within the context of this essay STRICTLY DEFINED as a cohabitation type relationship between same sex individuals WITHOUT any elements of carnal knowledge/ homosexual sexual-activity being involved.

I remember when Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code came out (movie and book), there were quite a number of churches who were petitioning for it to be banned for blaspheming against the divinity of Jesus Christ.

That case was frivolous.
The difference here is that this is a children's book after all.

True! children are innocent we should not corrupt them and teach them the wrong values like stealing and killing! Even though is our nature to steal and kill!

Which many of the classic fairy tales books do impart.

Like Goldilocks and the 3 bears, breaking and entering. Stealing porridge, sleeping in the teddy bears bed and destruction of private property breaking of the youngest teddy bear chair!

Hansel and Gretel, STEALING FROM AND killing the old witch! 2nd Degree Manslaughter!!

Jack and Bean stalk, Stealing of the Giant Property, Hen the lays the golden eggs and first degree murder by chopping down the beanstalk leading to the death of the Giant!

This is what we are teaching our kids in this fallen Secular World. All WRONG VALUES!!!

NLB pulls two children’s books that ‘don’t promote family values’

Congrats to the NLB for being vigilant against these faggots.

Singapore should never go down the dangerous path by allowing these faggots to destroy society through subversive means.

In the West, faggots are pushing for governments to have such books for children to be made accessible in school and public libraries in their bid to brainwash young, impressionable children that being a faggot and wanting to use anuses as pseudo-vaginas is normal and that a child with two fathers or two mothers is "normal".
