Quote:Jobseekers should stop focusing on salary hikes.

Singapore’s job market remains robust, but inflated salary expectations are keeping a number of Singaporeans from securing their next jobs.

According to the latest Hays Quarterly Report, jobseekers should focus on long-term career development over short-term salary hikes.

“Singapore’s jobs market is positive and employers are hiring, but while there is a shortage of high-level skills employers will only increase salaries so far to secure their ideal candidate,” says Chris Mead, Regional Director of Hays in Singapore.

Here’s more:

Project Accountants, Quantity Surveyors and Transport Planners are just some of the professionals in high demand, but inflated salary expectations are pricing some Singaporeans out of securing their next job, says recruiting experts Hays.

“Many professionals spent the last quarter holding out for their bonuses and are now preparing to enter the jobs market. We advise them to focus on securing a job with greater responsibility and regional exposure which will provide long-term benefits to your career, rather than solely focusing on financial rewards.”

According to Hays, many departments are seeing jobs growth. “Accountancy teams are growing in size and the banking sector is adding both temporary and permanent staff,” says Chris. “There are technical skills shortages across engineering, IT, insurance, procurement and oil & gas, to name a few. HR is also an active area for jobs as organisations expand, restructure or up-skill existing workers.”

I fully agree that sinkies expect far too much when it comes to salaries.

They have to realise that it is not the employer's responsibility to fund their extravagant lifestyles. There is no point hiring someone who costs more than than what they bring to the table.

Hays make money when companies hire ...so the more churn there is, the better for them. You can thus dismiss the analysis given by Hays.

If the government stops foreigners from getting hired here, companies will have to pay up. Foreigners have depressed salaries here.
Alternatively, the government can make hiring foreigners as costly as hiring sinkees. Companies will stop hiring foreigners.

We don't need foreigners. Period. All the PAP BS got to stop.

U can hire foreigner PMET CHEAPLY in Sinkapoor too: no need any work permit, no need to pay employer CPF levy contribution, no need worry about NS liabilities: so CAN SAVE UP TO 17% of labour costs by choosing a foreigner PMET over a Sinkie:...

By a remorseful Sinkie whose job was to save $$$ for company by pwning Sinkies.., yet now feelimg remorseful/guilty as he sees so many pitiful Sinkies around him.
Local PMEs don't have it easy

I REFER to the report ("MPs want more protection, support for local PMEs"; Tuesday)
When I was the general manager of a local IT company and, subsequently, a financial controller for a Dutch multinational corporation, I preferred hiring foreign mid-level staff for the following reasons:
- The company did not need to pay CPF contributions for them;
- Their salary expectations were lower than Singaporeans'; and
- Their skill sets and experiences were on a par with those of Singaporeans.

The total cost differential between local and foreign professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) was 20 to 40 per cent.
An Asian foreign employee with a degree and work experience can easily afford a city apartment and family sedan in his home country if he makes $200,000 during his stint here.
In Singapore, $200,000 would allow a Singaporean with the same qualifications to buy only a three-room HDB flat in outlying regions like Woodlands or Jurong. A family car would set him back by $120,000.
An Asian foreigner's cost of living back home is so much lower than ours. Hence, he is more willing to work for $3,000 to $5,000 a month. But a Singaporean graduate earning $4,000 a month will be trying to keep up with inflation.
It does not make sense that a foreign PME working here has a bright future, while his Singaporean counterparts are struggling with their living expenses, unless they are in strong sectors like banking and health care, where pay is high.
A levy is imposed when one hires a maid, but there is no such tax for hiring foreign PMEs. No wonder foreign PMEs were replacing local ones at an increasing rate until tighter restrictions were imposed last year.
At the moment, the local PME retrenchment rate is still high as employers are hiring foreigners for the cost savings.
Over the medium to long term, this will weaken Singapore's economy as local PMEs will become structurally unemployed as they lose their skills and employability.

FTs from poor countries accept lower pay simply think of conversion S$ to rupiah which will benefit them.

There is no free lunch and they are not stupid either.

It is the SINgaporeans, who are stupid who voted for a government, who let in these people who insult our own workers & these voters serve NS too. Hays, should be tar & feathered....we have the highest paid politicians on this earth, even those useless ones are still around drawing obscene ones, plus retired, & even expiring soon ones. How can we, SINgapore workers expect lower salary?, we need to pay these poor politicians who come at a bargain, we need to feed ourselves & family & housing at SINgapore prices, not Indonesia, Philippines or Malaysia etc prices!!

If people like Hays, cannot pay these kind of wages & want to exploit cheap labours, f#@@%k off somewhere, like PRC. Vietnam etc...he can o Japan & say the same thing here... the Japs will tell him to f$%$% off!

Sinkies deserve it for letting themselves be screwed. Not sure they learnt anything yet.

Sounds nice, except that there's probably no long-term career development too.

By the way, why are these 'recruitment consultancy agencies' constantly dishing out their 'pearls of wisdom' to the media instead of focusing on matching jobs for jobseekers? Kelly Services is another one I can think of who constantly does this.

FTs pay not low, many ah neh even applying for Visa card and even American Express credit card during the road show at Raffles place.
Their pay can meet the minimum criteria one. Of coz some credit card companies don't give the shit about following MAS regulations.

Anyone can apply for a basic credit card these days. It's no longer a status symbol or a sign of exclusive privilege.

Singapore is a money laundering hub, and interest rates are kept low to facilitate borrowing and lending. Obviously, this extends to consumers and retail banking. Consumer debt generates revenue for the banks.

In the early days of N.S., we lost out to the females here in terms of years, then the Malaysians Males & Females, who flooded the job market, while the SINkee males have to serve reservists after N.S., & face rigid rules & regulations, that included in-camp training ( only those elite gets exemption) & IPPT etc...

Yet...these numbskulls voted for the same people for decades who not only screwed them, but continue to screw their descendants too.

These cockroaches are definitely not stupid. They accepted lower wages but this is offset by MCs, child care leave, coupled with their annual leaves to constantly go back home, and make baby cockroaches, after return take pre and post MCs for checking cockroaches womb and take maternity leaves. After maternity leaves, again take MCs for post natal
