Agree. But the fault lies with the persistent cover-ups over the decades by the Catholic Church worldwide whenever reports of paedophilia were filed in Europe and America. Some of these involved senior members of the clergy. To my knowledge, many were not prosecuted or defrocked, but simply transferred out from their parish and reassigned to a less conspicuous position.

My theory is that when you're gay in a conservative, homophobic society, it would be more socially acceptable to become a priest or monk than to remain a bachelor your life and have people question your sexuality till you die. Moreover, some of these people may actually have believed that celibate religion may help them overcome the temptation of homosexuality (remember, there's a lot of guilt attached to 'sin' of homosexuality in deeply religious societies in Southern Europe and South America).
And it is precisely because the church has not done anything substantial against paedophilic activity that they're viewed as hypocritical and only paying lip service to their anti-gay stance.

A test is available now. The Catholic church should implement it immediately on all new and existing clergy. It's called a Penile Plethysmograph.
