PM Lee and Najib to start leaders' retreat in Singapore on Monday
PUBLISHED ON MAY 3, 2015 6:01 PM

BY WALTER SIM

SINGAPORE - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will be in Singapore on Monday and Tuesday for a leaders' retreat with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The regular meetings between the premiers have yielded major agreements in recent years, including an ambitious high-speed rail link that will slash travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to just 90 minutes by 2020.

The agenda this year, which also marks the 50th anniversary of Singapore-Malaysia ties, is likely to include further discussions on the project, which was first announced during the 2013 retreat.

Singapore has said it will announce the location of its high- speed rail terminal at this retreat. Three sites have been shortlisted - Jurong East, Tuas West and the city centre.

PM Lee said last week when he officiated at the opening of the new chancery of the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur: "If we can get the high-speed rail going and running, this will be a very important project which will foster closer ties between our people.

"And then we can come up, have lunch and go back down to Singapore again."

Malaysia is siting its terminus within the Bandar Malaysia project, which will transform the old Sungei Besi area - 3km from Kuala Lumpur's financial district - into a dynamic, connected township.

The leaders' retreat, which has been held annually since 2012, is regarded by both countries as a sign of the strong rapport between the two leaders.

"The annual leaders' retreat is a key bilateral platform for the Prime Ministers to drive relations forward," said Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

PM Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, will be hosted to a private dinner by PM Lee and Mrs Lee on Monday.

On Tuesday, the two premiers and their respective delegations will meet for bilateral talks, and will discuss ways to further enhance cooperation across a wide range of areas.

PM Najib will also deliver a keynote address on Tuesday night at the Economic Society of Singapore's annual dinner at the Shangri-La Hotel, which PM Lee will be attending.

During the retreat, PM Lee will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs.

The Singapore delegation includes Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang; Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim; Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan; Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen; Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan; Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law K Shanmugam; Minister for Transport and Lui Tuck Yew; Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Lawrence Wong; and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Masagos Zulkifli.

Expecting announcement of Jurong East as HSR terminal in Singapore. Don't think Malaysia will have any concrete things to announce, given its political and financial situations. Malaysia is likely to propose a new bridge to replace the causeway.

Read that thailand is also planning for speed trains within their country. Hope they plan to connect it to KL. Life would be so wonderful by then..

Announcing the location for the HSR terminal on SG's side actually do not means much, just that provision and land reserved will be allocated for the project.
Similarly, the RTS terminal on SG's side was also announced long ago to be next to the Woodlands North MRT station but to date, JB has still not decided on their terminal location or the implementation of the project!

Read the news carefully :

The initial target of completion of the High Speed Rail project - which was the year 2020 - needs to be re-assessed due to the scale and complexity of the project, said the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia.
No new time frame has been provided.

NO NEW TIME FRAME HAS BEED PROVIDED!!!!

Just as I expected and had mentioned earlier, its a political correct way to tell you that the project will be delayed indefinitely!

SINGAPORE, May 5 — Singapore and Malaysia are reassessing a 2020 target for the completion of a high-speed rail project linking the two countries because of the scale and complexity of the venture.

A new timeline will be available by the end of the year, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said at a joint press conference with his Malaysian counterpart Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the city state today. The initial target needs to be studied as it will take at least two years to design and put out tenders for the project and another five for construction, Najib said.

The proposed rail line linking Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will reduce the 300-kilometre journey over land to 90 minutes from about five hours. Leaders of the two countries announced in 2013 the rail link may be completed by the end of this decade, with Najib calling it a “huge game changer” that will transform the way the neighbours do business.

The link would have a similar distance as New York to Washington. Malaysia’s Land Public Transport Commission chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said last year that the high-speed rail link may miss a 2020 deadline even after using government land as much as possible to avoid property-acquisition disputes.

Singapore and Malaysia need to decide on operational issues such as who will own and run the trains, as well as iron out details including engineering and financial issues, Lee said today. — Bloomberg

So one more connection from Spore to Johore. No need traffic jams. Just take HSR to Nusajaya.
One stop is not going to cost a lot.

Actually the yellow and blue Causeway Link bus from Jurong East or Boon Lay express all the way to Bukit Indah also no traffic jam, very fast and comfortable - only S$4.00!!
Better still, you can drop off anywhere along the route.

In other news, the developers near the causeway are still telling their buyers that the RTS will be 5 mins away from the condo they are buying. When asked how soon will the announcement for RTS be made and estimated completion, the salesman immediately replied he suddenly had a stomachache and needed to go toilet.

Get ready to hoot KL condo!

Hoot only after they finalised all the complex details and bilateral agreements on the system and ready to call tender lah, they say at least in 2 years time, so earliest will be by 2017, if some delay here and there, 2018 or 2019 otherwise, 2025 or later!

I think if no come over to JB, better still. No jams, no time wasted, no spending money...but you got only 2 bridges...unless there's a 3rd bridge for yellow and blue bus.

LOL! Hope that I could live long enough to ride it!

The ways SG and MY conduct biz are poles apart. To get the poles to meet is easier said than done, though not impossible. Hopefully, by the time both come to agreement, the technology originally planned for is not obsolete, or the budget does not get blown out of proportion. For retiree like me, I have plenty of time (no money), the cheap (MY plate) 4 wheels are more reliable:biggrin:.
