In Singapore's case, it is shady because it's done clandestinely. The Lee family took pains to hide the fact that it is dealing with a military regime that the whole world frowns upon and which heavy sanctions were being imposed. Singapore on the surface supports the world's call for the Myanmar army to stop abusing human rights and take the democratic path. But under the table, it was massively selling arms to them. Little wonder that their army generals chose to educate their children here and checked into our hospitals for treatment. How's that for a government which the Old Fart described as having 100% integrity.
The Western Nations who impose sanctions on Myanmar are nothing but cowards and bullies. Myanmar is of little economic significance to them so they can get on their high horse to preach human rights.
When it comes to human rights violations, China is up there with the best but the West conveniently overlooks this fact because there is big money to be made trading with China.
NZ is exactly the same when it comes to this sort of hypocrisy. It imposes sanctions on Fiji because it is not a democracy while it signs trade deals with China because it is a huge market for NZ dairy and meat. China isn't a democracy either but $$$$ overrides this fact.
I see nothing wrong with Singapore selling arms to a fellow Asean Nation. SEA nations should help each other as we part of the same community. To hell with the West and its hypocritical sanctions.

sg was doing the world a favor by engaging the junta and helping burma with economic development when most of the world avoided dealings with her. the u.s. pretended as if burma faced a trade embargo and u.s. scorn, but the dea were secretly involved with the junta in the drug trade and the cia were aiding and funding separatist and rebel groups and at the same time facilitating security by aiding the junta for unocal to tap energy sources and build a pipeline there. isolating a military regime encourages bad behavior to become worst. while sg was investing in civilian projects there, u.s. agencies were wasting taxpayers' money on covert nefarious activities that brought in more weapons and munitions to fighting factions and death and destruction to innocent civilians.
