We've got more news on the Lexus NX, the firm's new premium SUV set to do battle with the likes of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Firstly, we know it'll look nothing like the controversial LF-NX concept, but instead like the one in the pictures above. In fact, exactly like the one in the pictures above because that's the production Lexus NX.

There's the huge Lexus face, flared arches, 17/18in wheels, L-shape combination rear lights and echoes of the spindle grille at the back, too. Distinctive, isn't it? It's certainly a more refreshing SUV to look at - you won't mistake this for any of the anodyne Germans.

Dimensions are those of the X3 and Q5 - it measures 4630mm long, 1845mm wide and 1645 high.

But the more important news is the announcement of a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that will debut in the new NX. It features direct injection and variable valve timing with the ability to run on the efficient Akinson cycle at light load. At full bore, the water cooling of the integrated exhaust manifold also reduces consumption.

Power sits at 235bhp between 4,800rpm and 5,600rpm, while its peak torque figure of 258lb ft comes in low at 1,650rpm, tailing off at 4,000rpm.

There's no performance figures to hand as yet, but in the UK this engine will be paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and a mechanical four-wheel-drive system, badged up as a NX 200t F Sport AWD.

Another version we'll see is the familiar hybrid one, using Lexus's 2.5-litre lump, a generator, motor and battery. This NX 300h will produce a total of 195bhp, though emissions will slip under 120g/km of CO2, and fuel economy is being targeted at 54.3mpg.

This hybrid version will also come with specific chassis settings, including new adaptive sprung-weight dampers for better ride quality.
Considering the X3 is sold only as a diesel SUV, Lexus makes no mention of a diesel in the NX line-up, but it doesn't see the point, considering the economy of this hybrid more or less tees up with the Germans, and boasts significantly lower CO2 emissions. Plus, the diesel market is a European thing, and this will be a global car.

Otherwise you get the choice of new adaptive dampers, along with a full-range panoramic monitor, and adaptive cruise control. There are other systems on board too, such as lane departure alert, a blind spot monitor and a head-up display.

The interior - complete with that thick-rimmed steering wheel, contrast textures and quilted seat upholstery - looks like a plush, pleasant environment too, and rear passenger head room's excellent. We know 'cause we've just sat in it. Luggage space for UK cars won't be as much as the 555 litres Lexus claims, but that's because in the UK people insist on a space-saver spare wheel not a tyre-fix kit.

There are no prices for the turbo, which comes a month or two later. But the 300h base model FWD is £29,495, the. AWD starts at £31,495, topping out at £42,995. All models get LED headlights as well as daytime running lights and adaptive cruise control.

So, what do you reckon? Being an SUV, it's tipped to take up a large chunk of Lexus sales, and the likelihood is this is the Lexus you'll see on the roads more than any other of their models. But would you consider one over the German efforts?

Macan is about the same size, slightly more expensive, much better when it comes to performance but far less reliable in comparison.

2015 Porsche Macan S

At first glance, it's easy to confuse the Macan for the larger Cayenne. Put them side by side, however, and it's clear just how much smaller the Macan is overall. | June 16, 2014 | Scott Jacobs for Edmunds

2015 Porsche Macan S Long-Term Road Test: Introduction

June 17, 2014

What Did We Get?

A white 2015 Porsche Macan S. It's Porsche's newest SUV. Measuring just over 110 inches between the wheels and 184.3 inches overall, the compact Macan slots below the Cayenne in both size and price. Main competitors for the Macan include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti QX70 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.

The Macan S is the base model. It comes with a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 rated at 340 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, dubbed "PDK" in Porsche-speak, is standard, along with all-wheel drive. For those who want more than 340 hp in their urban grocery getter, there's the Macan Turbo. It features a larger 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 rated at 400 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

What Options Does It Have?
As with all Porsches, the Macan's options list is extensive. We exercised some restraint, which means we only spent an extra $11,470. That's on top of the base price of a Macan S, which stands at $49,900. Yes, the Macan starts at less than $50K, but the chances of finding a Macan with no options is zero. Plus, there's that little issue of the unavoidable destination fee of $995.

For our $11 grand and change we got a couple packages and a handful of stand-alone options. The $2,990 Infotainment package adds a 7-inch TFT display with navigation, a 40MB hard drive and the increasingly less useful CD/DVD player. It also includes a satellite radio tuner, HD radio and various apps like AHA radio. The $2,590 Premium package adds heated seats front and rear, park assist radar front and rear, auto-dimming mirrors and the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System. That's a fancy name for adaptive headlights and washer nozzles.

In the high-dollar stand-alone category we added things like the 20-inch SportDesign Wheels ($1,260), a Bose Premium audio system ($1,400) and a carbon-fiber interior package ($1,490). Lesser options include Lane Change Assist ($690), a heated multifunction sport steering wheel with carbon-fiber trim ($615), rear window shades ($250) and, of course, Porsche crest center caps for the wheels ($185).

Final tally: $62,365.

Why Did We Get It?
It's the second coming of the end of the world. Purists feared that the Cayenne was going to destroy Porsche after all. Instead, it likely saved the company from extinction.

If Porsche managed to squeeze everything that's good about the Cayenne into the more manageable Macan, then it will likely have the same level of success, if not more.

The real question with the Macan is whether it's a tall sports car or a shrunken SUV. Those hoping for the former might be pleasantly surprised, while buyers hoping for the latter might find it lacking in utility. We have 12 months to find out where the Macan stands and which camp will like it better.
Check our Long-Term Road Test Page often for new updates as we put the 2015 Porsche Macan S through its paces over the next 12 months and 20,000 miles.

Edmunds purchased this vehicle for purposes of evaluation.

Hybrid very quiet but battery is super expensive. The cost of hybrid battery can be about 10-20% of the car price in Aust/NZ because car is cheaper in ANZ. Usually, you need to 2 changes of battery within 10 years for big countries like Aust/NZ. So take the cost of battery into consideration before choosing hybrid cars.

Due to the above issue, hybrid did not succeed in Singapore in the past 10 years. Now, Borneo gives 10-years hybrid battery warranty now (max 1 claim from year 6 onwards).

Go for the hybrid. It has a smaller carbon footprint.

I am no SUV fan, but am eying the Honda Accord hybrid. It's already the best selling sedan in California. And they are leading the world in environment policies.

Cheers!

If die die want enviroment friendly car go for hybrid.
If want cost over 10 year. Then you have to take into consideration
1. Tax rebate for electric/hybrid car. Some country hybrid is about same or cheaper due to it tax structure>> so depending on which country tax system
2. Driving style or habbit. Long distance none stop then go for normal fuel car. Short distance or in city a lot of traffic then better choose hybrid even cost about 10% more.

the 2015 lexus nx looks very much like the 2014 toyota rav4. it may actually be based on the same frame and chassis. if you're looking at a small suv, check out the bmw x1. my friend who would buy nothing but toyota has just committed to the x1 - 4wd, 2-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged to give him about 235ish hp. no hybrid. but gas mileage is 33 mpg. he's happy as he can go up the mountain without chains to ski during winter. there's a diff between awd and 4wd. 4wd has better traction and control when on ice and snow.

Leongsam, I drove a Camry Hybrid for 2 years and I have to say I like hybrid for its quietness and fuel saving and also when you need some extra power when both engine and motor kicks in its quite a kick. Moreover Toyota gives 10 years warranty for the battery so its a pretty good deal.

The NX looks like a small SUV compare to the RX. I really like the new front grille design known as spindle grille which was first seen in Lexus concept car the LF-G and first production car to have this is the GS. Now its in all models. I like it so much that when the facelift RX came up with this design I could not wait for the all new model which is not due for another two years so I traded the three year old white RX with this handsome machine, guess I was also tired of the white color

I hope the new RX will very different from the current.

you need to look at the tesla model s torque, hp, and 0-60 acceleration before talking shit about electric cars. the model s can outperform a porche midrange easily. the porche panamera model that cums close is the gts.
