Rooney is fast approaching his use by date so its a doubly good move. Bring in Cavani and offload Rooney especially since Rooney is on such high wages.

Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger in Manchester United's sights as Louis van Gaal looks to tempt Bayern Munich pair
Van Gaal prefers Schweinsteiger to Bayern team-mate Toni Kroos

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-Manchester-Uniteds-sights.html#ixzz34lE8jxgm

Manchester United have set their sights on raiding Bayern Munich and will try to lure Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
United have a long list of transfer targets as they attempt to get back into the Champions League and will test the German title winners' resolve with big-money offers for their stars.

It is understood incoming United manager Louis van Gaal prefers Schweinsteiger to German team mate Toni Kroos and despite his denials, Robben could also be lured to Old Trafford after the World Cup.

Holland boss Van Gaal doesn’t have to go too far to talk to Robben about the move, of course.

And any switch would mean Wayne Rooney possibly being a peripheral player at United next season – and having to look elsewhere for regular football.

Belgium show Manchester United how to use Fellaini

425028_heroa.jpg

Jun 17, 2014 9:50:00 PM

The much-maligned midfielder emerged from the bench to change the course of the game against Algeria, revelling in a role much more suited to his talents

By Ben Hayward at the Estadio Mineirao

Marouane Fellaini was a happy man. After a difficult season at Manchester United, the midfielder was forced to begin Belgium's World Cup campaign on the bench on Tuesday, but it was his introduction which changed the course of the game against Algeria. Without him, all looked lost.

Much maligned at Old Trafford, Fellaini is a cult hero for Belgium fans. Many wore wigs in tribute to the 26-year-old's astonishing afro; others sang songs in his honour before kick-off. They loved him before the match. Now they adore him.

Belgium had been tipped to make waves at this World Cup, their first since 2002, but Marc Wilmots' men made hard work of the first half and found themselves behind after Jan Vertonghen gave away a needless penalty and Valencia's Sofiane Feghouli converted from the spot.

Algeria's disciplined defence dealt comfortably with the Europeans after that and unsurprisingly, the ineffective Nacer Chadli was replaced at half-time by Dries Mertens. Striker Romelu Lukaku was withdrawn next, short of the hour mark, having failed to touch the ball a single time inside the Algeria area.

But it was the third substitution which woke up Belgium. Mousa Dembele departed and Fellaini came on to line up alongside Axel Witsel in midfield and the Manchester United man immediately improved the Red Devils - something which wasn't said very often at his club last season.

Fall guy | Fellaini flopped in a deeper role for United last season

Fellaini adopted the role of a central striker when Belgium had the ball and dropped deep into midfield when Algeria were in possession. His aerial and physical presence clearly unsettled the North Africans and the more direct approach soon paid dividends as the 26-year-old headed home Kevin De Bruyne's superb cross to equalise after 70 minutes.

And 10 minutes later, the comeback was complete. De Bruyne won back possession, Eden Hazard advanced and squared for Mertens to smash home the winner in a hard-fought 2-1 success. It was harsh on Algeria, but Belgium's quality eventually told.

None of it would have happened, however, without Fellaini.

"I was on the bench but that's the coach's decision," he said after the game. "We have a lot of great players. I was happy to score the goal. It was a great cross from De Bruyne and it gave us confidence. We found our rhythm much more after that.

"At the moment I am just focused on Belgium and I'm happy to have scored."

De Bruyne, who played a pivotal part in both goals, was named man of the match, but it was Fellaini who changed the game, with Algeria noticeably ruffled as soon as he was introduced.

"We had some difficulties and were taking too many touches of the ball," Hazard said. "Algeria are a solid team and they made it really difficult, but after Marouane's goal we were much better. The equaliser changed the game."Afterwards, former England striker Gary Lineker joked on Twitter: "Manchester United should sign the Fellaini that plays for Belgium."

At Old Trafford, the 26-year has often been used just in front of the defence. He is no deep-lying playmaker, however, and that showed. His poor performances last season and the fact United had paid Everton €32 million for his services saw the midfielder widely ridiculed by fans of rival clubs as the team toiled and ended up in seventh spot.

But Tuesday's cameo proved he can be extremely effective when utilised correctly. At Everton, he hit 12 goals in 36 appearances from an attacking midfield position in 2012-13 (compared to none in 21 games last term). There, his aerial ability and impressive movement caused problems aplenty for rival defences, just as it did at the Mineirao on Tuesday.

So Belgium showed Manchester United just what they were missing - and whether Fellaini stays or leaves Old Trafford this summer, he'll surely be restored to his rightful role next season.

Sneijder: I would consider United move
Dutch midfielder reveals he would consider a move this summer if Louis van Gaal asked him to move to Old Trafford

Wesley Sneijder admits the chance to join up with Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United might be too good to turn down.

Sneijder, who was linked with a move to Old Trafford in 2011, is part of Van Gaal's Netherlands squad at the World Cup.

And the 30-year-old midfielder said he would be tempted to leave Galatasaray if United, and Van Gaal, made him an offer this summer.

Sneijder said: "He trains his players very hard and always expects the highest standards.

"I am happy at Galatasaray. I have established myself at the club and have settled in.

"However, if Van Gaal were make me an offer I would have to at least consider it.

"Nobody from the Netherlands can simply reject Van Gaal.

"In the Netherlands Van Gaal is something like the head teacher of a school.

"Not everyone is lucky enough to get into his good books."

Fixtures analysis: Van Gaal handed comfortable start to United career

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.../manchester-united-fixtures-louis-van-7284931

Dutchman has nothing to fear in United's opening games - a year after David Moyes hinted at a Premier League conspiracy.

This time last year, David Moyes was pulling his hair out. It's unlikely that his successor Louis van Gaal will have the same reaction when he glances at the Premier League fixture list.

When Moyes saw that his new United side was to play Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in their first five games of last season, he hinted at a conspiracy.

Manchester United Premier League fixtures 2014/15 (start)

Sat 16 Aug 2014 - Premier League
Man Utd v Swansea 15:00
Sat 23 Aug 2014 - Premier League
Sunderland v Man Utd 15:00
Sat 30 Aug 2014 - Premier League
Burnley v Man Utd 15:00
Sat 13 Sep 2014 - Premier League
Man Utd v QPR 15:00

"I find it hard to believe that's the way the balls came out of the bag, that's for sure," he said.

"I think it's the hardest start for 20 years that Manchester United have had.

"I hope it's not because Manchester United won the league quite comfortably last year that the fixtures have been made much more difficult."

Van Gaal has little reason to be quite so upset.

United face Swansea at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season on August 16 - a reverse of last season's opening game at the Liberty Stadium.

It's followed by games against Sunderland (a), Burnley (a), QPR (h), Leicester (a) and West Ham (h).

United will play Newcastle at home on Boxing Day, Stoke away on New Year's Day and travel to Hull on the final day of the season on May 24.

United's run-in is more daunting with games against Liverpool (a) Manchester City (h), Chelsea (a), Everton (a) and Arsenal (h) in their final nine games.

The first Manchester derby will be at the Etihad Stadium on November 1. The derby at Old Trafford has been scheduled for April 11.

United do have other tricky spells to negotiate. They face a run of Chelsea (h), City (a), Crystal Palace and Arsenal (a) in the space of four games in October and November.

The busy Christmas schedule includes games against Aston Villa (a), Newcastle (h), Tottenham (h) and Stoke (a).

Ander Herrera: Man Utd set to sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder

By Simon Stone
BBC Sport

Manchester United are set to sign £30m-rated Ander Herrera from La Liga club Athletic Bilbao.
The Premier League club failed to buy the Spanish midfielder, 24, on transfer deadline day last summer.
But new United boss Louis van Gaal has revived the deal, which could be completed as early as Tuesday.

Man Utd's most expensive buys
£37.1m: Juan Mata (from Chelsea) 2014

£30.75m: Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham) 2008

£29.1m: Rio Ferdinand (Leeds) 2002

£27.5m: Marouane Fellaini (Everton) 2013

£27m: Wayne Rooney (Everton) 2004

Herrera, part of Spain's Olympic squad at London 2012, would become Van Gaal's first signing since the Dutchman replaced David Moyes as boss in June.

Until the arrival of Marouane Fellaini from Everton last summer, United had not signed a central midfield player for six years.

However, with the Belgian failing to score a single goal last season and Ryan Giggs deciding to retire to become Van Gaal's assistant, United appear keen to strengthen.

United encountered problems trying to sign Herrera almost a year ago, namely when three imposters turned up at La Liga headquarters in an attempt push through the transfer without the knowledge of either club.
In the end, Herrera remained at Bilbao.

United are set to pay about £30m for Herrera, whose transfer fee was due to rise on 30 June under the terms of his contract.

With Antonio Valencia and Patrice Evra both signing contract extensions, Van Gaal is already starting to put his mark on the squad, even though he is currently manager of the Netherlands.

The Dutch are through to the last 16 of the World Cup after topping their group with three wins
As yet, there has been no fresh bid for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, who was the subject of a big-money offer from United prior to England's dismal World Cup campaign.

In the meantime, a fee has reportedly been agreed between United and Dynamo Moscow for left-back Alexander Buttner, with some minor contractual issues to be sorted out.
United are due to tour the United States later this month before opening their Premier League campaign against Swansea on 16 August.

Juventus face £30m test for Arturo Vidal as Man Utd plot THIRD summer deal
MANCHESTER UNITED are preparing to test Juventus' resolve over keeping Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal by launching a £30m bid this summer.

Reports in Italy suggest the Old Trafford side are ready to spend more of their £200m warchest with a big money deal for the 27-year-old.

It was revealed earlier today that Louis Van Gaal had secured his first signing of the summer by completing a deal for Spanish Ander Herrera.

And it's also understood that a deal for Southampton star Luke Shaw is close, with a medical scheduled for later this week.

United were put on alert by the midfielder this month after he revealed he could be ready to leave Juve after the World Cup.

"Will I stay at Juventus? I do not know," he told Sky Italia.

Luke Shaw: Man Utd expected to sign defender after medical

_75871139_lukeshaw_ap.jpg

Southampton and England defender Luke Shaw is expected to sign for Manchester United following a medical, reports BBC Radio Solent.

United made a bid of £27m for the 18-year-old left-back in May, but the offer was rejected.

It is believed a fee may now have been agreed, with a medical scheduled.

Shaw became the youngest player to feature at the 2014 World Cup when he played the full game in England's 0-0 draw with Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Earlier on Thursday, United confirmed the signing of Spain midfielder Ander Herrera, 24, from Athletic Bilbao for a fee believed to be £29m.
