SINGAPORE - Restaurant worker who groped three women on Sentosa in less than two months was jailed for seven months last Friday.
Mohd Firdaus A. Rahman, 29, told police he did it after feeling a "sudden urge", the court heard.
He had admitted to two charges of molesting a 30-year-old woman and a 19-year-old girl on the island on Nov 23 and Christmas Day last year respectively.
Two other charges - using criminal force to steal the teenager's cellphone and molesting a third woman - were taken into consideration.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Norine Tan Yan Ling said the first victim was walking along the bridge near Merlion Plaza when she suddenly felt Firdaus grabbing her breasts from behind.
He told her: "Give me this, give me this."
While struggling to break free, she fell backwards and lost her balance. Firdaus then ran off.
At about 1.30 am on Dec 25, the second victim was walking on the pathway near Merlion Plaza when Firdaus suddenly approached her and said "hi" before molesting her.
She screamed for help and was in a state of shock. When she got home, she told her cousin who encouraged her to make a police report.
The victim found bruises on her right breast which could have been the result of Firdaus' act.
He was arrested at his workplace on Jan 13 and his sentence was backdated to his remand on Jan 14.
Firdaus, a Malaysian, asked the judge if he could come back to Singapore after his release but she told him it was outside her purview.
He could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined punishment on each charge.

Police arrest 13 foreign workers in Kaki Bukit dormitory brawl

SINGAPORE: Thirteen foreign workers were arrested after a brawl broke out late Tuesday night at a dormitory in Kaki Bukit.

Police said they received a call at 11.22pm requesting for assistance.

The men are believed to be from India and Bangladesh, and the fight was apparently sparked by a cricket match.

Most of the foreign workers said they were sleeping when the fight broke out after a televised cricket match between Bangladesh and the West Indies.

The West Indies won the game.

Some workers said they were awoken at between 2am and 3am, when police officers came to their rooms to conduct searches.

Chanthanakrishnan Chethapathi, who has worked in Singapore for nine years, said: "I went to sleep at around 8.30pm. At about 3 o'clock, the police came. There was a cricket match between Bangladesh and West Indies. I don't know who supported who, but there were two men fighting."

Workers said they believe the police were looking out for specific individuals after checking CCTV footage, as well as any other workers who had injuries.

Channel NewsAsia understands that nobody was taken to the hospital as a result of the incident.

There were also no reports of damage to property.

Another 22 foreign workers arrested for rioting at dormitory in Kaki Bukit

SINGAPORE: Another 22 men have been arrested for rioting at a foreign workers' dormitory in Kaki Bukit.

This brings the total number of people arrested to 35. The men are believed to be from India and Bangladesh.

Police said the fight took place during the screening of a live cricket match on Tuesday evening.

The match was between Bangladesh and the West Indies, in which the West Indies won.

Police said they will be charging 14 suspects in court on Friday with rioting.

If convicted, they face a jail term of seven years.

Another three suspects will be charged with affray. They face a jail term of a year or a fine of S$5,000.

Police said investigations against the other suspects are ongoing. - CNA/gn

Woman from China jailed for vice had earned $18,450 from prostitutes in just over 2 months

A woman from China who procured five women for prostitution and earned $18,450 from them for 21/2 months was jailed a total of 14 months on Friday.

Zhang Changyan, 24, who faced 21 vice-related charges and two immigration offences, had admitted to nine charges including detaining two of the prostitutes against their will.

A district court heard that between April and June last year, Zhang managed a Lorong 7 Geylang premises as a brothel. She charged five women, aged between 25 and 43, $80 to $120 a day to use the place for their prostitution activities.

Investigation further showed that she would take sexually provocative photographs of these Chinese nationals and upload them on mobile phone application We Chat to advertise their sexual services.

SINGAPORE - Finding himself short of cash, he cooked up a plan to grab some.

Lee Heong Chye, 35, arrived at a hawker centre near a Geylang Bahru car park in the morning to look for someone he could rob.

He waited for about seven hours before he found his target - Ms Chung Yi Ren, who was returning to her parked car.

Lee then pointed a pen knife at her, took over her car and drove it as she sat in the front passenger seat.

He robbed her of items worth $2,251, including cash, an iPhone 5 and a watch. He also took her ATM cards.

Yesterday, the Malaysian admitted to armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession and consumption of a controlled substance.

He was sentenced to 54 months' jail and 12 strokes of the cane.

Lee, a contract worker for Koway Glass, will also be disqualified from driving for five years upon his release.

Court documents revealed that he went to the hawker centre at 9.15am on Dec 1 last year, carrying a pouch that contained a penknife and duct tape that he planned to use on his victim.

He made sure that he was in a position to observe the cars going into the carpark.

Around 4pm, Lee spotted Ms Chung, 33, drive in, park her car and leave. She returned 20 minutes later.

While she was placing her belongings on the front passenger seat, Lee opened the driver's door.

He pointed a penknife at her and instructed her to take the front passenger seat while he sat in the driver's seat.

Lee then pointed the penknife at her waist area and warned her not to make any noise.

As he rummaged through Ms Chung's handbag and fished out her car key, she tried to escape.

He swatted her hand away from the door handle and asked her to buckle the seat belt. Ms Chung refused at first but complied after he scolded her.

DRIVE OF TERROR

Lee asked Ms Chung to show him how to start the engine. He then started the car and drove off, with his right hand on the steering wheel and left hand keeping the penknife pointed at the victim's thigh area.

While driving, Lee coerced the victim into handing over all her cash.

Ms Chung removed the notes from her wallet and threw it onto his lap.

But she was determined to keep at least one of her possessions: she discreetly took off her watch and hid it under her lap.

Lee drove into a nearby carpark and parked the car.

He took Ms Chung's wallet and cards from her handbag, and asked for the PIN number to her cards, which she gave.

Then, Lee spotted the watch that she had hidden under her lap. He took it and tied the victim's wrists together with masking tape. He also taped her body, including her neck, to the seat.

When Lee asked Ms Chung to hand over her iPhone, she said she had forgotten where it was.

But he found it in her bag, and scolded her for lying to him. He then used a plastic bag to cover her wrist and left.

Lee proceeded to Kallang where he tried to withdraw money with Ms Chung's ATM cards but the PIN number she provided was incorrect.

He then went to Johor Baru and lost the cash he took from her on illegal jackpots the same day. Drugs were also found on him when he was arrested.

The victim did not sustain any injuries but was terrified, the court heard.

"Lee committed a very serious offence that was premeditated," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhou Yihong.

China national jailed in Singapore for stealing $300 on board SilkAir flight

SINGAPORE - A Chinese national who stole $300 from a passenger on board a SilkAir flight was jailed for 12 months on Friday.

Zhang Chunsheng, 49, admitted to stealing a black backpack containing a wallet with $300 from Mr Low Siow Ling, 49, on board the aircraft flying from Shenzhen, China, to Singapore on March 7 this year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yang Ziliang said the native from Jiangsu province was seated beside Mr Low when he removed the victim's backpack from the overhead compartment and walked to the toilet at about 7.50pm.

Two passengers saw this and told the victim to check his belongings. He found his backpack missing.

Man charged with being drunk, hurting police officer

SINGAPORE: A Chinese national who hurt a police officer while he was held in a police lockup was charged in court on Tuesday.

Bai Ting, 28, also faces a charge for being drunk and incapable of taking care of himself in a public place.

Bai was found drunk at about 7pm on Sunday at Lorong 27A Geylang.

At about 9pm the same day, he bit the right forearm of Sergeant Ng Wen Chi at the lockup of Bedok Police Division Headquarters.

For being drunk and incapable of taking care of himself in a public place, Bai faces a maximum fine of $1,000 and one month's jail.

For hurting a police officer, Bai could be jailed up to seven years, caned and fined. - CNA/de

Eleven workers charged with rioting at construction site

SINGAPORE: A group of 11 workers have been charged with rioting at a construction site off Choa Chu Kang.

The workers, aged between 21 and 46, are accused of punching and kicking seven other men, on April 6 at about 3.15pm.

The alleged offence took place at the site for Rainforest Condominium.

Indonesian gets 4 years' jail and 7 strokes for assault committed 22 years ago

An Indonesian national who attacked three Malaysians in a flat 22 years ago was sentenced to four years' jail and seven strokes of the cane on Tuesday for causing grievous hurt to one of the victims.

Khairul, 45, now a religious teacher, was 24 at the time. He pleaded guilty to slashing Mr Lim Bu Chuan, 23, on the neck at about 2am at a flat in Block 362, Clementi Avenue 2 on Sept 26, 1992.

Mr Lim became paralysed as a result, and died in Malaysia on Feb 9, 1993 from respiratory failure.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Lydia Goh told the court that Khairul had been attending a refresher course in Singapore at the time of the incident.

Man arrested for molesting a female bystander near Buffalo Road

SINGAPORE - A 34-year-old male Indian national was arrested by the police this afternoon for molesting a female bystander near Buffalo Road.

At about 3pm today, the 21-year-old victim was waiting for her family members near Buffalo Road when the suspect came up and mumbled to her.

According to the police, the man stood a distance away and kept exchanging glances at the victim.

Immediately after, he walked up to her and molested her.

The victim was shocked and pushed his hands away then screamed for help.

The suspect attempted to run away but was detained with help from the staff of a nearby mini mart.

The police were eventually called and the suspect was arrested.

Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.

If convicted for the offence of Outrage of Modesty under Section 354(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, the suspect may be jailed up to two years, or fined and also be caned.

Commander of Central Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Daniel Tan commended the quick response resulting in the expeditious arrest of the suspect.

He advised members of public to be alert of their surroundings. He also advised them to remain calm, and proceed to the nearest open business premises, or crowded area, and call for the Police to seek help if any suspicious character is spotted or if they suspect that they are being followed or trailed.

Construction worker gets 9 months’ jail for molesting woman

SINGAPORE: A construction worker was on Friday given nine months' jail for molesting a woman after she showed him neighbourliness with a simple greeting.

Vadla Kandappachari, 38, who was carrying out upgrading works at a Tampines HDB block, had squeezed the breast of a 43-year-old woman who lives there.

The court heard that in mid-January this year, the accused went to the woman's unit to inspect and carry out the upgrading works.

He was leaving at about 8.20am, when the woman saw him and bade him farewell.

When she turned around, the accused sprang an attack on her.

With her back facing him, he grabbed both her arms from behind and reached for her right breast. The victim only managed to break free by biting the accused's hand.

In mitigation, the court heard that the accused, an Indian national, deeply regrets his actions.

One other charge of outrage of modesty by kissing her hand was taken into consideration for sentencing purposes.

Kandappachari was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment.

M'sian charged over attempt to evade immigration clearance

SINGAPORE: A 42-year-old Malaysian was charged on Monday with failing to stop his car for immigration clearance at the Woodlands Checkpoint.

He also faces a second charge of failing to present his passport

It is the third reported case this year, of a driver being arrested in connection with evading authorities at the checkpoint.

According to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Koh Chin Had, who was driving a Malaysian-registered car, allegedly tried to evade immigration clearance by tailgating the car in front of him.

This happened at an arrival car counter at Woodlands Checkpoint on Sunday, at around 12.20pm.

ICA said an officer activated the alarm and the Arrival Car Zone was locked down immediately.

The car was then trapped in the zone, and officers were then quickly able to arrest its driver.

During the short hearing at the State Courts on Monday afternoon, Koh said he intends to plead guilty.

He was dressed in a white polo tee, and remained calm as he stood in the holding area for accused persons.

Prosecutors have indicated that they will proceed on the first charge of failing to stop a vehicle at Woodlands Checkpoint, and this carries a maximum punishment of six months’ jail and a S$2,000 fine.

The second charge of failing to present a passport will be taken into consideration for sentencing.

Koh will be back in court on Tuesday for his plea to be taken.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said this recent incident shows that border security on both sides is tight and that instances of people who have entered Singapore without proper clearance have mostly been contained.

Mr Teo said: "There will always be attempts by people to evade customs or immigration checks at the borders and this is not unique to Singapore.

“I would say the measures we have taken at the checkpoints have been reasonably effective in deterring and containing entry into Singapore by persons or goods that are not allowed to.

"In three cases that have evaded and exited the checkpoints, the persons were subsequently arrested and appropriate action was taken against them." - CNA/xq

SINGAPORE - A corporate sales manager with American Express e-mailed almost 800 confidential files from his company laptop to his personal e-mail account before he resigned to join a rival bank.
Permanent resident Ricky Suparman, 27, had intended to use the data in his new job, but was found out when his supervisor checked his e-mail account.
He was fined $24,000 yesterday after pleading guilty to eight charges of computer misuse.
The Indonesian had been working for American Express International when he was offered a job at United Overseas Bank (UOB) as a business financial manager.
Amex company policy dictates that when employees quit to join a competitor, they must leave on the day of their resignation. Its staff also sign contracts which safeguard confidential information about their customers.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tang Shangjun said Suparman tendered his resignation on Feb 27, 2012. He told supervisor Belinda Ann Koh Yew Cheng that he would be joining a rival bank.
While Ms Koh was reviewing his e-mail account to reassign Suparman's clients to other team members, she found the e-mail he had sent which contained attachments of confidential client information belonging to Amex.
He was immediately placed on gardening leave for a month and asked to leave the premises.
Mr Tang said the files Suparman gained unauthorised access to were of a "highly sensitive" nature, such as the amounts charged by clients to their cards, personal particulars of customers and confidential financial documents.
Most of the company accounts he managed at Amex related to those with annual revenues of up to $20 million.
District Judge Low Wee Ping said most of the files pertained to financial records of individuals or companies that, if misused, would have caused "considerable harm" to the clients. He said he would have considered a short jail term if the prosecution had requested it.
Suparman could have been fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed for up to two years on each charge. He joined UOB in March 2012, in a job which involved selling loans and trade services to small and medium-sized enterprises.
He left in July last year and is now a market researcher.

Man jailed 18 months for misappropriating fuel

SINGAPORE: A marine engineer who misappropriated 200 tonnes of fuel worth more than S$153,000 from his ship was on Thursday sentenced to 18 months' jail for criminal breach of trust as a servant.

58-year-old Pittis Stavros was convicted on April 10 of engaging in a buy-back scheme with a bunker clerk and an independent marine surveyor.

The Greek had under-declared the amount of fuel remaining in MV Sakura Princess, the vessel for which he is a chief engineer. Instead of supplying the full 500 tonnes of fuel to the vessel, only 300 tonnes were delivered.

Together with other suspects, Stavros then sold back the remaining 200 tonnes to the fuel supplier.

Stavros was arrested on January 10, 2013, the day the transaction took place.

In his submissions, prosecutor Sanjiv Vaswani urged the court to impose a jail term of 28 months, citing the great degree of pre-meditation and planning to avoid detection.

Mr Vaswani said that it is in the public's interest to deter bunkering-related offences.

Singapore is the top bunkering port in the world, he added, with sales rising to 42.5 million metric tonnes in 2013, from 25.4 million tonnes in 2005.

However, defence lawyer Shashi Nathan argued that the S$30,300 that Stavros was said to have received in exchange for the short-supply was not found. He added that the person who allegedly received the money was also missing.

Mr Nathan said Stavros had not benefited personally from the transaction.

However, District Judge Eddy Tham said it is in the public's interest to deter such crimes and imposed an 18-month jail term.

Stavros has requested to be allowed to go back to Athens to spend the Good Friday weekend with his family. His bail was doubled from S$60,000 to S$120,000.

The defence has indicated that it is appealing against both the conviction and the sentence. - CNA/ac

Three men jailed for burglary

SINGAPORE: Two Chinese nationals have been sentenced to four years' jail for housebreaking. Their accomplice was jailed two years for attempted burglary.

25-year-old Wei Yongjiao and 29-year-old Liao Jiali had stolen more than S$268,000 worth of luxury watches and jewellery from eight units in October 2013.

Of the eight housebreaking charges, the prosecution proceeded on two. The rest were taken into consideration for sentencing purposes.

As for their duo's accomplice, 25-year-old Wei Yuandong, he was convicted of one charge of attempted housebreaking together with Wei Yongjiao and Liao.

This was in October 2013 at Springwood Heights.

Previously, the police said it had received reports of break-ins at three homes along Lorong Sarhad and the Springwood area in Pasir Panjang between 9 and 11pm on October 27.

Cash and valuables amounting to more than S$110,000 were reportedly stolen.

The penalty for housebreaking with the intention to steal is between two and 14 years' jail. - CNA/ac

M'sian arrested over attempt to breach checkpoint

SINGAPORE: Police on Monday morning arrested a 33-year-old Malaysian man who attempted to drive out of the Woodlands Checkpoint while undergoing checks.

This happened after he was unable to produce his travel document at the arrival car counter.

The alarm was activated and the arrival car zone was locked down immediately.

This is the fourth such incident at the Woodlands Checkpoint this year.

Malaysian in latest attempted checkpoint breach charged

SINGAPORE: A Malaysian allegedly at the centre of the latest attempted checkpoint breach was charged in court on Wednesday with trying to enter Singapore without a valid pass.

The man, Mohd Sani Bin Mohamad Salleh, allegedly attempted to drive out of the Woodlands Checkpoint on April 21 after failing to produce his travel documents at the arrival counter.

Immigration officers activated the alarm, locked down the Arrival Car Zone and arrested the 33-year-old.

He is currently remanded at the Institute of Mental Health, pending psychiatric assessment.

His case, the fourth attempted breach this year, will be heard in court on May 7. - CNA/gn

Designer jailed for hitting taxi driver

A designer who hit a taxi driver on the back of his head was jailed for three weeks on Wednesday.

Chinese national Qiu Lei Lei, 29, shouted vulgarities at Mr Neo Leong Hiap, 53, when he asked him where he wanted to go.

He had picked up Qiu and a friend in Geylang and dropped off the latter at Centrepoint shopping centre on Orchard Road, Deputy Public Prosecutor Victor Lim told the court.

Mr Neo got out of his car to ask passers by to help him find out where Qiu wanted to go, or to get him to pay his fare. But his passenger also got out and continued abusing the driver who decided to call police.
