Couple fined for abandoning girl while job-hunting in Singapore
Couple pleaded guilty to locking up their 2-year-old daughter for 17 hours in a room while they went job-hunting in Singapore. -The Star/ANN

JOHOR BARU - A couple, facing financial woes, found out the hard way that it could not be used as an excuse to neglect their child.
They were yesterday fined RM10,000 (S$4.293) or two years' jail, after they pleaded guilty to locking up their 2-year-old daughter for 17 hours in a room while they went job-hunting in Singapore.
Akun Usop, 37, and wife Mariana Romut, 23, from Sarawak, pleaded guilty yesterday to locking up their daughter, Nur Aisyah, alone in a room at the Daiman Apartment in Jalan Jim Quee here last week.
Nur Aisyah was left with nothing but a plate of rice to feed on as the couple left the unit about 5.30am on April 17.
Neighbours were alerted to the child's continuous cries and called the police about 10.30pm.
They forced open the door and saw the girl alone in a room.
The couple, who came back from Singapore a few hours later, were arrested, while Nur Aisyah was placed in the temporary care of the Welfare Department.
Yesterday at the magistrate's court, Akun and Mariana pleaded for leniency after they pleaded guilty to abandoning their child alone at home under Section 33(a) of the Child Act 2001.
Both husband and wife, who were unrepresented, told the magistrate that they still had to take care of their daughter and settle their financial woes.
Magistrate Hafizah Johor Ariff Johor, however, imposed the maximum fine of RM5,000 against each of them or two-years' jail in default.
At press time, both had yet to pay the fine.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Iffa Zarilla Abdul Rahman prosecuted.
It was later learnt that the couple had been staying at the apartment for the past two years.
They had been odd-job workers in Singapore but were recently laid off.

Indonesia accuses Indian exec over 'stupid' slur

Indonesian police said Friday they have named an Indian company executive as a suspect over an insulting remark that triggered a riot by thousands of factory workers.

Ghesa Prabaharan, a 27-year-old Indian executive at the factory, is alleged to have called Indonesian people "stupid," and could risk up to four years in jail, police deputy spokesman Zainuri Lubis told reporters.
Nine people including five Indians were injured when about 5,000 workers set fire to dozens of cars and buildings belonging to PT Drydock World Graha in Batam city, a special economic area south of Singapore.
"The riot was triggered when the suspect called Indonesian people 'stupid'," Lubis said, adding that the executive was among the injured and still being treated in hospital.
Around 400 police were rushed to the seaside factory to calm the furious protesters and the Antara news agency said more than 40 unidentified foreign staff were evacuated in boats

Bali's beach boys detained

They are accused of selling sex to female tourists

05:55 AM Apr 28, 2010

DENPASAR - Indonesia has detained 28 "beach boys" accused of selling sex to female tourists on Bali after a documentary titled Cowboys in Paradise on the island's "gigolos" went viral on the Internet.
Singapore-based writer and director Amit Virmani - who has received hate mail and death threats following the release of the film last week - told The Jakarta Globe that he never expected the documentary to create so much controversy.
Tourism officials were fretting over the impact of the film on Bali's image as a family destination after segments of the film appeared on YouTube. The film contains candid interviews with "beach boys", who speak about their escapades with foreign women, including their stock pick-up lines in a number of foreign languages.
Mr Virmani said he decided to make the film after meeting a 12-year-old boy in Bali who confessed an eagerness "to grow up and be of sexual service to Japanese women", the Globe reported.
Bali Tourism Board chief Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya said that the "cowboys" had been fixtures on Bali's tourist beaches for some time but had not attracted much attention until now.
"The film is over the top and only focuses on this group of people on the beach, but that's not what Bali is about. If the film is shown to the world, Bali's image will be tarnished," he said.
The chief of security on Bali's main Kuta beach said they had rounded up 28 men suspected to be gigolos.
"They're young, fit-looking and tanned, mostly surfer beach boys," said Mr I Gusti Ngurah Tresna.
"If we have good reason to suspect they may be involved in shady activities, we'll hand them over to the police," he said. But he admitted it would be hard to prove they were selling sex.
"They will approach foreign female tourists, especially Japanese, on the beach, befriend them and the women will pay for their company and food during their stay here. Sex may be involved," Mr Tresna.
"It's like prostitution which is hard to prove because the foreign women may be willing partners too." AGENCIES

Malaysian Kwek Yui Lam, 22, admitted to two counts of having sex with the girl last December, and had a third similar charge taken into consideration. The victim's mother had rented the flat for her to live in since October as the girl could not get along with her mother's new family. From Dec 1, Kwek and his fiancee, moved in.

One night, Kwek asked the victim if she wanted to play 3P, a slang for threesome having sex together. The victim agreed, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Olivine Lin. Kwek had sex with his fiancee, followed by the victim, and then with the fiancee again. After the incident, the fiancee told him not to have sex with the victim again as she regretted having 'shared' her boyfriend with someone else. <!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> A MACHINE operator will serve four weeks' jail after he could not pay the $4,000 fine yesterday for stealing two $1,000 cash chips from a man at a baccarat table at the casino in Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). Manager banned, fined

<!-- end left side bar -->

<!-- story content : start -->

A MOTORIST whose negligence caused the death of a motorcyclist on an expressway last year was fined $5,000 and banned from driving for three years yesterday. A coroner had found that the negligence of German commercial manager Frank Hoewelkroeger, 35, resulted in the death of Mr Sia Chong Shyang along the Seletar Expressway on Jan 5 last year. Hoewelkroeger was named a potential defendant at the coroner's inquiry. Mr Sia, 27, a Malaysian construction worker, died from multiple injuries.

Hoewelkroeger, a Singapore permanent resident, admitted failing to keep a proper lookout when he suddenly swerved from the right lane into the centre lane, hitting Mr Sia's motorcycle and causing him to be flung from the machine onto the road and into the path of a trailer which ran over him.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Adrian Loo told the court that Hoewelkroeger was in the car with his wife when he suddenly swerved the vehicle after seeing that traffic in front of him had come to a standstill.

By failing to keep a proper lookout, his car hit Mr Sia's motorcycle, said the DPP.
Mr Christopher Bridges said in his written mitigation plea that his client, who has 15 years' driving experience, had heard screeching sounds of tyres followed by a series of collision noises on the day of the incident. He noticed the car in front of him had braked abruptly, and he applied his brake partially.

Maid jailed for extortion

By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent

AN INDONESIAN maid who threatened to kill her employer's eight-month-old son was given the minimum two years' jail on Monday for extortion. Nurhasanah, 29, admitted to putting her employer in fear of death of her son at the Jurong West Street 42 home on Nov 10 last year. She had pressed a pair of scissors against the child and threatened to kill the baby if her 34-year-old employer refused to send her home immediately.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Edmund Lam said Nurhasanah, who started working for the family in July last year, had asked to be sent home three times before the incident as she missed her home and her children. That evening, the DPP said the employer was doing some household chores when Nurhasanah pressed the pair of kitchen scissors against the back of the infant she was carrying and made the threat. Nurhasanah took her employer's jacket to cover her hand and conceal the scissors that was held against the baby's body before the two women and child left for the airport by cab.

There she disposed of the scissors but continued to use the jacket to cover the child. It was only after the ticket had been bought and the maid had entered the controlled immigration area that she handed over the child to her employer in exchange for her passport. The employer alerted a Certis Cisco officer before getting a Garuda Airline counter staff who stopped the maid from boarding the flight. Nurhasanah could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

A Chinese national was fined $2,000 on Tuesday for stealing two pieces of Marina Bay Sands chips from a gamer. --ST FILE PHOTO

A CHINESE national was fined $2,000 on Tuesday for stealing two pieces of Marina Bay Sands chips from a gamer. Wang XingRong, 33, admitted stealing the chips with a face value of $25 each from American Huang Albert Htin Aung, 52, at the MBS casino on Monday. A magistrate's court heard that Mr Huang had placed two $25 chips on the 'player's pair'' box and another pair just outside the box at a baccarat table. He then left for the next table.Moments later, the dealer realised that there were two pieces of $25 chips outside the 'banker's pair'' box and asked for the owner.

Wang claimed to be the owner and retrieved the chips. He then placed a $25 chip on the 'tie'' box and kept the other. When the result was revealed, he walked away as he did not win. Mr Huang then realised that the two $25 chips which were supposed to be on the 'banker's pair'' box were not there. He confronted the dealer and the pit supervisor was called in. Wang was eventually tracked down and detained. He could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined.

Jailed 54 months for forgery

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
<!-- end by line -->
A FORMER accounts officer who forged his boss's signature on blank cheques and got away with about $506,000 was jailed 54 months on Monday. Wanto, 29, a Singapore permanent resident, was working for Siang Malam when he committed 71 forgery offences for his soccer bets and losses from betting. The court heard that he was employed by Madam Lie Tjhui Lie, 50, to manage the accounts and bookkeeping for her three companies - Pagi Sore Holdings, Pagi Sore Indonesian Restaurant and Siang Malam. Sometime in April 2008, he was in financial difficulties as he had lost money from betting on soccer matches.

He was also unhappy with the way Madam Lie treated him and her other employees.
As a result, he came up with a plan to take a few blank cheques each time she passed him the company's cheque book book. He would then issue cheques in favour of himself and forge her signature on the cheques for various sums of money. Police managed to recover $18,000. Wanto, who is married with a child, could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined on each of the 20 charges proceeded. The remaining 51 charges were taken into consideration.

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A TANZANIAN has been charged with trying to cheat the newly opened Marina Bay Sands (MBS) casino of $35,000 in a roulette game. Kipuyo Lemburis Israel, 34, was brought to court last Friday for allegedly trying to cheat a dealer on duty at a roulette table at MBS by past-posting. Past-posting is the act of placing the bet after the result is known. He is said to have intentionally placed a chip with a cash value of $1,000 on a single number bet last Thursday after the result had been declared, to induce the dealer to pay him $35,000 worth of chips. The amount is the largest so far in a casino-related crime here. MBS, which opened on April 27, is the Republic's second integrated resort, after Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), which opened in February.

Kallang slashings: 3 held

POLICE have arrested three men linked to a series of brutal slash-and-rob cases in Kallang, which left one victim dead and three serious injured on Sunday. The suspects, Malaysians aged between 21 and 26, were picked up on Monday night after a 24-hour police operation that was rare in both its scale and intensity. The more than 100 officers deployed included those from the Special Operations Command, Bedok and Central Police Divisions, the Police Intelligence Department and the Criminal Investigation Department.

The Straits Times had reported that over seven hours on Sunday, four slashing cases took place in the Kallang area between midnight and 7.30am. The victims included a 41-year-old Indian national who was found dead at an open field along Kallang Road. The injured victims, who included a teenager who lost four of his fingers, were attacked at the Pan Island Expressway near the Sims Way exit, Block 44 Sims Drive and Kallang MRT.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, the police said the modus operandi, the timing and proximity of the four incidents meant they did not rule out the possibility that they could have been committed by the same perpetrators. All four victims had been slashed and robbed. Police are now searching for four more suspects who they believe are linked to the cases. CID director Ng Boon Gay said: 'I would like to reassure the public that the police do not tolerate such vicious and violent acts of crime.

We will spare no efforts to hunt down the perpetrators and ensure that they are dealt with to the full extent of the law.'
He also commended the officers for their effort in putting a stop to the 'brutal crime spree'. Murder is punishable by the death penalty, while gang robbery with hurt attracts a maximum jail term of 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

When he returned to the shop on April 9 to try to buy more phones, the staff called the police. On Tuesday, the Malaysian, 34, was jailed for 2 1/2 years for credit card fraud amounting to $27,000 comprising mainly of phones.

A district court heard that Tan had borrowed money from a loan shark in Malaysia late last year. When his employer did not give out the annual year-end bonus, the shop assistant was unable to repay the debt. He was the roped in by the loan shark to come to Singapore and buy expensive items with fake credit cards and 10 per cent of the value of the item would go to payment of his debt. The court was told that none of the items were recovered.

SINGAPORE : A disheveled-looking man was charged in the Subordinate Court Wednesday morning for the murder of a part-time Toto lottery draw results announcer on last Monday.

53-year-old Fang Gao San was said to have murdered Mr Sito Woon Chee, 59, at around 6.41pm in front of PoMo Mall along Selegie Road.

Mr Sito was fatally stabbed 15 minutes after he announced Monday's draw results.

Fang who allegedly fled the scene on foot, was then caught by police officers with the help of two members of the public.

Fang and Mr Woon were reportedly not known to each other.
