Maid jailed 12 months for hurting employer's 87-year-old mum more than 20 times

SINGAPORE - A domestic worker who vented her frustration on her employer's elderly mother by hurting the 87-year-old more than 20 times was jailed for 12 months on Wednesday.

Indonesian Sulastri Sakiran Sumadi, 37, had borne a grudge against her employer over a dispute they had sometime in February last year.

Instead of sorting the matter out with her employer, Ms Marlene Poh Geok Hee, 51, she vented her dissatisfaction on Ms Poh's mother, Madam Tan Lye Hoe, by using her bare hands or an object to hurt her as a form of revenge.

She faced 24 charges and admitted to eight counts.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai said Sulastri was employed in April 2013 to do household chores and take care of Madam Tan, who suffers from a host of medical conditions including Alzheimer's disease. She was also bedridden.

From May 17 to June 21 last year, Sulastri repeatedly caused hurt to various parts of the victim's body using various means at her employer's home in Dunman Road.

Every time she hit or inflicted hurt upon the victim, the elderly woman would neither retaliate nor shout. Instead, she would say "sakit'' (Malay for pain) softly and apologise to the maid, despite not knowing what she had done which led to the assault.

Unknown to the maid, her actions of voluntarily causing hurt were recorded by a closed-circuit TV installed in the victim's room.

It was only when the victim complained to her daughter of pain in her head did the latter review the CCTV footage and saw what Sulastri had done.

The court heard that on three occasions on June 13, Sulastri forcefully hit the victim's shoulders with her hands, used a pillow to hit her face, and a comb to hit Madam Tan's head.

On June 20, she used a dustbin to hit the victim's leg, followed by a towel to hit her face. She also hit the victim on the face on three separate occasions the next day.

Pleading for a light sentence, Sulastri said her mother died in February last year and she had asked her employer for leave to go home but was rejected. She said she could not control her mind and took it out on the victim.

District Judge Lee Poh Choo said she had been cruel and wicked towards the victim, who was totally dependent on her care.

"You used such force that you left bruises and marks on this old lady. I agree with prosecution a deterrent sentence is definitely called for," she said.

She hoped Sulastri would reflect on what she had done while in prison, and become a better person.

The maximum penalty for causing hurt is two years' jail and a $5,000 fine on each charge.

Delivery driver faked robbery to siphon $506K from employer

SINGAPORE - A Malaysian delivery driver who faked a robbery to get his hands on more than $500,000 from his employer was jailed for four years on Thursday for criminal breach of trust.

Suleiman Latiff, 28, admitted to misappropriating RM800,000 (S$306,640) and $200,000 when he was employed by JBS Global, a Malaysian moneychanger, on Jan 29 last year.

A district court heard that Suleiman had earlier met Malaysians Suthagar Rajamoney, 28, and Abdul Wahid Zainudin, 33. At the meeting, Wahid discussed a plan for Suleiman to hand over cash entrusted to him by JBS.

Wahid and his accomplices would wait in Singapore for Suleiman to meet them with the cash. After that, Wahid would use a knife to cut Suleiman to make the fake robbery seem more authentic.

Suleiman agreed as he wanted to get rich quickly, the court heard.

That day, after Suleiman had received the money from a colleague at Woodlands Town Gardens, he rode his motorcycle along Bukit Timah Expressway where he stopped by a blue motorcycle and a black car parked at the side of the expressway.

He handed the cash to Wahid, who passed it on to Sukumaran Turasamy, 44, who was in the car. Suthagar was on the motorbike.

Wahid then used a knife to repeatedly cut Suleiman, before leaving on Suthagar's motorcycle. Sukumaran drove away with the cash.

Suleiman called his colleague and said that he had been robbed. The colleague came and took him to a clinic and called the police.

Suthagar was jailed 12 months last year for intentionally aiding Suleiman to siphon money. Wahid and Sukumaran are at large.

Suleiman's sentence was backdated to his arrest on Jan 30 last year.

Matchmaking agency wrecker flip-flops on plea

What started out as an attempt to spice up her love life became a tale full of action of a far different sort.

When Zhang Xiu Chun signed up with a matchmaking agency in February 2012, she expected success, but that was not what she received, Chinese evening dailies reported yesterday.

After two failed matchmaking attempts, the 39-year-old Singapore permanent resident withdrew her membership from Good Luck Friends Centre and had part of her membership fees refunded the following month.

But the passing of a year did nothing to quell Zhang's dissatisfaction and on May 11, 2013, she returned to the agency at Parklane Shopping Mall. She stormed into the office brandishing a 34cm-long hammer and damaged several office items.

The subsequent damage amounted to $880 worth of property, including a table, The New Paper reported yesterday.

Zhang has since pleaded guilty to one charge of mischief.

However, in court on Wednesday, Zhang was unsure of her plea and disputed the $800 value of the table she had damaged.

Her lawyer, S. H. Almenoar, apologised to District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam for the delay and asked to speak to Zhang.

The accused further hampered court proceedings by asking for "five minutes to consider" her plea and stated that she was feeling sick.

When asked about her position, Zhang replied in Mandarin: "I had admitted to the damage (caused to the table and other items). But I used to work in a furniture company and it (the price of the damaged table) can't exceed this price."

To further complicate matters, her lawyer had applied to discharge himself.

In response, Zhang said she "accepted everything" and wanted Mr Almenoar to represent her.

Upon resuming his role, the lawyer said his client had confronted the agency owner as "she felt that she was taken for a ride".

It was revealed in court that Zhang was suffering from a "stress-related medical condition". He said: "It was an attack on her womanhood. She felt she was cheated into being a social escort."

Judge Kamala called for a mandatory treatment order suitability report before sentencing Zhang.

After three hours in court, the accused was escorted out to be treated for breathing difficulties.

She will next appear in court on Feb 26.

If found guilty of mischief with damage amounting to more than $500, she can be jailed for not more than two years.

Dutch retiree jailed a day and fined for punching Tigerair cabin crew member

SINGAPORE - A retiree who punched a cabin crew member in the shoulder while in transit at Changi Airport was jailed for a day on Friday.

Dutch national Gerrit Eveleens, 66, was also fined $3,000 after he admitting punching Mr Tan Leek Hwee, 46, on his shoulder after boarding the Tigerair at Terminal 2 at about 4pm on Jan 22.

The court heard that Eveleens had flown from Jakarta to Singapore and had got on his onward flight to Bangkok when he took an empty seat on row 13 instead of the one he had been allocated.

On seeing this, Mr Tan explained to him that it was an emergency seat which had more legroom and that he had to pay more to upgrade.

When he was given a seat upgrade card to fill up, Eveleens threw it and told the victim: "Shut up, I don't speak English."

Mr Tan sought the help of the captain who managed to convince Eveleens to return to his original seat.

While walking along the aisle towards the seat, he suddenly punched Mr Tan on his right shoulder. The captain stepped in and told him to leave but he refused.

The captain signalled to the ground staff to call the police. Eveleens, who was given another chance to leave, finally did so, shouting disparaging remarks about the airline on his way out.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Faizal Nooraznan sought a short custodial sentence for Eveleens, saying he was the sole aggressor and had attacked the crew member without any provocation.

"The incident happened just before take-off and caused inconvenience to the passengers boarding the plane," he said.

Eveleens said through a Dutch interpreter that he was very sorry and wanted to go back home as soon as possible.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000.

Factory worker jailed nine months for molesting colleague

SINGAPORE - A factory worker who grabbed a colleague and groped her breast after she asked him to open a door with his security card was jailed for nine months on Friday.

The 27-year-old Chinese national was working in Yishun last Nov 14 when he used criminal force to outrage the 22-year-old's modesty.

The court heard that the victim, a Malaysian, wanted to leave the workplace at about 8pm. As she had recently joined the company, her security card had not yet been activated and she wanted help to exit the premises.

The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was the only other person left in the factory and she sought his help to open the door.

He told her he was waiting for his mobile phone to charged so she stood beside him and waited.

The man then held onto her waist with his left hand. She pushed him away and tried to leave but he grabbed her hand and pulled her onto his lap.

The woman struggled and managed to break free but fell. She got up and proceeded to her own office.

The accused followed her and squeezed her breast from behind. She managed to break free and shouted at him. He eventually opened the door for her and she left.

She reported the matter to the company the next day and her supervisor called the police.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kenny Yang, who sought a prison sentence of nine to 10 months, told District Judge Imran Abdul Hamid that the accused persisted despite the victim's protest and struggle. He said there was some element of restraint and confinement.

Counsel Gordon Lim said the victim has forgiven his client who later tried to apologise.

The accused, whose sentence was backdated to Nov 17 last year, could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined punishment.

Firecrackers seized at Tuas checkpoint

SINGAPORE - 24 strips of firecrackers and two small boxes of 18 "Boom" firecrackers were seized during a routine check at Tuas Checkpoint on Feb 6.

A Malaysian-registered car driven by a 33-year-old Malaysian man was stopped by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers, at about 11.20pm, where they uncovered a cardboard box containing items suspected to be firecrackers in the car boot.

The man and the items were referred to the Singapore Police Force for further investigations which are ongoing.

If convicted, the man is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than six months and not more than two years and may also be punished with caning with not more than six strokes.

ICA said in a statement released today: "ICA will continue to conduct our security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands. The same methods of concealment used by contraband smugglers may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives to carry out attacks in Singapore."

SINGAPORE - A teenager poured a kettle of hot water over her flatmate for not doing household chores to her satisfaction, leaving the victim with first-degree burns on her shoulders and back. Three times, Chinese national Long Yan, 17, also ordered her compatriot to strip naked, snapped pictures of her and threatened to circulate them.

Long was on Tuesday sentenced to three months and a week in jail. She is appealing the sentence.

The victim was so traumatised that she returned to China after making a police report, the prosecution said.

Both girls were 16 at the time, and classmates at a private school here.

On June 7, 2013, they were alone at their Toh Tuck Road flat as five other housemates had returned home to China.

The victim was doing chores 9pm, such as sweeping and mopping the floor.

Unhappy with the work done, Long scolded her housemate and hit her with her mobile phone.

She then told the girl to boil some water. The victim did as she was told, and Long took the kettle and poured the boiling water over her.

Long also took nude photographs of her and threatened to circulate them.

District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan had called for a pre-sentence report on Dec 22 last year to assess Long's suitability for probation, because of her age. But Long was found unsuitable as she is not resident in Singapore, and does not live with her guardian.

Long's lawyer said that because of the case, her school had terminated her student pass. Long has also had to remain in Singapore since the incident.

For voluntarily causing hurt with a heated substance, Long could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined. She could have been jailed for up to two years and fined for each of two counts proceeded with of criminal intimidation.

SINGAPORE - It started with a chance meeting between two female students romantically linked with the same man and ended in a six-on-one assault in a karaoke lounge.

Ms Zheng Lu was left with many scratches on her body after being set upon by Wang Xi, 24, and five others on May 3 last year.

Wang had suspected Ms Zheng, 19, of having an affair with her boyfriend. She grabbed Ms Zheng by the hair as the victim was walking around the outlet, pulled her top and pushed her to the ground.

The six attackers then used their hands to strike the victim. Two others had to intervene to break up the scuffle.

Jail and cane for outrage of modesty

TAKING advantage of the festive mood, a construction worker molested a stranger on New Year's Day.

Parthiban Pandu hugged the 44-year-old victim from behind, and she thought it was just a friend.

He squeezed the woman's breasts as she was turning around to see who it was, and continued to molest her before she could react.

Yesterday, Parthiban, who is from India, was sentenced to 10 months' jail and ordered to be given three strokes of the cane.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to outraging his victim's modesty just after midnight on Jan 1.

The court heard that the incident took place in a recreation centre for foreign workers in Soon Lee Road, in Boon Lay.

As he drank with a friend at the carpark, Parthiban noticed more than 50 people celebrating the new year at the coffee shop in the centre. He entered the coffee shop, where the victim and others were spraying confetti. He then molested her.

During police investigations, Parthiban said that he had acted "out of fun and celebration".

Assistant Public Prosecutor Koh Huimin told the court this showed Parthiban was unremorseful.

Highlighting police statistics, Ms Koh said there had been 1,367 outrage of modesty cases last year, a 3.2 per cent increase from 1,325 cases in 2013.

Pleading for leniency, Parthiban said he was the sole breadwinner in his family.

He added that it had been 40 days since he last made a call to his mother, who recently underwent surgery on her stomach and is not well.

He said the victim was of his mother's age. Parthiban could have been jailed for up to two years, fined and caned.

Expat poached clients from own employer

An expatriate executive who set up a rival company to siphon clients from his long-time employer could face a payout of millions of dollars after losing a High Court case.

Mr Antonius Martinus Mattheus Schonk worked for Enholco, a Singapore firm offering spare parts and consultancy services to the oil and gas industry, for 23 years.

He was sacked in August 2012 after his bosses discovered he had set up the rival firm, and had taken steps to lure away the business and customers of Enholco when he was still its employee.

Mr Schonk, 62, a Dutch national based in Singapore, was sued by Enholco, which alleged that he had breached his fiduciary duties to the firm and had acted in a manner conflicting with its interests.

Enholco sought $1.7 million for losses incurred from his breach of duty and damages of $2.8 million to $4.2 million for loss of profits. The damages to be paid by Mr Schonk will be determined later.

In its judgment released last week, the High Court rejected Mr Schonk's claim that the firm he set up was done with the knowledge and consent of his bosses as part of a deal.

Mr Schonk, defended by lawyer See Chern Yang, denied the company's claims and also alleged he had been wrongfully dismissed.

He argued that his company was set up to take over one division in Enholco known as Unit 2, and there was a verbal deal in 2001 made with Enholco's managing director, Mr Haank Gerhard, 70, that he would take over all the business and assets of Unit 2.

In exchange, Mr Schonk would relieve Enholco of the costs of operating Unit 2.

Enholco, represented by lawyers Lau Teik Soon and K. Chandra Sekaran, countered that since 2001, Mr Schonk had never once claimed that Enholco had ceded, sold or transferred Unit 2 to him.

Justice Choo Han Teck found "telling" evidence which showed that Mr Schonk's explanation was a "late idea" in the legal proceedings.

The judge noted that although Mr Schonk was in charge of Unit 2, he kept Mr Gerhard fully informed of the business and monthly expenses of Unit 2, which clearly contradicted his claim that the unit belonged to him.

"However one looks at the evidence, (the Unit 2 agreement) is devoid of clear detail and unsupported by the conduct of the parties over the years," said Justice Choo.

He found that Mr Schonk not only started a rival firm but also took steps to lure away business while still working for Enholco.

"I find that throughout the years... Mr Schonk was the party whose conduct was surreptitious and not straightforward.

"I am also sceptical about his explanations as to why he deleted records from the company's computers. It was a deliberate act designed to comprehensively remove any trace of evidence against Mr Schonk," he said.

SINGAPORE - A man was charged in court on Tuesday with punching a teen driver who had crashed into an oncoming taxi in which he was a passenger.

Briton Alan Benjamin Maybury, 33, allegedly punched polytechnic student Lum Kwok Weng, 19, in his face causing mild swelling and a small superficial cut. He is also accused of using abusive words by shouting expletives at the teen.

The accident took place at about 1.30am along South Buona Vista Road on Nov 30.

According to an earlier report, Mr Lum was driving his mother's Toyota Camry when the accident took place. Seated at the front passenger seat of the car was a schoolmate.

IT specialist got 15-year-old to have sex with 18-year-old in hotel room

SINGAPORE - In the first case of its kind, a former IT specialist has been taken to court for causing a minor to have sex with another person while he took photographs of them.

In the dock on Thursday was the 41-year-old Singapore permanent resident, who pleaded guilty to doing so at Conrad Centennial Hotel sometime in late October or early November 2012. Two other charges will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced.

There is a gag order on the accused, the victim and the witness.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy told the court that the accused, a photography enthusiast, had done nude and erotic photography using models he obtained from a website.

Sometime in late October 2012, the minor, a Chinese national then in Secondary 4, came to know the accused, who advertised on the Craiglist classifieds, stating: "Hoping to fulfill my girlfriend's fantasies; seeking an extra man".

Curious, the 15-year-old responded, claiming he was 18. The man, who did not verify his age, arranged for the minor as well as the part-time model to meet him at the hotel in Temasek Boulevard.

While they were in the room, the part-time model told the minor she was a second-year polytechnic student, but had just dropped out of school. The minor claimed he was a first-year polytechnic student.

After talking for a while, the man, who had told the youth he was a businessman, set up his camera equipment and told the teen to pose with the model as he snapped photographs.

He then asked the model to undress the youth, who felt uncomfortable and awkward. The accused had reassured him that the photographs were meant only for his personal use.

The man then told the 18-year-old to take off her clothes. He got the duo to perform various sexual acts while he photographed them. He also joined them on the bed at one stage.

About 20 to 30 minutes later, he handed a condom packet to the minor and asked him to have sex with the model. The youth did so as she was engaged in a sexual activity with the man.

Before they left, he paid the model $250.

The offence came to light on Jan 8 last year, when someone saw the photographs online.

The maximum punishment for the offence is 10 years' jail and a fine.

English language translator from China jailed for taking language test on behalf of other

SINGAPORE - An English language translator from China who sat for a language proficiency test here on behalf of someone else was sentenced to five months in jail on Thursday.

Lina Zhang had been promised 7,000 yuan (S$1509) by a recruiter to pass the Dec 6 sitting of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination for someone named Ge Li.

The 29-year-old presented a forged Chinese passport that bore her face and the other person's details to gain access to the test venue.

The invigilator suspected something was amiss with the passport and sounded the alarm. Zhang pleaded guilty on Thursday to cheating by personation. The details of Ge Li's identity and whereabouts are unclear.

SINGAPORE - An Indian national who viciously attacked another Indian national to rob him, then left his body under the Kampong Java flyover, was jailed 16 years and ordered to be caned 12 strokes on Monday after he pleaded guilty to culpable homicide.

Periyasamy Devarajan was 20 years old in 2012 when he bashed 31-year-old Raju Arivazhagen in the face and head with a rock, a branch and three concrete slabs each weighing 10.5kg to 13.8kg.

He was initially accused of murder but the charge was later reduced to culpable homicide. No reason was given in court for why the charge was reduced.

The High Court heard on Monday that the two men, both construction workers, were strangers but chanced upon each other when Mr Raju was looking for his lost wallet.

The two men had separately gone to Little India on the night of Feb 7 as it was the Hindu festival Thaipusam.

In the early hours the next day, Mr Raju went up to Periyasamy, asking if he had seen a black wallet.

Periyasamy replied that he had and pointed in the direction of the flyover. He then led Mr Raju to the flyover, intending to rob him.

Unknown to Mr Raju, Periyasamy had earlier picked up his wallet and threw it into a drain after taking the $20 and ez-link card inside.

At the flyover, Periyasamy attacked Mr Raju until he stopped moving, then took his mobile phone.

Periyasamy was arrested on Feb 12 after his identity was established through surveillance camera footage and intelligence.

SINGAPORE - A Thai national was charged in court on Tuesday with the murder of a man at a flat in North Bridge Road on Sunday.

Sukanya Praphuttha, 41, who appeared shaken, is alleged to have caused the death of Mr Lee Yang Boo, 55, at the unit in Block 8 between 12.32am and 4.39am that day. The charge was read to her by a Thai interpreter.

According to a statement, police were informed that a man had a fall at the flat at 4.39am. The man was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The prosecution applied for Sukanya to be remanded at Changi Women's Prison for psychiatric assessment. The case will be mentioned again on March 24.

Lorry driver jailed 12 years for killing girlfriend

A lorry driver was sentenced to 12 years' jail and six strokes of the cane for killing his former girlfriend.

Chinese national Xiao Guiliang, 32, yesterday pleaded guilty in the High Court to one count of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Following a tiff at about 2am on July 7, 2013, Xiao brutally attacked Miss Zhang Jie, 24, with a knife in a Choa Chu Kang Crescent flat they used to share.

A friend who was with Miss Zhang called the police when she heard Miss Zhang screaming for help.

Miss Zhang was rushed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital where was pronounced dead at about 3.30am.

The attack was so vicious that it left her with 192 wounds and bruises, including a gaping wound in her neck, and another that resulted in her left eye coming loose of the socket.

After the attack, Xiao tried to commit suicide by drinking several tubes of insecticide.

SINGAPORE - A Singapore court on Thursday sentenced two young German men to nine months in prison and three strokes of the cane for spray-painting a metro train in the city-state last year.

Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, were sentenced after pleading guilty to vandalism and trespassing. Both asked for mercy before sentencing and called their acts a "stupid mistake".

"The imprisonment sentence in this case will be a total of nine months... and the mandatory minimum of three strokes of the cane," District Judge Liew Thiam Leng said.

"Overall, the court is of the view that the circumstances and facts of this case will justify the proposed sentenced given by the prosecution," he added.

They were sentenced to four months in jail for breaking into a suburban train depot in November 2014 and five months and three strokes of the cane for vandalising a carriage with spray paint.

Employer charged with raping maid

SINGAPORE - A 44-year-old man was charged on Friday with two counts of raping his Myanmar domestic worker in December 2013.

The accused, who is a Singapore permanent resident, is alleged to have raped the 35-year-old woman at about 1am and 7am on Dec 20, 2013.

He is out on bail of $70,000. His passport has been impounded.

The accused, who is married, is represented by Mr Shashi Nathan and Ms Tania Chin.

The case will be mentioned on April 17.

If convicted, he could be jailed for up to 20 years, fined and caned.
