Tesla sets its sights on China
Christian Science Monitor | All Stories

Tesla will build electric cars in China in the next three to four years, giving Tesla a foothold in an ever-growing market – and helping the automaker avoid China's hefty 25 percent import tariff.

China is the world's largest automobile market (and just about everything else too!) And because of this and the worsening air pollution, there is a drive to develop the electric car market. But local market tastes have not grown in tandem with purchasing power yet. Many buses are eletric motor driven, but not individual cars. There are local makes in this category, but no one seems keen. Lets wait for Formula E to help promote this category of motor vehicles which has already taken off in USA and Japan.

Cheers!

In my opinion, Tesla is going to be a flop in the next few years, unless the price of oil shoots up to over US$300 a barrel. For an electric vehicle, a hybrid is still better and more practical than a pure EV.

In singkieland...hybrids n EVs will not pick up as the pappies wjll not allow. If the car dint use petrol where the gahmen earn money from petrol tax? If the gahmen so hard up for the 3/4 tank rule. They will b more hard up for the fuel tax lost due to ev.

What? You can't get an electric car in Singapore? That goes to the same for an electric cigarette! The government seems to be against anything electric .

The fucking gahmen is literally the head of the petroleum cartels. Why would they welcome an alternative that will ultimately jeopardize their million-dollar salaries ?

For the manufacturers, Singapore is a very small market, whether internal combustion engine (ICE) or electric motor. For the local agents, the competition is to sell the premium brands, as it is more worthwhile that way. For instance, the cheapest passenger car to sell in Canada is the Nissan Micra, and in the US electric car market, the Nissan Leaf is quite well accepted. Both models are unseen on Singapore roads. You will however quite often come across Lamborghinis, Maseratis and Ferraris in Singapore.

Cheers!

E Cigarettes? What is the value in it?

E-cigarette contains nicotine, which is an addictive stimulant but otherwise quite harmless.

Tobacco cigarettes contain nicotine (to get you hooked) and tar (which causes cancer and chronic lung diseases).

If u watch the movie ' who killed the electric car?' The running cost of the EV is much lower than A petrol car..and demand for fuel n oil will drop as the EV is more efficient.

Yo... Electric car not practical here. Hdb car park dun have access to electric plug. Most condos estate also dun have. Only ppl that can use electric car are landed properties dwellers.

IMHO, EV not green at all. The batteries cost a bomb to change. The process of manufacturing the batteries are toxic to Mother Earth. Range of 160km not fantastic and that range is for 50km cruise. Higher speed mean shorter range.

Hydrogen fuel cell is the way to go.

Yes, it lessens pollution and CO2 emissions, even taking into account the fuel burnt by power plants ('well-to-wheels'). Plus increasing recourse to renewable sources of energy (wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower) will reduce emissions even more.

Electric vehicles also cost less to run and maintain. Prices of electric vehicles will go down once a critical mass is reached and economies of scale achieved.

Hydrogen fuel cell is the way to go.

Problem with hydrogen fuel cell is the need for refuelling stations. Plug-in electric cars can be charged at home, more likely to find favour with drivers.

HDB carpark is a constraint, but if the govt is keen on achieving zero emissions, they could plan to provide a power point for every other parking lot in new HDB carparks, and retrofit older ones. It's a matter of political will.

It depends on the source of the electical energy that's used to charge the car's batteries. If it is from hydro, nuclear, wind and other non-fossil fuel source, yes. If not, no. If you look at major cities in industrialized countries, city smog comes mainly from industrial and automotive exhausts. With the automobile's exhaust discharge, it goes where the vehicles go. If you are old enough to remember, two-stroke motorcycle engines were the biggest culprits. It is a good thing the world has move away from them (well, not entirely - yet).

Every time I look at the smog in modern Chinese metropolises like Shanghai and Beijing, I'm reminded of LA in the early '80s – the smog city of the world. It's all due to automobile exhaust. Beijing has just exceeded 5 million vehicles – about the human population of Singapore.

California was the first state in the US to gun for zero emission policy. The Chinese are 30 years behind, but it's never too late to switch to zero-emission vehicles and renewable energy. They have even bigger numbers than the Americans, so achieving economies of scales isn't a problem. It's all about political will.

Govt mean pap rite? Pap only pay lip service to be green. Look at the area of primary forest being clear every month in the name of GDP and development. Keeping a basketball area of mangrove swamp for wildlife after turning sungei serangoon from a tidal river to a stagnated pool of water.

As a kid, wake up in the morning can see morning dew. I never see morning dew for years liao. Pap never have political will to be green, to make $$ is their only concern.

To turn nickel ore to battery too polluting. Battery can only last 5-6 years on average. Take long time to charge. Then charge improperly, batteries will damage which in turn shorten battery realiblity.

Even when govt really put plugs at carpark, still won't work as naughty kids can pull out the cable or worse steal the cable.
