The acute and incredible stupidity of Dr Ng Eng Han and Tan Chuan-Jin

The fall of Kraton, the royal city of Central Java on 20 June 1812 completed the fall of Yogyakarta to the British. Upon the fall of Kraton, British soldiers started looting. These white marauding thieves plundered the Javanese royal treasuries, gold, jewels, cash and court archive. They ripped apart everything as they continued with their killings, destruction and stealing spree. They then installed the battered and unwilling son of Sultan Hamengkubuwono, who had been taken prisoner and exiled to Penang, as their puppet Sultan. In that ceremony, Javanese courtiers were forcibly pushed to the ground by a John Crawfurd and forced to kiss the knees of his fellow white Briton who had seated himself beside the newly installed Sultan.

That Briton was in charge of and was responsible for the invasion, deaths of hundreds of Javanese and the plunder of a city. He was responsible for the imprisonment and exile of their Sultan. He was responsible for the destruction and pillage of their city. This is what the Briton wrote:

“The blow which has been struck at Djocjo Carta has afforded so decisive a proof to the Native Inhabitants of Java of the strength and determination of the British Government, that they now for the first time know their relative situation and importance. The European power is now for the first time paramount in Java.”

Who is this Briton?

This Briton is Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the barbaric murderer, destroyer and plunderer of Java.

Notwithstanding what he has done though, that Briton's family name of Raffles and his middle name of Stamford continues to adorn schools, hotels and businesses in the little island. Men like Dr Ng Eng Han, Tan Chuan-Jin and their ilk have no qualms nor issues in the use of his name. That Briton's statue stands proudly at Boat Quay with a plaque that reads:

"On this historic site, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore on 29th January 1819, and with genius and perception changed the destiny of Singapore from an obscure fishing village to a great seaport and modern metropolis."

The public and visible display of angst and anger by the likes of Dr Ng Eng Han, Tan Chuan-Jin and their ilk were undoubtedly as pretentious as they were confected. Their acute stupidity was that they fail to realise that someone would eventually would point out their brazen hypcocrisy. Will they now remove that statue of Raffles and retract the names of Raffles and Stamford from buildings, schools and businesses as a show of respect to the Indonesians?

The Indonesians, for all their faults, have displayed respect and class in not demanding that the statue of Raffles, a murderer and plunderer of Indonesians, be removed from the island or that the names of Raffles be removed from buildings, schools and businesses in the island.

It is not a story. It happened in 1812 with the French and British competing for territories and colonial possessions in this part of the world. The difference between the French and British though was that Raffles introduced violence, murder and theft into the Java equation.

Hey, bang, there is no logical comparison. What the Brits did in Java was done in the name of colonialism and imperialism. Screw the Brits if you want for what they did in Java. What the commandos did in Spore was done in the name of aggression against a peace loving tiny island. Sukarno buay song, he bombed Spore. Spore did nothing wrong except to join Malaysia. History is proof that Raffles founded Spore and early Pappies built it up. There is nothing wrong to give credit where credit is due and historical facts are undeniable.

I don't understand why does the world view Singapore as anything?why the dark can't we be nobodies just humming along minding our own business and doing our jobs?why can't we be relaxed and chill like the aussies?I don't farming see Aussies going about telling everyone their country is so great yet everyone whose been to Aussie land know its great.also Australians are the most generous country in terms of welfare to its own people and to other countries considering how much they donate to other nations.

Yeah true Singapore may be founded by a murderer and syncopant. But the difference in the Singapore equation was the mass import of hardworking Chinese coolies which lead it to a different destiny and made Singapore what it is today,a jewel of success among a pile of oderous excrement countries of south east Asia.

The British impacted everyone.

You have an issue with your neighbour over the encroaching fence. Pointless telling others that how your grandfather used to own a rubber plantation that covered the entire neighbourhood. The issue is the fence.

The commandoes broke convention, dressed in civvies and bombed civilians (not soldiers). It was sabotage and it went horribly wrong when the Indonesian people found that their Army asked its men to do something like that and were facing criminal charges in a court of law. That by itself is embarrassing. It not something that you want to incorporate into your folklore.

No issue about Ng Eng Hen being an idiot and the Govt reacting wrongly. After all the old man already honoured these guys by laying a wreath at their graves and thereby explicitly recognising them as heroes.

this saga has been poor managed by SG and media. i always suspected that he didnt apologise but it was the SG who put words in his mouth

This was an argument that should never have taken place. Old man went to Jakarta, laid wreath on their graves thereby acknowledging that they were acting for their country and heroes to their country. It should have been done and dusted. Nobody and not least the families of the dead Singapore residents that died in the bombing is going to give a flying fuck about the Indonesians naming their warships after the them.

Our young generals in cabinet was trying to invoke nationalism and get local support because they are politically getting screwed locally. It the old practice when despots and tyrants do when they start losing their foothold. The Argentinian Junta did the Falklnd shit when the economy went horribly wrong, people became agitated and to divert their attention and resentment from themselves went for the cold dirt patch in the middle of the ocean.

Mahathir was a master of this - constantly playing the bogeyman and Singapore was his favourite target and water his favourite topic.

If you accept that what the Brits did was done "in the name of colonialism and imperialism", you must then accept that what Sukarno did was in the name of anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism, i.e. the creation of Malaysia (Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak) by the Brits was carried out to contain Indonesia and to deny Indonesia what it saw as its rightful claim of Kalimanta Utara, i.e. North Kalimantan also known as British colonised Borneo.

Singapore was seen as a lackey of the Brits who was opposed to the right of Asians to self-determination. Hence, the decision to infiltrate Singapore (and Malaya) to carry out acts of sabotage.

The little Ng Eng Hans and Tan Chuan Jins in the little island cannot rely on a self-serving, illogical argument that it is okay to kill innocent, peaceful Javanese living in their own peaceful Java island in the name of British colonialism and imperialism but, in the next breath that they draw, then try to argue very illogically and hypocritically, that it not okay to kill the residents in a "peace loving tiny island" in the name of anti-colonialism.

To show that their anger is genuine and not confected, that they are sincere and not hypocritical, all the confected anger that Ng Eng Han and Tan Chuan Jin and the little Ng Eng Hans and Tan Chuan Jins can muster for theatrical display and public consumption would be best directed against Lee Kuan Yew. It was he who scattered flowers, in an act of contrition and respect, on the graves of the two marines in May 1973.
