In the past, it is common for mothers to scream at their son in public places, "Yao siew Kia". Over the years, we learnt that just by being parents alone, do not automatically place us in a position to throw insults at our kids. Parents also need to earn their respect if they want their son to obey.
During school days, we form gang. The leader was the best fighter and he would sought justice for us if we were bullied. Inevitable, at times he would also scold us and called us names. We accepted that because he had kept his promise as a leader by protecting and leading and more importantly, we respected him.
So what will happen if people with no "earned respect" start hurling insults just because he/she happened to be placed in a position of authority? The most recent case that I heard was a senior teacher being bashed up by the quietest student in the class. He is not one of the Bengs but he just couldn't take the nonsense of being scolded day in and day out by the lousy teacher who, based on feedback of the class, can't teach for nut.
History has shown that leader who has no respect from the people can still remain there for other reason. However, once that reason is gone, so will be the leader.
