SINGAPORE: A former company director was on Monday fined S$1.95 million for importing duty-unpaid liquor.

Qi Shuai, 28, pleaded guilty to six charges of importing, possessing and dealing in duty-unpaid beer and rice wine.

Qi, who was the director of wholesale trading company Tita Logistics, also pleaded guilty to one charge of unauthorised breaking of a Singapore Customs seal. Six more charges were taken into consideration in the sentencing.

This ah tiong is really garang. Sending him to jail is like sending him to a chalet. He should be caned and deported. How many such FTsh are doing it in sinkie land to evade duties? When FTsh are treated lightly when caught, it emboldens their countrymen in sinkie land to commit similar crimes. Pappies are really dumb.

If he is charged in China, this crime is classified as smuggling and carries mandatory jail...

If the fine is 1.95 million, actual amount transacted should be much higher. Tiongs got balls. Want to do, do big.

All ah tiongs really got big balls to do crime. They run vice rings and they peddle illegal drugs in SG. They see mata mata as nothing. In China, they challenge Kong Ann to fist fights. If sinkie courts send them only to jail without caning, it has no effect to tame them to obey sinkie laws.

A retired police investigator told me over lunch that the liquor smuggler's case should not have ended with him going to jail. He rationalized that the large quantity of liquor brought in suggested that they were meant for distribution to the many night spots and sleazy outlets, including posh joints. He speculated that judging from the quantity of liquor seized this ahtiong must have a big network cultivated over a long period. Hence, the Customs Department and the AG had not been thorough in their investigations. A deeper probe would have uncovered all the ahtiong's customers, who should also be charged with abetting him in the commission of a crime, among other things. A job for CPIB?
