SINGAPORE - Boosted by strong growth in manufacturing and construction, the Singapore economy grew 5.1 per cent in the first quarter from the same period last year.

This was lower than the 5.5 per cent growth in the fourth quarter of last year over the year before, according to advance estimates released by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said on Monday.

Compared with the fourth quarter last year, the economy grew just 0.1 per cent in the first quarter this year on a seasonally-adjusted annualised basis.

The manufacturing sector expanded a faster 8 per cent in the January to March quarter over a year ago, and 4.5 per cent over the preceding quarter, the MTI said.

Further proof that LHL is an excellent PM ...
further proof dat u r juz a daft sinkie ...

Singapore’s 1Q GDP expanded 5.1% y-o-y, according to advance estimates of GDP released by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI). This is worse than the 5.4% the market had expected.

On a seasonally-adjusted quarter-on-quarter annualised basis, MTI said overall GDP grew 0.1%, lower than the annualised 0.4% growth the market had been expecting.

Manufacturing grew 8.0% y-o-y, up from 7.0% in Q4, thanks to a sharp rebound in biomedical manufacturing output and stronger growth in chemicals output. Growth in the services sector moderated to 4.7% on a year-on-year basis, lower than the 5.9% growth in the previous quarter. The slow-down in growth was largely due to slower expansion in the wholesale & retail trade and finance & insurance sectors ...

GDP means nothing if the money doesn't trickle down to the masses.

If the money doesn't trickle down to the masses, it is not the fault of the government. You have to ask the masses why they don't have the skills, the tenacity and creativity to capture a big slice of the ever expanding pie.

Only an idiot will see GDP as the be all and end all of a nation's success and by implication whether or not its leaders are doing a good job.

How to when the entrance to where the pie is hidden is guarded by mercenaries and out of bounds to all others except cronies and ka ke nang? Nothing to do with skills, tenacity or creativity.

A little bird told me that if Sinkies are really interested to find out the truth, they just have to dig deeper in those companies registered in BVI, Caymans, Mauritius, Malta, Seychelles. You will be surprised to discover many companies in those tax havens are registered under Sinkies' names with US passports. Why use US passports and not Sinkie passports? Rack your brains to come up with the right answer.

If LHL is such an excellent PM, why do we hear ah peks and ah sohs in kopi tiams and market places cursing and swearing at him and the pappies? Only the sinkies living in ivory towers do not see, hear or know the happening at ground level.

These growth figures would have been no different if someone else was holding the reigns to power. Singapore's economic success reflects the success of the rest of the world in general and the region more specifically. As long as the leadership in Singapore isn't a crazed lunatic, any sane person would have these results attributed to them. Singapore's population is generally honest and hardworking, and being located ideally, services in finance, distribution, logistics would come through the city-state. In the long term, general manufacturing would go to places where labour is cheaper and markets larger, for example, Thailand, Indonesia. Singapore has sheltered harbour which gave her a good headstart, and good mercantile laws and financial operations (thank the Brits for that), but mostly, a law abiding and diligent populace, which definitely needs more recognition. Not the government.

Cheers!
