PM Hints of Coalition Politics

It was a very direct question loaded with possibilities, something no Singapore journalist would ask of his/her PM.

With the results of the 2011 election as a backdrop, Financial Times journalist Gideon Rachman asked: So can you envisage a day when the PAP is not running Singapore?

The PM threw a bombshell of sorts. “It could well happen. I don’t know how it will work but it could happen.”

The report went on to say: “A little later, he hints that the PAP is beginning to consider the possibility one day of forming a coalition government.” It then quoted the PM as saying “it may not be one team in, one team out, it may be more complicated – you are getting used to more complicated – you’re getting used to more complicated than that in Britain now.”

Scenario planning is one of the big things about the PAP government. So this political possibility is something it must have discussed with some earnestness for the PM to raise it.

So what kind of partner will the PAP go to bed with? The Workers’ Party, which these days looks more like PAP Lite, is one possibility.

Another could be a set of leaders, many of whom could be brought in in the next the couple of elections, to eventually form a party that will join forces with the PAP and run Singapore.

For that to work, you need the new crop to have a mind of their own, dump some ideologies and reimagine Singapore in ways that are unthinkable for those in today’s PAP.

Wah, Pinky you want coalition politics issit? Scrap the first-past the post' system and implement proportional representation.

Talk is cheap, action speaks louder than words. Then again, you probably don't have any balls to begin with, seeing how you've always crossed your legs tightly when talking to manlier head of states.

It might be a strategy they are considering now.
They can create various quasi-PAP opposition parties such as People Alien Party, Pay And Pay, FT Pro Party etc.
So whoever does not want to associate or vote for PAP, they could be hoodwinked to go with the above quasi-PAP parties.
Of course, those parties affiliation would well be hidden and very very hard to detect.

If the PAP loses the majority, it means that most Sporeans are fed up with them. The PAP will be a liability to any other party. Don't forget that there are many, many skeletons out there e.g. CPF, foreign worker policy, population policies,....

a coalition government with the PAP in it? i surely welcome that idea!

In view of the way the pap betrayed Singaporeans in favour of foreigners, no AP shd join the pap to form a coalition. If the pap gets 49% of the seats, all the APs shd join hands to form a coalition govt of 51% and send the pap into the Opposition.

If that's the case, the electorate wld have given the pap a tight and the APs give the pap a knock out blow.

I hope LKY wld still be alive to see the pap humiliated. That wld be perfect justice

Operation Coldstore....was a security operation ...on...1963 in which at least 111 anti-government left-wing activists were arrested and detained, including key members of the opposition political party Barisan Sosialis. Others arrested included newspaper editors, trade unionists and university students.....
At that time Singapore was...was preparing for a merger with the Federation of Malaya.....The pro-communists, led by Lim Chin Siong strongly opposed this merger and were challenging the government of Singapore headed by Lee Kuan Yew of the People's Action Party (PAP) .....

Lim's faction broke away from the PAP in 1961 to form the Barisan Sosialis. The Singapore Trade Union Congress, the dominant trade union at the time, was also split into two factions; the left-wings formed the Singapore Association of Trade Unions (SATU), while the pro-PAP faction formed the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC).The Operation dealt a heavy blow to the Barisan Sosialis, just months before the 1963 general elections......................

SATU was deregistered after its leaders were arrested, and the NTUC became the main trade union in Singapore ever since. NTUC remains closely associated with the PAP, with many of its union leaders being PAP's members of parliament

The 13 members of ex-PAP assemblymen forming the Barisan Sosialis who boycotted Parliament. SG came under control of pappies ever since. It never got the chance again to re-enter Parliament. The introduction of GRC is just the double lock on the gate to Parliament. If any of the oppo parties managed to enter Parliament in large numbers to form coalition Govt with pappies, it means the double lock is now rusty. What is next? Time will tell.

WP said before they would consider forming coalition with pap. Sinkees deserves to be screwed to support pap team B instead of choosing a braver party SDP.
