Ass Loon said S'pore more successful than expected during his reign

"I wish we had been able to foresee this outcome, and then we would have acted sooner"

I thought good governments should have some form of forecasting for their policies?

Isn't it quite obvious that if you put too many people in a small place the infrastructure would be strained?

As for the sense of belonging, I thought we had quite a strong sense of belonging in the 80s or 90s? It seemingly got eroded after he took over.

Our sense of belonging was gone ever since Ass Loon brought in more than 2 million foreigners to crowd this tiny island.

This Ass of a Loon is now talking about benefit of 20-20 hindsight. His hind must be a sight for Ho Ching to behold.

Ass Loon is a mathematician, he is too dumb to understand what an American senator had said before:

"Too much and for too long, we seemed to have surrendered personal excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our Gross National Product, now, is over $800 billion dollars a year, but that Gross National Product - if we judge the United States of America by that - that Gross National Product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them. It counts the destruction of the redwood and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl. It counts napalm and counts nuclear warheads and armoured cars for the police to fight the riots in our cities. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children. Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country, it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it can tell us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans."

That senator is an idiot. All countries include all the factors he mentions. It's not an uniquely American situation.

These necessary evils are part and parcel of life.

I see increasing population is not a main problem but taking care of old people is a must for a prosperous country.

He seems to missed all that are making people unhappy.

This CPF@55 issues is going to damage Singapore fabric structures a lot.

So many old people in the next 20 years and they were once productive workers that made Singapore it is now, bear this in mind.

I am looking forward to see Pinky 'helping more poor' in the coming years!

Yeah and you are a genius. GDP is a measurement. Whilst it is a useful tool, its imperfections and inadequacies must be recognised. To measure MiniSTARs' performance and pay them according to GDP is sheer lunacy.

That senator is Robert Kennedy and here is the speech with audio-visual:

Have you thought of becoming MP in NZ? Or go back Singapore, like Gomez, to contribute to Singapore. You are the X generation Singapore born.

The next time you meet some poor sod in Singapore can't pay his bills and feed his family, read him some beautiful poetry and tell him the Bob Kennedy said it means more than money in the pocket and food on the table.

Let me know what his reaction is.

It is not about helping the poor. It is about the inadequacies of GDP and measuring the success or otherwise of national policies by GDP alone. Obviously you have not been Unsinkified.

The Democrats are the biggest con job on earth. Why Americans allow themselves to be hoodwinked on a regular basis is beyond me. I guess the problem lies with the fact that is the dumb and inferior races have increased in numbers to the point where the democrats now have the edge in the states where it matters.

For an obvious example, you need to look no further than Obama, the man of many slogans which have changed absolutely nothing!

Gimme a break from your liberal is bad crap. GDP is a useful but inadequate measure. It does not distinguish between various types of production - the good, the bad and the ugly are all treated as equal in its calculations - and it does not measure the intangibles. Therefore whoever choses to measure how well a nation as opposed to a corporation which does not care two hoots about social responsibility has performed by looking at GDP alone is a moron regardless whether he graduated from Cambridge or Toh Tuck. Nobody is saying that all one needs to live is love and fresh air. If you are unable to comprehend the subtleties of what has been said in the speech, then you are obviously not as smart as you hold yourself out to be you TWIT!

Subtleties are fine when it comes to classical music. However, when economic performance is measured, we need cold, hard facts and figures not some touchy feely concepts.

Societies need to earn money in order to improve outcomes. Intangibles aren't going to make the MRT more reliable. Cold hard cash is needed to replace ageing infrastructure and replace obsolete components.

Intangibles are fine once the bills have been paid. They aren't a substitute for wealth. They are merely the icing on the cake once the bread and butter issues have been taken care of.

Intangibles aren't going to make the MRT more reliable.

The MRT fares paid are counted in GDP regardless of whether the MRT is reliable or not! Inadequate maintenance reduces GDP by a little, huge repair bills give GDP a big boost when they would not have been necessary had adequate day to day maintenance been done. Is it now clear to you why GDP is not an adequate measure even for the tangibles!

Intangibles are fine once the bills have been paid. They aren't a substitute for wealth. They are merely the icing on the cake once the bread and butter issues have been taken care of.

If after 50 years of development from a high base inherited by the PAP from the British - translate Sinkieland was neither fishing village nor swampland when given independence but a thriving metropolis, a jewel in the crown of the British empire, albeit the wealth was unevenly distributed, all they can use as an argument is bread and butter is more important than everything else, then it is PROOF of their failure. After HALF A CENTURY starting from a much higher base than your neighbours, bread and butter still not solved and still cannot move to higher levels of civilisation? FAILED!

Singapore has already moved on to higher levels thanks to a healthy GDP.

Provided you keep both eyes closed and believe all that you read in the Straits Times, the one and only English newspaper in Sinkieland. If one does that all the problems like inadequate healthcare, education based on rote learning, lack of transparency at all levels of government, judiciary laughing stock of the Commonwealth, CPF rules changed all the time until it seems that the money doesn't belong to you anymore, MRT not reliable at all but MRT fares counted as GDP regardless, et cetera will disappear out of sight and one will feel that he is in wonderland.

Singapore healthcare is ranked one of the best in the world http://www.bloomberg.com/visual-data/best-and-worst/most-efficient-health-care-countries

This isn't from the Shitty Times either.

Singapore students have been found to be the best in the world when it comes to problem solving. Rote learning wouldn't have achieved this. http://www.oecd.org/education/singapore-and-korea-top-first-oecd-pisa-problem-solving-test.htm

Singapore's judicial system may not be your kettle of fish but it is ranked number 2 in Asia just behind HK.

You have to learn to stop thinking that your own personal opinion can override cold hard facts.

Indeed it is not from the Shitty Times, but it is a table that is meaningless unless one understands on what basis it was prepared. Just like accepting a table that says Sinkieland is the safest or most expensive or whatever place on earth without realising is limited to expatriates and is denominated in US dollars. Healthcare probably will be number one if money is no object and you don't have to join the queue in public hospitals and take your chances there. Regardless of what any table prepared by foreigners or conducted by government minders in controlled environment says, the experience of users of the public system is the ultimate litmus test and judging by the comments here and elsewhere, Sinkieland's public healthcare system fares poorly.

Singapore students have been found to be the best in the world when it comes to problem solving. Rote learning wouldn't have achieved this. http://www.oecd.org/education/singapore-and-korea-top-first-oecd-pisa-problem-solving-test.htm

Analyse what you read my dear. Don't accept everything at face value.

It is the FIRST time that this test is being conducted and what a ridiculous name for a test - PISA and not hamburger. "85,000 students from 44 countries and economies took the computer-based test". A computer-based test! Oh my God and you believed it lock, stock and barrel?

So how many innovative products have come out of Sinkieland? Merlion is not counted arh!

Singapore's judicial system may not be your kettle of fish but it is ranked number 2 in Asia just behind HK.

Says who? Only in commercial disputes not involving the government? Did it take into account the ISA, Woffles' $1,000 fine for perverting the course of justice, et cetera. What is the perception of the man in the street? Did anybody do an independent survey? Are such surveys even allowed in Sinkieland?

You have to learn to stop thinking that your own personal opinion can override cold hard facts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_rankings_of_Singapore

You have to learn to stop using tables prepared by others, some with vested interests, some done for a purpose which is different to the argument at hand e.g. a survey for expatriates, some by ignorant foreigners who have not lived in the Little Red Dot for a single day, et cetera as "cold hard facts".
