I totally agree. I used to feel I belonged here, now not at all.

That senator is an idiot. All countries include all the factors he mentions. It's not an uniquely American situation.
These necessary evils are part and parcel of life.
I see increasing population is not a main problem but taking care of old people is a must for a prosperous country.

Yeah and you are a genius. GDP is a measurement. Whilst it is a useful tool, its imperfections and inadequacies must be recognised. To measure MiniSTARs' performance and pay them according to GDP is sheer lunacy.

It does not distinguish between various types of production - the good, the bad and the ugly are all treated as equal in its calculations - and it does not measure the intangibles. Therefore whoever choses to measure how well a nation as opposed to a corporation which does not care two hoots about social responsibility has performed by looking at GDP alone is a moron regardless whether he graduated from Cambridge or Toh Tuck. Nobody is saying that all one needs to live is love and fresh air. Subtleties are fine when it comes to classical music. However, when economic performance is measured, we need cold, hard facts and figures not some touchy feely concepts.
Societies need to earn money in order to improve outcomes. Intangibles aren't going to make the MRT more reliable. Cold hard cash is needed to replace ageing infrastructure and replace obsolete components.
Intangibles are fine once the bills have been paid. They aren't a substitute for wealth. They are merely the icing on the cake once the bread and butter issues have been taken care of.
The MRT fares paid are counted in GDP regardless of whether the MRT is reliable or not! Inadequate maintenance reduces GDP by a little, huge repair bills give GDP a big boost when they would not have been necessary had adequate day to day maintenance been done. Is it now clear to you why GDP is not an adequate measure even for the tangibles!
If after 50 years of development from a high base inherited by the PAP from the British - translate Sinkieland was neither fishing village nor swampland when given independence but a thriving metropolis, a jewel in the crown of the British empire, albeit the wealth was unevenly distributed, all they can use as an argument is bread and butter is more important than everything else, then it is PROOF of their failure. Provided you keep both eyes closed and believe all that you read in the Straits Times, the one and only English newspaper in Sinkieland. If one does that all the problems like inadequate healthcare, education based on rote learning, lack of transparency at all levels of government, judiciary laughing stock of the Commonwealth, CPF rules changed all the time until it seems that the money doesn't belong to you anymore, MRT not reliable at all but MRT fares counted as GDP regardless, et cetera will disappear out of sight and one will feel that he is in wonderland.

Just like accepting a table that says Sinkieland is the safest or most expensive or whatever place on earth without realising is limited to expatriates and is denominated in US dollars. Healthcare probably will be number one if money is no object and you don't have to join the queue in public hospitals and take your chances there. Regardless of what any table prepared by foreigners or conducted by government minders in controlled environment says, the experience of users of the public system is the ultimate litmus test and judging by the comments here and elsewhere, Sinkieland's public healthcare system fares poorly.

You have to learn to stop using tables prepared by others, some with vested interests, some done for a purpose which is different to the argument at hand e.g. a survey for expatriates, some by ignorant foreigners who have not lived in the Little Red Dot for a single day, et cetera as "cold hard facts".
