Singapore Medical Council tribunal emphasises medical profession will not condone dishonesty

SINGAPORE — Plastic surgeon Dr Woffles Wu, who was found guilty and sentenced to a S$1,000 fine in 2012 for getting an employee to take the rap for him for a speeding offence, has been suspended from medical practice for four months, the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) said in a statement today (April 7).

A SMC disciplinary tribunal said that Wu had subverted the course of justice through his act of dishonesty, and that such conduct was not condoned by the medical profession.

The tribunal noted that Wu’s seniority and standing in the profession was an aggravating factor in this case, adding that Wu was not entirely remorseful as he had admitted to the tribunal that he had not given a second thought to what he did and that he believed it was a common practice to furnish false information to the Traffic Police for such offences.

Wu’s 4-month suspension took effect from March 24, 2014 and will last till July 23, 2014.

When someone to blow the whistle on you for such matter, you will be deemed as a cheat, someone irresponsible , someone dishonest and someone who is desperate.

He should exercise more care when asking someone to take the rap for him.

This is nonsense.
The SMC should only discipline cases related to medical negligence.
He has already been fined and named in the press.
Let the patients decide whether they still want to use his services or not.

This is double jeapardy.

A crime is an act against the public good and the state punishes the criminal found guilty after due process.
Professional rules are to protect those who use that profession’s services against unscrupulous practitioners.
Following your logic, lawyers who have been convicted for criminal breach of trust and served time should not be disbarred for they have already been punished for their crime.

SINGAPORE: The superintendent of the Whitley Road Detention Centre has been sacked over security lapses that led to the escape of Jemaah Islamiyah detainee Mas Selamat Kastari. His deputy has also been demoted in rank, with a corresponding pay cut.

The two were the most senior officers in charge of the ground management of the detention centre, and were among six Internal Security Department (ISD) officers charged over the escape.

Two other Gurkha officers were also charged and have been demoted after pleading guilty.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng disclosed the moves when he updated Parliament on the disciplinary action taken after Mas Selamat’s escape.
