When looking at the picture, I pity the old man but when you read why he was imprisoned, somehow a part of that pity feeling went away.

Released from Changi prison after serving nearly three years for setting a man ablaze, he headed straight to his home on February 16 - and found himself homeless.

Mr Kuu Siau Lam's one-room rental flat in Toa Payoh was occupied by another family. The 68-year-old was furious.

The flat had been recovered and re-allocated by HDB when he was serving his sentence.

All his furniture, electrical appliances and belongings were no longer there. His passport, birth certificate and other important documents were also gone.

Around $6,000 worth of items had been left in the flat before he went to jail, he claimed.

Among the missing items: Two refrigerators, a 32-inch LCD TV, an electric bicycle, antique furniture and the power tools he used when he worked as a carpenter before his conviction.

The HDB had, in repossessing the flat, removed and disposed of the items.

In 2011, he had set his colleague on fire with thinner and a lighter after a spat in their workshop. His co-worker, Mr Kee Yau Chong, suffered burns to more than 28 per cent of his body, including his face, body and arms. Mr Kuu was sentenced to four years' jail.

Six months into his jail term, Mr Kuu, with the help of prison officers, wrote a letter to HDB, saying he wanted to keep his flat and belongings.

But HDB, in a letter, rejected his request, said Mr Kuu.

There was no further correspondence between HDB and himself after that.

Said Mr Kuu in Mandarin: "I've already served my sentence for my crime. I've done my time. So why am I being punished again?"

On the night of his release on February 16, Mr Kuu slept on a deck chair outside a public toilet in Toa Payoh, which was used by cleaning attendants in the day.

With no job and no home to return to, he told The New Paper: "I'm so old already and they took away my home and my belongings. There is no hope left."

His carpenter job paid him about $800 a month. Most of his savings are "gone already", said Mr Kuu.

He now lives on around $300 given to him monthly by the Social Services Office at Toa Payoh. He has no family or relatives, only a neighbourhood friend.

Suggest he gets rearrested and be sent back to prison. At least that's roof over his head and three meals a day, medical services, and some company to pass the day.

Cheers!

it's not alright to think that it's ok after being released from jail and expect to be treated fairly in the society.
if not, some crooks will think that it's alright to commit a crime and be sympathised and given welfare in society after released.
i have doubts about yellow ribbon but to be fair to those who really want to change for the better,
i think the relevant authority should help them by micro-managing their profiles.

If you intend to punish a crook for life, then execute them. It will save us lots of money and fulfill the thirst for revenge.

In Spore if you are not an elite, one mistake is all it takes to screw up your life.

That's why sinkees study like dogs, hoping to be a scholar. Unfortunately, the truth is only a few of these spots go to the common folks. Most of it go to the children of elites. So, elites spawn more elites. Working class is doomed in that class forever.

Yes. He can start by targeting some HDB officials responsible for confiscating his belongings to make him feel better.

Cheers!

He should stage a self-immolation in front of Istana, getting the foreign press to be present. Sinkapore needs more of such exposure. That way, he is making a great contribution to sinkapore.

So, Karl Marx believed that to eradicate elitism, communism is the solution. China today shows that communism does not only fail to eradicate elitism in the country, it creates serious division of super rich and lowly poor. Even North Korea is a failure too. In SG, it is a clear message: You die your business.

We are unique, we created the SUPER RICH ( thanks to the 60%), who tell them & us, WE DIE OUR BUSINESS....they have the right to be rich!

Unfortunately for him, he is merely looking for lodging. Self-immolation usually is an attempt to gain public attention for some political injustice, besides, "better you than me" is the way to think in Singapore's context for getting hurt.

Cheers!

The system that works is seen in the Scandinavian countries. The reality in life is that most people will never be rich ...so, why chase an elusive dream? Be realistic, let everyone have a comfortable decent middle-class lifestyle. That's something that can be accomplished with good government. The American dream is pure bs, the communist ideal is also pure bs.

He has nothing left ...so why bother to live on. His existence is worse than a rat.

Sinkees have been brain washed by the PAP that people should be punished forever for a misstep. If that's the mindset of the PAP and sinkees, then let's do it in the most efficient and low cost way.
Our law will be simple to enforce, one misstep, you die. No ifs or buts. That will be a first in the world. Sinkapore could have a new industry too ...the export of human organs.
I will shed no tears for those rich Ah Tiongs who drive like mad dogs and run down sinkees. They deserve to die. Likewise for the Ah Nehs who cheat their way to work here. I will applaud the execution of Ah Nehs who are caught for using fraudulent credentials to get a work permit.

Our population will definitely shrink by a million if we implement the death for ALL crimes policy. The Ah Nehs, Ah Tiong and Pinoys will speed away.

I can understand that, but nobody wants to die (few undergoing extremely unbearable conditions yes, but mostly not), people wish to stay alive because there is hope that tomorrow will be a better day than today, life is precious. BTW, some rats have it good. You watched Ratatouile?

Cheers!
