SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said it is investigating allegations that a Singaporean man may have been involved in the Syrian conflict.
Responding to media queries, MHA confirmed that it is looking into claims that Haja Fakkurudeen Usman Ali allegedly travelled to Syria recently with the intention to participate in armed violence there.
Haja's alleged travel to Syria was made known to the authorities by a member of the public after he left Singapore.
37-year-old Haja is a former Indian national who obtained his Singapore citizenship in 2008. He worked as a manager in a local supermarket.
Haja left Singapore in November 2013 and has not been back.
MHA said authorities have also established that a man had abetted and assisted Haja in his radicalisation and involvement in the Syrian conflict.
Gul Mohamed Maracachi Maraicar, also 37, is an Indian national and former Singapore Permanent Resident.
MHA said Gul, who worked as a system analyst with a multi-national company in Singapore, was investigated under the Internal Security Act.
Although it was assessed that he did not pose an imminent security threat to Singapore, Gul has been deported and banned from entering Singapore for his role in abetting and aiding Haja.
MHA reminds the public to alert the authorities if they suspect that a friend or family member has become radicalised, or who is planning to undertake armed violence overseas.
It said this will enable the authorities to take appropriate action to prevent the person from pursuing acts of violence that could cause harm to himself or to others and even lead to the loss of lives.
