At least eight people have died and 17 more have been seriously injured in a building collapse in South Korea, say officials.

More than 10 people are still feared trapped at the resort in the south-eastern city of Gyeongju.

Fifty-eight people received minor injuries, said an official at the state-run National Emergency Management Agency, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He confirmed the eight deaths.

Part of the auditorium of the resort collapsed during an orientation event for first-year university students from the southern city of Busan.

Fire services have blamed heavy snow on the roof. The weather is also thought to have slowed rescue efforts.

The students were attending a concert in the hall when the roof fell in
Local media reports say the collapse happened at around 21:15 local time (12:15 GMT), though there is confusion over the number of students in the hall at the time, and the number still trapped.

"So far we have four confirmed dead and 73 injured, 15 of them seriously," a spokesman for the local fire service told AFP.

Rescue workers with heavy equipment are at the scene, but heavy snow around the resort is thought to have slowed access.

About 1,000 students from Busan University of Foreign Studies were at the Mauna Ocean Resort, said an official. Many managed to get out of the damaged building by themselves, he said.

The students are thought to have been attending a concert in the auditorium when the roof fell in.

"The ceiling came crashing down at the front near the stage," one student told South Korea's YTN news channel. "Then pandemonium broke out and everyone started rushing towards the exits, shouting and screaming," he added.

Gyeongju is a historic city that served as the capital of one of the Korean peninsula's ancient kingdoms, and is a popular tourist destination.

The area has experienced exceptionally heavy snowfall over the past week.

Building collapses in Gyeongju, trapping as many as 50 students

SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- A resort building in the southern city of Gyeongju collapsed late Monday, trapping as many as 50 university students in the debris, according to police officials, with rescue work underway.

More than 500 college students were reportedly having a welcoming party for freshmen in the resort building when it collapsed at around 9:16 p.m., according to the police officials in Gyeongju.

About 50 of the students remained buried in the debris, rescue officials said, adding that "dozens of rescuers rushed to the scene and rescue operations are currently under way." Another five were injured and sent to a nearby hospital.

The officials speculated that heavy snow atop the roof could have caused the collapse, following recent massive snowfalls across the country, but that they are studying to find the exact cause.

They were students from a college located in the southern port city of Busan.

The roof of an auditorium at the Mauna Ocean Resort in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, collapsed Monday trapping about 50 university students as of 11 p.m. according to reports.

Exact casualties are not yet known, but witnesses said at least three people were killed.

Gyeongju City said about 1,100 students from Busan University of Foreign Studies were going through freshmen orientation in the auditorium.

An official said the roof collapsed around 9:16 p.m., apparently caused by the recent heavy snow. The exact cause is under investigation.

The local fire department said the resort, owned and operated by Kolon, was located on a hillside and it would take more time than usual to approach the auditorium due to deep snowdrifts.

Most of the students escaped from the collapsed auditorium, and at least 14 of them were taken to a nearby hospital. One of them told YTN news agency that there may have been more fatalities.

Witnesses said dozens of students received first aid at the scene.

The resort was built in 2006, and the auditorium was a sandwich-panel prefab construction, which is vulnerable to excessive weight.

The region has suffered from heavy snowfall for the past few days.

..A building collapsed because of the weight of the snow...

What about Bedok Mall...? I went there just before the New Year and saw those flimsy structure support the roof along the outside walkway.

This begets the question...Is it safe for shoppers to go into an uncomplete building..??

What if the towering crane collapsed and with the weight of their load come crashing down..???
It will be like a crashing vertical dominoes. ( u remember the images of the 911 Twin tower collapse)

I think making some early bucks from retail rental and compromising shoppers"s safety is getting their sums totally wrong.

We can easily have a fatality in the hundreds if this happen.

I urge my children to stay away...until the whole building is complete.

damn good idea to do this.... but shouldnt a building get a certain type of certificate from the BCA before people can be allowed in ?

.. Yes...In the name of higher profits, higher growth figures and higher GDP, of course a certificate will be issued...

This Korean building also has a certificate, Hotel New world also has a certificate but accidents do happen.

On record, for the past 5 years, at least 3 cranes has toppled..

Go on, keep putting your blind faith in the institutions and organizations of this regime: BCA, ICA, NEA, LTA, HSA, AVA, (registered with) MOE, CASE.

Building standards weight-bearing load of roofs are much lower in south China than in the north, one of the reasons why you hear of more buildings collapsing under the weight of snow in the south whenever ther are unusually heavy snowfalls.

Nine people killed in wedding day tragedy when heavy snow causes roof to collapse, burying 103 people as Chinese bride began her speech

  • Auditorium roof collapsed under the weight of heavy snow during a wedding
  • Nine people died and another 103 were trapped under the snow and rubble
  • Rescuers in Yazhuang, Panang County worked through night to save lives
  • Tragedy happened just as bride started a speech to her friends and family

At least nine people have been killed and more than 100 injured after an old auditorium collapsed just as a bride started giving a speech on her wedding day in China.

Shi Tsao, 27, could only watch in horror as she climbed onto a stage in Yazhuang, Panang County to address guests seconds before the roof collapsed - burying 103 of her friends and family.
Yesterday's tragedy is believed to have happened after freezing temperatures left a thick layer on snow on the building's roof, which eventually gave way under the pressure.

Collapse: The tragedy happened early yesterday afternoon just as the hall had opened to accept the guests in east China's Zhejiang Province. 103 people were left buried beneath the rubble

Rescue workers dug throughout yesterday evening to remove the snow and rubble and pull free all those buried beneath.

The tragedy happened early yesterday afternoon just as the hall had opened to accept the guests in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The auditorium was packed with wedding decorations at the time, many of which were left crushed under the rubble.

Of the 103 people injured, 12 were said to be in a critical condition according to coordinators of the rescue operation in Panan County.

The bride's new husband Yul Ch'eng had been watching on the stage with the other guests when the roof collapsed and was taken to hospital with non-serious injuries.

The couple and dozens of other family members were treated for shock after the tragedy, which will continue to be investigated over the weekend.

The news comes as snowstorms wreak havoc across China, causing chaos on the country's railways and network of motorways.

Last week tens of millions of people faced serious disruption as they made their way from rural areas back into cities after the week long Spring Festival.

Blizzards that swept across China closed many major motorways as snow and ice made driving conditions hazardous, while trains were slowed down to ensure transport safety.
